🚨 Let the games begin — China launches exercise Joint Sword 2024A, surrounding Taiwan from all directions
Thread with everything you need to know + tracking live updates:
The Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) launched joint military exercise "JOINT SWORD 2024A" — surrounding Taiwan on 23 May.
This news follows the largest ADIZ violation of the year last week:
The PLA drills are being conducted in the Taiwan Strait & to the north, south, & east of Taiwan Island, & around the frontline islands of Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqiu, & Dongyin.
Chinese media reports the exercise will be held from 23-24 May & focuses on “joint sea-air combat-readiness patrols, joint seizure of comprehensive battlefield control, & joint precision strikes on key targets.”
Joint Sword 2024A involves the “patrol of ships & planes closing in on areas around the island & integrated operations inside & outside the [first] island chain to test joint real combat capabilities.”
- Big news but doesn’t mean an invasion or blockade is likely or imminent
- Scheduled for 2 days but “A” implies a “B” may follow
- Big drills like this are not uncommon & have happened before around major political events
- Analysts anticipated a response like this to Taiwan’s presidential inauguration, & the weather is better this time of year
- Too early to understand the size & scope compared to previous operations
- Lots of bad info so be careful who & what you trust
I’ll be writing about stuff like this here (launching end of the month):
New from Chinese media:
- Designed to surround Taiwan from both the east & the west, the exercises display the PLA's strike capability across all directions without any blind spots, forming a situation where the island is pinned down from both sides
- To the east, joint forces organized to carry out sea & land assault drills
-First time that Chinese Coast Guard vessels have entered the waters around Wuqiu & Dongyin
- Designed to serve as strong deterrence & warning, destroying the notion of so-called restricted waters imposed by Taiwan
- Feature an integrated plan covering the main & outlying islands, & employing the acts of destroying, trapping & blocking in one move
- Combat alert patrols surround the island, with warships & warplanes closing in on multiple locations only steps away from its coastlines, effectively pressuring the island's space for military defense
First look — video opens with a shot of PLAN Jiangkai ll-class frigate CNS Nantong (533)
“Today, the air force in the Eastern Theater Command dispatched dozens of fighters to systematically patrol around the island & cruise around the outer islands. After arriving in the mission airspace, all types of fighters rely on joint intelligence support & flexibly take various tactical actions to reach the patrol around Taiwan Island.”
New: Taiwan reported 49 Chinese PLA aircraft operating around Taiwan, with 35 entering its air defense zone — the largest violation of 2024. Revised map to reflect flight paths.
A few notes on China’s 3 aircraft carriers, which I included in the first version:
- China’s newest & most advanced carrier, CNS Fujian (18), just got underway for its 2nd round of sea trials. Since it hasn’t been commissioned yet, I removed to avoid confusion
- CNS Liaoning (16) is operating in the Bohai Sea as of 21 May & recently completed sea trials. I consider it active & available
- CNS Shandong (17) was in port as of 16 May but hasn’t been spotted since, & could participate in the exercises
High-level the goal was to show that for the first time ever, 3 Chinese carriers were operating or available. But it’s Liaoning or Shandong that would likely be involved in the drills.

Everything you need to know:
Yesterday, China launched exercise Joint Sword 2024A, encircling Taiwan in what it called a "strong punishment" following the inauguration of President Lai Ching-te.
First look at the Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group 👀
USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) & 5 guided-missile destroyers are underway conducting exercises off the west coast.
The CSG is preparing for a Pacific deployment & this is the first time the composition has been revealed:
Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. (DDG 121), USS Preble (DDG 88), & USS Michael Murphy (DDG 112) sail in formation in the Pacific Ocean.

With less than a week to go until Taiwan’s presidential inauguration, there’s a lot going on in the region. Tracking latest developments & military activity here:
Is Beijing building another artificial military base?
The Philippines fears China has begun to create a more permanent outpost at Sabina Shoal & claims to have evidence they may already be laying the literal groundwork: @GordianKnotRay
“Two months ago SeaLight documented the seasonal return of the People's Republic of China's (PRC) Spratly Backbone Fishing Vessels to Sabina Shoal…
The constant presence of rafted vessels is normally sufficient cause for concern, as China uses rafting as a form of floating outposts to normalize its presence and establish its sovereignty claims.
What the Philippines fears, however, is that China has already begun to enact plans to create a more permanent outpost at Sabina.
In fact, Manila claims to have found evidence that China may already be laying the literal groundwork by dumping mounds of dead coral on top of the underwater reefs.”
“The Philippines is especially concerned about Sabina Shoal, since it lies just 75 nautical miles from the coast of Palawan. Was China to succeed in building a military base there, it would be the nearest base to Philippine shores, as SeaLight's graphics partner Ian Ellis-Jones recently laid out in his helpful map of contested South China Sea features.”
China accomplished what it set out to do in February — normalize military activity around & within Kinmen’s waters, operating with near impunity & establishing a permanent presence at Taiwan’s strategic frontline island.
Gradually, then suddenly — the Kinmen Crisis 🧵
With one week to go until Taiwan’s presidential inauguration, major military activity is underway in the Indo-Pacific.
Taiwan is on alert for China to carry out military exercises, & analysts say Beijing is ratcheting up pressure on the new administration.
Big news last week — A record number of Chinese ships were operating within Taiwan's restricted & prohibited waters around the island of Kinmen, coming as close as 4 nautical miles to Taiwan’s sovereign territory.
🚨 Will China move on Taiwan in 2025, 2027, or 2035?
Former Commander of Naval Intelligence, RADM Mike Studeman, answers on @IndoPacPodcast:
⑴ "It's very clear that Xi Jinping wants to have Taiwan options earlier than the mid-2030s. He has been preparing his people, his military, his officials, his population, for recovering Taiwan."
⑵ "Xi was very open. He accelerated some modernization goals from 2035 to 2027. It also happens to be the centenary of the PLA, as a hundred years since they were established. The PLA has been doing everything in every warfare area."
⑶ "He's done a number of things to prepare for putting his country into a wartime environment. The military, the governmental, the leadership, the economic... all of these indicators of preparation indicate a very serious country that is sprinting towards trying to do something that their leader is telling them that they must do."
⑷ "History is rhyming a lot & we would be wise to take Xi at his word."
