1/ SHAADI BLOG 2 all about clothes. Us Asians are seriously serious abt clothes for the wedding! More sparkle the better โจ So will set out ๐๐ฝ the kinds of gear traditionally worn in British Asian Muslim weddings.Expect lots of colour, variety of materials & exquisite embroidery.
2/Let's do the male attire 1st. 1st & most smart imo is the SHERWANI, a very formal suit.Lots of different types & embroidery designs. Some say the name comes from the Azerbaijan area & also designed similar to what the Mughals (1500s-1800s) wore in pre-partion India.
3/KURTA PYJAMA or SHALWAR. The kurta is worn on top with the shalwar, a wider designed trouser or a pjyama is narrow fitting. Can be worn casually or more fancy for special occasions too. Shalwar's are more common for men in ๐ต๐ฐ or in Indian punjab, while pyjamas more so in ๐ฎ๐ณ pics
4/the KULA is worn by the groom & sometimes by close family males on the wedding day, also come in many different forms. Not compulsory to wear tho. Symbolises honour & respect, but I've not been able to find exact origins. Common across the muslim world, hindu and sikh traditions.
5/ Of course we're Brits so men wear western suits too, quite often the groom will wear a suit on the 2nd reception day, the Walima (see previous thread).
6/Now for the ladies! Some serious colour & bling.Reds, yellows, golds & greens are traditional at our weddings but not mandatory. Many will wear a LEHNGA. A very full skirt often with layers of fabric with either a shorter crop top or a longer shirt. The shawl is called a DUPATTA.
7/ LEHNGA's have been worn since the 10th Century in northern India and are now commonly worn across the sub continent on special occasions, the name comes from Hindi. Many many many varieties exist, that can cost into the ยฃ1000s for bridal ones.
8/Our brides have traditionally worn shades of red on the wedding day but especially in Pakistan the trend has changed to different colours in recent times. Again as Brits, many brides are also wearing white at some point in the wedding festivities.
9/Next there's a GHARARA (Urdu). So elegant & again requires many many yards of material.Difference from a Lehnga,is this has two legs but looks like a flowing skirt.Again originating in Northern ๐ฎ๐ณ, they were worn by the rather wealthy ladies in society.Think Bridgerton society!
10/Of course SARIs (Hindi) are the most gorgeous elegant clothing ever designed, IMHO ๐Usually a continuous 5-6 yards of cloth, can be plain or printed or embroidered. Also many specific types of sari exist depending on the region they come from.
11/ Here's me wearing one at the first @sameegroup awards whwre ai received a special commendation ๐. 6 yards of beautiful chiffon.
@sameegroup 12/ BANARSI saris are probably some of the best known, named after the region of Banaras in India, usually made of pure silk with real gold or silver threaded embroidery. Just stunning.
@sameegroup 13/The late gorgeous Sridevi was an absolute style goddess for me growing up & noone wore a sari better than her. One of Bollywood's best actors, gone way too soon. RIP Sridevi ๐
@sameegroup 14/Here's also a wee clip of how to tie a sari in the standard style.
@sameegroup 15/ There are also different ways to tie a sari, often also depending on the region in India. This style is traditional in the Gujarat region.
@sameegroup 16/SHALWAR KAMEEZ, is the more casual type of dress, worn quite commonly day to day or on special occasions. Kameez meaning shirt similar to chamise in French & camisia in Latin. Usually comes as a 3 piece suit.
@sameegroup 17/ Nowadays long dresses have become fashionable with all the traditional embroidery but they don't have a name as such but also look super elegant.
Here's a couple of mine.
18/That's the end of this thread. Any questions please ask. If you're inspired by the clothes on this blog check out this boutique I buy a lot of my clothes from including some I'll be wearing through the wedding days, based in ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ memsaabonline.com/collections/saโฆ

1/It's the FINAL instalment of my MEGA BRITISH ASIAN MUSLIM WEDDING BLOG ๐งต ๐ ๐
No 10 focuses on traditional ๐ฎ๐ณ ๐ต๐ฐ jewellery worn on special occasions. I thoroughly enjoyed wearing some pieces that I rarely wear through the wedding. The more sparkle the better โจ ๐๐
2/Other than necklaces & matching earrings, there are key pieces of jewellery that are specific ๐ฎ๐ณ ๐ต๐ฐ . First of all is the TIKKA.Worn in the middle of the forehead with a decorative chain that attaches in the hair at the back. There's no set design & varieties of every kind exist.
