Senator Gene Yaw's bill, #SB831, would establish a form of subsurface eminent domain. If enough of your neighbors agree to have carbon stored in the pore space under their properties, you can't say no. 1/ Image
One of the reasons for that is the unpredictable path the CO2 plume will take once injected. 2/
Stephen Rassenfoss wrote in the Journal of Petroleum Engineering that “Plume modeling is an emerging challenge for geoscientists and petroleum engineers,...and there is a limited amount of storage data to rely on. 3/
While a lot has been learned from [enhanced oil recovery], there may well be significant differences between cycling just enough gas through a reservoir to increase production & injecting as much gas as possible for permanent storage, often in unfamiliar sorts of formations.” 4/
Your state representatives could vote as early as Saturday on a bill that would open the state to carbon capture and storage. Tell them to vote NO to #SB831.
Send a quick letter here, call, email, fax, tweet at them.

On Tuesday, the PA House Consumer Protection, Technology, & Utilities committee will vote on a HUGELY consequential bill without holding a public hearing on it. The bill opens PA to Carbon Capture & Storage. Here are some points we're sending members. #handsoffourporespace 🧵
We are out of time for necessary site characterization - Identifying sites where CO2 will stay put once injected is not an easy task. @NaomiOreskes discusses it in her essay in @sciam 2/scientificamerican.com/article/the-fa…
A key provision in the bill is a form of subsurface eminent domain that deprives landowners the right to say no to their pore space being used for CO2 sequestration of enough neighbors say yes. Why? Because the injected CO2 plume's path is unpredictable. 3/

"In a statement emailed later to WHYY, Shapiro’s spokesman Manuel Bonder criticized the protesters for ignoring the climate benefits of clean hydrogen production." How perfect foolish of you to even suggest such a thing, @GovernorShapiro. 🧵whyy.org/articles/hydro…
We are well aware of what Hydrogen will do to the climate. It's why we have been begging you to pay attention to the nationally- and internationally-recognized experts we have lined up month after month for briefings. 2/vimeo.com/showcase/10208…
We have written letters to you imploring you to meet with us to discuss the recommendations we first sent to you and your transition team. You shared the 100 days follow up letter with your secret climate committee. 3/…b-4e80-8fe9-5c576d8cdc6c.usrfiles.com/ugd/4825d0_0fd…

There's no whole-of-government coordination of carbon capture & storage. Multiple agencies from DOE, EPA, IRS, PHMSA & ACOE have responsibilities for funding, permitting, & oversight yet there are startling disconnects between agencies & CCS programs. #NoRulesNoCO2Pipelines 🧵 Image
For instance, the IRS is responsible for coordinating with @EPA to verify that the tax credits claimed by companies for CCS are valid. However, neither agency has regulations, personnel or systems in place for verifying the tax credits. #NoRulesNoCO2Pipelines 2/
No cradle-to-grave manifest is yet required for tracking CO2 from the point of capture to its final destination. There is no way to verify industry claims about how much CO2 has been captured or sequestered. #NoRulesNoCO2Pipelines 3/

@GovernorShapiro We didn't see your statement on the studies that found children in proximity of fracking are more likely to develop lymphoma and suffer other health impacts. 🧵
The only thing press release you issued today is entitled Pennsylvania is Open for Business: Bipartisan Budget Includes Governor Shapiro’s Proposed Funding to Spur Job Creation, Foster Innovation, and Make Pennsylvania More Economically Competitive 2/
Seems a little tone deaf the day after a major industry in Pennsylvania has been linked to rare cancers and more in our children, no? 3/

Let's pretend that the idea of capturing methane is a good one because it would actually help us stop the bleeding until we can transition off of #methanegas and not a terrible one because your cynical gov't would just say, "See? We fixed it! Full speed ahead!"
(See @GovernorTomWolf's statement when he announced PA's methane rule on new wells)

We are the ones, Governor.
We are the ones whose experiences informed your decision to ban fracking in the Delaware River Basin.
We are the ones whose experiences contribute in large part to the “scientific and technical literature and the reports, studies, findings and conclusions of other government agencies” you reviewed.
