One of the most recurring gripes by enemies fighting Marathas, was how it was similar to punching water.

Marathas would just scatter before any field victory of their enemy, then regroup and maintain Total War.

The first one to face this was Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj himself! Image
Asaf Jah Nizam of Hyderabad admitted in 1728 how the genocidal Mughal campaign in Deccan from 1680-1707 which led to death of millions was funded only by Bengal Subah (whose people did absolutely nothing to stop this) while Marathas always remained undefeated, beggaring Mughals. Image
Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja himself faced this during his 1656 Campaign against the Jayavalli Maratha Chandrarao More dynasty.

Even before this campaign, Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja intervened in Jayavalli's succession disputed & planted Yesajirao as the Chandrarao Maharaja. Image
However on attaining maturity, Chandrarao More broke off all pretenses of alliance.

Digressing that Shri Mahabaleshwar Shiva was their only Overlord (Chandrarao Mores presented their rule as Shiva's Earthly custodians just like Mewar Sisodiyas did), they insolently provoked war. Image
The Verulkar Bhonsale forces were actually cleanly defeated by Chandrarao Mores in their first invasion. This battle is of course forgotten.

Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja then doubled down on his preparations and marched furiously into their Chandrapuri capital city. Image
In the second invasion, the More army was seemingly defeated.

In order to prevent guerilla attacks in the occupied city, the granary was looted and stashed by Bhonsale army and the forests surrounding Chandrapuri were cut down to clear visibility for about a kilometer. Image
It has to be emphasized again and again that up to this point (1656), we don't have any real record of Bhonsales engaging in Kutayuddha as a policy. It is all straightforward.

Chandrarao More army forced the hand of Bhonsales, when they regrouped and attacked them in the night. Image
Due to their awareness of terrain, Chandrarao Mores had built shacks all along the hills of Jayavalli, and they would attack at random. Almost impossible to defeat in a single blow.

It is then recorded, that Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja deployed his spies all over that region. Image
अकपटकटकोपिशाहसूनुः
सकपटवैरिचमूविनाशनाय ।
स्वयमपि कुटिलां मतिं विदधे
भवति हि मायिनि माधवोऽपि मायी ॥

"Son of Shahaji was straightforward & preferred face-to-face battle, but He too took recourse to Kutayuddha taken by His enemies.
Towards a cunning enemy, Krishna is also cunning." Image
The locations of Chandrarao More army garrisons were identified, and Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja's general rode out (Senapati Netojirao Palkar Gujar?) and found those enemies totally unaware.
Eating, sleeping, like undisciplined oafs.
This was war, an invasion, not a clown show. Image
Imagine if a Sultanate army caught upon a Hindu force like this. What a tragedy that would be.

But the era of tragedies was over. Era of undisciplined armies was over.

In an extended action, Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja's Senadhinatha wiped out the entire Chandrarao force. Image
Thus a clean conquest over the Jayavalli country was attained. By using the method of Ashwatthama.

अश्वत्थामेव कोपाविकलितमनाः खङ्गमादाय तीक्ष्णं
दीनां लीनां निकुञ्जष्वपि तरुविचरते तां चकर्ताप्यशेषाम् ।

Pratapavarman More fled to Bijapur for aid as his country was taken over. Image
The entire Jayavalli area was annexed & became core of the new Maratha Empire. Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja's elder brother was already dead, and now he had entirely conquered a proper kingdom.

So by satisfying all criteria, he carried out his first official Coronation in 1656. Image
3 years later Pratapvarman More would return with Afzal Khan Abdullah Muhammadshahi and the Imperial Adilshahi army to try and retake Jayavalli.

By then Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja had mastered the lay of the land and was ready, to be garlanded with the entrails of Afzal. Image

Forgotten Monument of the Maratha Empire.

Shikhar Shingnapur.

What you see in front of you, is a Samadhi to Maharaja Shahaji Bhonsale, Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja, and Dharamveer Chattrapati Sambhaji Maharaja.

