1/ Major General Ivan Popov, recently arrested by Russia's FSB on charges of fraud, reportedly believes he was set up by his former superior General Valery Gerasimov after selling scrap metal to raise funds for his troops.
2/ According to a source cited by the VChK-OGPU Telegram channel:
"After Shoigu was removed from the post of defense minister, Popov refused the option offered to him earlier to resign for health reasons.
3/ "Popov argued that he believed that Gerasimov, the chief of the General Staff, who was the main organizer of the harassment against Popov, would be the next to resign.
4/ "In addition, Popov has attempted to approach the FSB's Military Counterintelligence Department (DVKR) in order to incriminate Gerasimov. Popov made it clear that he planned to bring a dozen more officers who were also ready to testify.
5/ "On the eve of his arrest on May 17, Popov said that he refused to cooperate with the FSB on this issue and informed those who agreed to testify against Gerasimov that there was no need to do so any more. Popov did not give any reasoning for this decision to his entourage.
6/ "Those who were in contact with him noted his depressed state at that moment.
It is also noteworthy that the evidentiary materials regarding the illegal sale of metal structures by Popov were provided by the DVKR FSB.
7/ "The case of Popov was directly handled by Anton Durmanenko, an officer of the DVKR FSB.
It should be noted that the sale of scrap metal is a widespread activity among commanders of units that are in the war zone.
8/ "At the same time, the servicemen of the 58th Army claim that Popov transferred all the money from the sale of scrap metal to the needs of his units, because of the conflict with Gerasimov." /end
1/ A Russian soldier who says he was raped by African mercenaries in Ukraine asks for advice:
"Hello. I ask anonymously.
I am a soldier of a motorised rifle brigade, which is currently performing combat missions in the Kharkov region.
2/ "I thought for a long time whether to write about it at all, but finally decided to do it. In general, I don't know how to say it properly. I was raped. It happened a week ago. We were already in the [Special Military Operation] area. They sent Africans with us.
3/ "We realized right away that we couldn't trust these cocksuckers. They don't speak Russian, they always stay aloof, and it's not clear what they have in mind. One day it so happened that I was resting after my shift, and other guys from my unit went on a mission.
1/ Pressures from the war in Ukraine are reportedly contributing to a massive staff shortage in Russia's internal security forces. The Interior Ministry is said to be short of 152,000 staff. As a result, it is reportedly "paralysed" and unable to do its job of fighting crime. ⬇️
2/ The VChK-OGPU Telegram channel reports that Interior Ministry head Vladimir Kolokoltsev recently told Russia's Federation Council (the Russian legislature's upper house) that his ministry was short of 152,000 personnel. This figure had increased by 150% in the last 6 months.
3/ This follows reports last year about tens of thousands of vacancies in the Ministry of the Interior (MVD), with many policemen and other security personnel quitting to find better prospects elsewhere. The situation appears to have got worse since then.
1/ Two more incidents have been reported of Russians being fined or denounced for association with the colours of blue and yellow – Ukraine's national colours. They include a journalist who was denounced for being photographed in a yellow jacket against a blue sky. ⬇️
2/ The journalist, Vologda region reporter Antonida Smolina, was photographed wearing a yellow down jacket with a cloudy blue sky in the background. After the picture was published on her social media (probably VK) page, she was denounced by a certain Valery Nikolaevich P.
3/ According to Smolina, the complaint stated that she was "photographed in a yellow down jacket against the blue sky, thereby causing associations with enemy symbols, discrediting our government and army." A policeman came to her house to interview her.
1/ @konrad_muzyka has published an excellent if rather gloomy thread on the current situation in Ukraine. In the interests of helping it to reach a wider audience, I thought an English translation would be useful.
2/ "I invite you to a short thread about the current situation on the frontline. In short, the situation looks very bad and is not expected to improve in the coming weeks.
3/ There are three reasons for the current state of affairs and in principle there is nothing revelatory here, as the problems on the Ukrainian side have been known for a long time: lack of ammunition, manpower, fortifications.
1/ A memorial to the lost sailors of the Russian missile cruiser Moskva has been unveiled in Sevastopol, two years after the ship's sinking on 13 April 2022. However, many relatives and some of the surviving crew, including the captain, were not invited to the ceremony. ⬇️
2/ The memorial is dedicated to the sailors of the 30th Surface Ship Division. It was erected opposite the place in Sevastopol harbour where Moskva used to dock, and was unveiled on Saturday 13 April 2024. Most of those named on it were Moskva crew members.
3/ Photos of the memorial have recently been published. It comprises a slab two meters high and about five meters long, three stones with the names of 20 of the dead crew members and one other sailor at the foot of the slab, and a stone with an engraved image of the ship.
1/ Units from Russia's 'Afrika Korps' are reportedly to be withdrawn from Africa and sent to Russia's Belgorod region on the border with Ukraine. Its organiser, GRU Lieutenant General Andrei Averyanov, is said to be under a cloud for failing to achieve his goals in Africa. ⬇️
2/ The VChK-OGPU Telegram channel reports that preparations are being made to withdraw Afrika Corps detachments and dispatch them to Belgorod, the scene of recent incursions by the Ukraine-supported Russian Volunteer Corps.
3/ The Afrika Korps was created following Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin's death in 2023, as a means of taking over Wagner's operations in Africa and bringing them under the control of the Russian Ministry of Defence.
