I have just defended young people on @LBC against the militarist Tobias Ellwood who was out on behalf of the Cons for compulsory national service.
Clip soon but my main points were:
🧵
Young people have been failed terribly by this Government. Generational inequality has never been as bad as it is now. The current generation are the first to be less well off than their parents.
Young people have schools with crumbling concrete and a teacher crisis.
They have sky high tuition fees.
Rents are eyewatering and home ownership beyond the reach of most.
And Brexit has robbed young brits of their ability to study, work and live across 27 other countries visa free.
Any serious government would be tackling these issues if they genuinely cared about young Brits.
But this policy is a clear sign of desperation, designed to distract everyone from Sunak’s disastrous election campaign and smacks of pure prejudice against young people.
If you give them a stake in society they would want to defend it.
If you want to instil good values in young people then lead by example - but your party has overseen one of the most corrupt, sleaze ridden governments in living memory.
If you want to instil good values in young people don’t have two prime ministers who broke covid rules. Don’t have a Prime Minister like Liz truss who blamed everyone but herself for her mistakes.
If you want honest hardworking young people, don’t be in a party that sold Brexit to a nation on a pack of lies.
Want young people to behave better? Then they should start with themselves. Uphold the Nolan principles and adhere to the law.
What are they getting in return? Do those who participate get free university tuition fees? Do they get subsidised rent on a quality home in a good area? What’s the deal?
Because at the moment it looks like punishing young people to pursue the votes of some older voters almost ALL of whom will never have had to have done national service.
I asked him if he plans to get £1.5 billion of the £2.5 billion a year cost of the programme by gutting the post-Brexit shared prosperity fund, which was meant to replace the loss of EU structural funding. That instead of levelling up young people, he'll be punishing them further
I pointed out the scandalous spending by his party in Government much of which could've helped fund our armed forces properly bestforbritain.org/scandalous_spe…
And finally, I challenged him on his point that the UK's needs a larger pool of trained killers given that the size of the armed services under the Tories has fallen from 177,000 in 2010 to 130,000 in 2024.
I firmly believe this desparate policy move will end any remaining complacency among young people to get out and vote on 4 July.
We'll be publishing recommendations on how to vote tactically at to help them.getvoting.org
🙏Thank you all so much for the supportive feedback. If you can help our campaign, please do. Every penny will be put to good use to keep these people out for a generation bestforbritain.org/election_crowd…

💥 WE HAVE BEEN TARGETED 💥
Among all the Brexiter psychodrama in parliament today, you may have missed this article. Dozens of people have contacted me about it, so here's a thread on what I know...
🧵
It was first revealed that former MI6 Chief Richard Dearlove and his Brexiter chums, had been plotting to infiltrate Best for Britain to steal our strategic plans, by the let's say 'weird' publication The Grayzone, over two years ago...
They published a very long article, with screengrabs of Dearlove et al's hacked emails. I won't link to it. We were alerted to the article shortly after it was published and not by Grayzone. Until then, we didn't know anything the plot against us.
On Sunday morning at around 5.30am, I was awoken by a commotion outside. A woman (let's call her Sharon) had collapsed on the paving and was gasping for air. Some other neighbours were already trying to assist her.
It took 13 minutes on a call with 999 to find out that an ambulance would be 'at least an hour' and that no other emergency service could come either.
Sharon's breathing was deteriorating, she was losing consciousness.
I got my car keys.
Three people carried her in to my car. A woman had Sharon's head in her lap, a man had her feet in his. Another man sat next to me in the front.
I drove, very fast, towards St Thomas' A&E.
Over Lambeth Bridge, Sharon appeared to stop breathing.
📣When he resigned as Con leader but wanted to stay on as caretaker PM, Johnson said, "I want you to know that from now until my successor is in place, your interests will be served and the government of the country will be carried on."
Either that was true, in which case he has yet again shown incompetence in office by failing to act in the interests of the country, refusing to put in place emergency measures to help the British people cope with the worst cost of living crisis of our lives or
he was lying and just wanted a few more months of salary, junkets and paid holidays, with zero intention of actually doing the job he's paid to do.
Britain deserves far, far better than this lazy, entitled, self-serving, monster, and his sycophantic hangers on.
Excellent to see LibDems & Lab have stood aside for Greens as part of the rainbow alliance administration in a by-election tomorrow in the Waverley by-election in South West Surrey waverley.gov.uk/Services/Counc…
And on 25th May another one.
An important by-election in Spelthorne borough and constituency, Surrey where again Lab & LibDems have stood aside for Greens - who runs the council is dependent on this spelthorne.gov.uk/election2022
And there will of course be two Westminster by-elections (at least) coming up. One in Wakefield where Lab should be supported and one in Tiverton & Honiton where LDs best placed to defeat Gvt.
A reminder, this is (mostly) a deeply authoritarian Bill representing a huge power grab by the Cons. And I mean huge. Unamended, it gives Ministers unprecedented powers and basically ends free and fair elections in the U.K. It’s not hyperbole to say that.
Just listen back to Conservative and cross bench peer speeches in the HoL debate yesterday. No other decent democracy has Gvt interference in elections and over the regulator. I can’t stress enough how bad this Bill is.