And built by Hindupati Padshah Chattrapati Shahu Maharaja himself! Image
Deliberately hidden from history despite its significance.

Unmaintained, and regularly vandalized by neighbouring sub-altern hordes.

In any ideal self-respecting country, this place, located in the most scenic zone possible, would be maintained with utmost care and beauty. Image
Information on these monuments is hidden, to make it look like Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja and others were "forgotten" by "next generation" of Marathas after 1680-1707 27 Years War of Hindu Liberation.

Instead a majestic memorial, well-planned with gardening, was commissioned! Image

Meaning of Raja 🚩

Many Lord-Tier (in European sensibility) Hindu Rulers used the title Raja.
Its use has been mocked by many neech quibblers.
Raja IS equated to the European Rex-King but note that it does NOT precisely mean that in Hindu Context.

Our Shastras provide context. Image
प्रजासु च विरक्तासु राज्यकामदुघासु वै ।
कृच्छ्रेणोपार्जितोऽपार्थो राजशब्दो भविष्यति ॥

Bereft of the attachment of the subjects (their presence as a key factor), the title Raja (thus in context, Delighter of Subjects) acquired with very great difficulty, shall become meaningless. Image
प्रजानां रंजनाद्राजा येयं रूढिरुपार्जिता ।
तस्यां रूढ्यां प्रनष्टायां राज्यमेव विनंक्ष्यति ॥

A King is called Rājā as he makes the people delighted.
This is the conventional meaning acquired (by the word) and if that convention gets spoilt & lost, his very kingdom shall perish. Image

Futuhat-E-Alamgiri gives the clearest account of Chattrapati Sambhaji Maharaja's final battle at Sangameshwar.

Muqarrab Khan and his sons (all were great generals) with their best troops surrounded the place.

Dharamveer emerged out like a lion.

400 Marathas & 250 Mughals died. Image
Note that most Maratha soldiers had been sent off to Raigad, to distract Muqarrab Khan. The trick didn't work as Mughals didn't pursue that contingent.

This record about slaying 400 Marathas is also exaggeration.
They likely mostly killed the Pujaris with Chattrapati instead. Image
Futuhat has the most realistic figures.

While Nushka-E-Dilkasha of Bhimsen Saxen avoids describing the battle, he tells very PRECISELY Chattrapati Sambhaji Maharaja was in Sangameshwar for performing Sadhana.

And Khafi Khan supports it by saying he performed bath in Banganga. Image

Why do people get so defensive about Chattrapati Sambhaji Maharaja's "defection" to the Mughal camp when Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja was away?

It is very clearly explained in his officially commissioned Sanskrit biography written by Kavi Paramanand.

Problem is nobody reads it. Image
In simplest terms:

1. As a child, Chattrapati Sambhaji Shivaji Bhonsale had been propped up by Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja as his scapegoat agent in Mughal court to influence their politics.

2. The 2 Mughal statesmen Prince Sambhajiraje targetted were Muazzam and Diler Khan.
3. This plan of Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja, to eventually place Muazzam on Mughal throne and take him as excuse to march against Delhi, failed due to Muazzam breaking in pressure to his father.

4. However the bond of Prince Sambhajiraje with both Diler Khan & Muazzam remained.

Noticed the blow-out?

1. Satara Chattrapati Pratapasimha calls Gaikwads & Shindes Shudras.
2. Adhatrao Supekar Pawars call their entire matrimonial circle Satshudra.
3. Tanjavur Queen calls her husband (family) Shudra.
4. Colaba Angre Dowager calls Gwalior Angres illegitimate.
All of them have ONE element in common.
1830s.

1. A case of no sources & false testimonies. Its never referred to again for being completely wrong.
2. Its merely meant to justify ritual status.
3. A false testimony to defeat EICo.
4. A false testimony based on another false one. Image
Marathas obsessively attempted to protect their property hold even at cost of Varna claims. Its clear from this case:
