Razom for Ukraine is proud to join Americans around the country to commemorate #Juneteenth. This Juneteenth, we remember the friendship between Ira Aldridge, an African American free man and Ukraine’s poet laureate Taras Shevchenko, born a serf. 🧵 Image
Aldridge was born in NYC and dreamed of becoming a Shakespearean actor. He moved to the UK, where his casting in Othello was met with racist derision. But he was not the type to quit. He embarked on a tour of Europe and his performances started drawing crowds and awards. Image
In St. Petersburg, Aldridge was introduced to Taras Shevchenko, poet, writer, artist, and folklorist who would go on to be renowned as a father-figure of modern Ukrainian literature. The men bonded instantly over their shared legacy of suffering and discrimination. Image
Shevchenko was born a serf, owned by the Engelhardt family, and was brought by them to St. Petersburg in the 1830s. He showed great promise as an artist and, eventually, his friends raised enough money to buy his freedom. A Shevchenko painting of the Vydubychi Monastery in Kyiv: Image
Meanwhile, Aldridge was becoming recognized as a premier stage actor of his era. In preparation for his appearances, European audiences would learn English phrases to better follow his performance. Aldridge in Titus Andronicus: Image
The two men met in November of 1858, during a performance of Othello in St. Petersburg. They remained close friends for the rest of their lives. While Shevchenko painted this portrait of Aldridge, Shevchenko sang Ukrainian folk songs and Aldridge sang Black spirituals. Image
As artists, Shevchenko and Aldridge only flourished in exile. Both died before returning home or seeing their people live freely. Shevchenko spent 10 years in prison for his activism, and Aldridge died in Łódź in 1867 en route to perform for liberated slaves in the American South Image
The two men’s friendship continues to inspire great art today. Virlana Tkacz’s play about their relationship, Dark Night Bright Stars, toured Odesa, Lviv, and Kyiv in 2014.

Ira Aldridge and Taras Shevchenko’s friendship reminds us that freedom can never be taken for granted, but that a lot of work remains to keep our peoples free.

Razom for Ukraine wishes all a Happy #Juneteenth.

Razom for Ukraine is proud to endorse the Stand With Ukraine Act. If passed by Congress, this significant bipartisan legislation would create a meaningful 10-year security partnership & deliver for the majority of Americans who want to help Ukraine win.

Read on to learn more 🧵Image
The Stand With Ukraine Act would codify the U.S.-Ukraine Bilateral Security Agreement—a historic 10-year roadmap for security cooperation signed by @POTUS & @ZelenskyyUa in June—into law, giving Congress a key role to ensure Ukraine wins and strong oversight of aid continues.
This legislation is also bipartisan, reflecting the overwhelming majority of Americans who want to help Ukraine win.

The Senate version is led by @SenBlumenthal & @LindseyGrahamSC, while the House version is led by @RepBrianFitz and the @UkraineCaucus.

NEW 🚀 Today, @rustem_umerov meets with @SecDef to ask the U.S. to finally permit Ukraine to defend itself by striking Russian military sites.

@razomforukraine is launching so that Americans can urge @POTUS to #LetUkraineStrikeBack and defend itself.LetUkraineStrikeBack.com
Ukrainians are grateful to the U.S. for providing weapons in recent months, especially long-range missiles known as ATACMS. But the Biden Administration has arbitrarily restricted Ukraine from using these tools to batter Putin's war machine inside Russian territory.
According to @TheStudyofWar, there are 225+ key military targets in range of ATACMS that are safe only because of @WhiteHouse policy.

When this policy changes, it can produce an immediate impact and force Russia to pull defenses back from the front.

Today, the Ukrainian parliament took a decisive step to restrict domestic threats against peace, democracy, and tolerance. Under a new law, religious groups that—through due process—are proven to collaborate with Russian authorities must cease operations in the country. Image
Ukraine is among the most pluralist societies in Europe. In addition to a strong church-going Orthodox Christian population, thousands of Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, and Jewish congregations operate openly in Ukraine. The same cannot be said of Russia. Image
There are essentially no independent religious groups remaining in Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine. Russian forces have beaten, arrested, tortured, and even murdered Ukrainian clerics, as documented by our friends @UkraineFreedom7

We'd be delighted to hear what @RichardHaass thinks is "core Ukraine."

Perhaps he means the borders of Ukraine in 1919?

Here's a few other bogus talking points that don't hold up to scrutiny 🧵
Image
Haas says Ukraine will never liberate its territory from Russian occupation: "Not gonna happen!"

In reality, Ukraine has liberated over 50% of the territory captured by Russia. Just yesterday, Ukraine forced Russia's last patrol ship to abandon Crimea. kyivindependent.com/last-russian-p…
If Ukraine surrenders territory and people to Russia, "I think then Putin will essentially be potentially willing to compromise," says Haas.

World leaders roundly mock this as naive. Even @MedvedevRussiaE pledged to use a ceasefire to conquer the "remaining Ukrainian lands." Image

The REPO Act would use frozen Russian state assets to help Ukraine. It's only right to #MakePutinPay. But some members of Congress, such as Sen. @JDVance1, are instead trying to convince their colleagues protect Putin's billions.

Here are the facts on REPO 🧵
Claim: This would set a dangerous precedent.

Reality: This would set a precedent that countries grievously violating international law, waging genocidal wars, and trying to conquer their neighbors, will face meaningful consequences. This deters future aggression.
Claim: There is no precedent for transferring frozen state assets.

Reality: False. When Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, the US and allies used "countermeasures" to suspend Iraq's sovereign immunity and transfer frozen Iraqi state funds to an international compensation mechanism.

Ukrainian Congress Committee of America @UkrCongComAm, Joint Baltic American National Committee @JBANCchatter, & Razom @razomforukraine issued the following statement in response to the proposal by the Biden Admin to introduce legislation designating Russia an "Aggressor State":
The Biden Administration’s newly proposed “Aggressor State” designation for Russia is a damaging concept that undermines current congressional efforts to support Ukraine.
Russia is engaged currently in a full-scale, ruthless war and genocide against Ukraine and its people. This new proposed designation would do nothing to change Russian actions, to seize Russian state assets, or to meaningfully hold Russia’s government accountable...