3/TIKKAS have been worn in the region for 1000s of years, some say to signify wisdom of the 'third eye' in Hindu traditions. I found a great way to fix your tikka securely & easily which I had to show my hairdresser! She was delighted to learn a new skill! youtube.com/shorts/kbiA1RDโฆ
1/The wedding may be over but there are two important elements i need to still write a bit about. Henna and jewellery ๐ So here's blog 9 with some info about the origins and variety of henna around the Muslim world.
MEGA BRITISH ASIAN MUSLIM WEDDING BLOG ๐งต ๐ ๐
2/2/Henna(Arabic) in ๐ฎ๐ณ๐ต๐ฐ culture is called MEHNDI which is Hindi. From the henna plant the leaves are turned into a powder then mixing with water, creates the paste which has a very particular and strong fragrance. Here's a quick video of how it's made.
3/Henna comes as a powder or in cones but some cones nowadays have chemicals added to make the colour stronger. This usually doesn't last as long (that maybe what u want) but beware as sometimes they can cause a skin reaction, so best to stick to the organic pure kind.
1/Blog 8 has landed of my MEGA BRITISH ASIAN MUSLIM WEDDING BLOG ๐งต ๐ ๐ It was the 6th and final event and was WALIMA day which is the post wedding reception thrown by the groom's family and what a spectacular event it was! Tune in below to learn more.
2/The event was held at the beautiful Cameron House on a thankfully dry day. On the stunning banks of Loch Lomond, the set up was absolutely gorgeous. The whites and pinks set off a beautiful summer reception. Not traditional asian colours but a beautiful fusion of east & west.
3/At the WALIMA the bride's family & friends are the special guests & so our side gathered at the entrance to welcome them with rose petal confetti and flower garlands & bracelets for the bride's immediate family. (Ref to blog 7 abt flower garlands) ๐ธ
1/It's time for no 7 of my MEGA BRITISH ASIAN MUSLIM WEDDING BLOG ๐งต ๐ ๐.After 5 large events it was finally time for the wedding reception, called the RUKHSATI (ref blog 1). A beautiful evening that brought the bride and groom together ๐ฅฐ Check out all the wonderful details ๐๐ฝ
2/The BARAAT, name given to the groom's side 1st gather at the groom's home. A SEHRA BANDI involves different traditions helping to get the groom ready. Sometimes poetry is recited for the groom too. In some traditions the groom's face is covered until he gets to see the bride.
3/SEHRA BANDI means to tie the SEHRA, a Sanskrit word for garland for the head. The tradition of writing poetry for the groom comes from Urdu traditions by prominent poets of the Mughal era such as Mirza Ghalib & Bahadur Shah Zafar (18th C). allpoetry.com/Bahadur-Shah-Zโฆ
1/ SHAADI UPDATE 6 - the MEHNDI celebrations, the bride's pre-wedding bash was a beautiful colourful and lively event. Check out the next instalment of my MEGA BRITISH ASIAN MUSLIM WEDDING BLOG ๐งต ๐ ๐
2/Refer to blog 1 for more info abt terminology & main events. The Mehndi traditionally was when the bride would have her henna done for the wedding. In ๐ฎ๐ณ ๐ต๐ฐ culture it's evolved into a celebration when often the groom's family are also invited, usually a ladies only event.
3/The groom's family will take sweets, jewellery like colourful bangles, flowers and henna all decorated in colourful trays to the event & will be welcomed by the bride's family sometimes with confetti or flowers too.
1/SHAADI Update 5 - it was main event 3 of 6, the very important NIKKAH Ceremony. Follow my next blog for an update of all the festivities as part of my MEGA BRITISH ASIAN MUSLIM WEDDING BLOG ๐งต ๐ ๐
2/Refer to Blog 1 for terminology but NIKKAH comes from Arabic referring to the marriage contract. In our case the official ceremony took place at Glasgow Central Mosque.
3/Glasgow's Central Mosque is the largest in Scotland built in Glasgow in 1984. It's design incorporated Arabic design with Glasgow's famous red sandstone look. Not just a mosque, it has educational & social spaces too. It also served as a vital vaccination centre during COVID.
