Meaning of Raja 🚩

Many Lord-Tier (in European sensibility) Hindu Rulers used the title Raja.
Its use has been mocked by many neech quibblers.
Raja IS equated to the European Rex-King but note that it does NOT precisely mean that in Hindu Context.

Our Shastras provide context. प्रजासु च विरक्तासु राज्यकामदुघासु वै ।
कृच्छ्रेणोपार्जितोऽपार्थो राजशब्दो भविष्यति ॥

Bereft of the attachment of the subjects (their presence as a key factor), the title Raja (thus in context, Delighter of Subjects) acquired with very great difficulty, shall become meaningless.

Futuhat-E-Alamgiri gives the clearest account of Chattrapati Sambhaji Maharaja's final battle at Sangameshwar.

Muqarrab Khan and his sons (all were great generals) with their best troops surrounded the place.

Dharamveer emerged out like a lion.

400 Marathas & 250 Mughals died. Note that most Maratha soldiers had been sent off to Raigad, to distract Muqarrab Khan. The trick didn't work as Mughals didn't pursue that contingent.

This record about slaying 400 Marathas is also exaggeration.
They likely mostly killed the Pujaris with Chattrapati instead.

Why do people get so defensive about Chattrapati Sambhaji Maharaja's "defection" to the Mughal camp when Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja was away?

It is very clearly explained in his officially commissioned Sanskrit biography written by Kavi Paramanand.

From the contemporary historic Sanskrit text Shivakavya of Kavi Sankarshan Sakalkale.

This rare text covers history of Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja from 1655 to early 1660s, as he faces his cunning enemies and counters them. अकपटकटकोपिशाहसूनुः
सकपटवैरिचमूविनाशनाय ।
स्वयमपि कुटिलां मतिं विदधे
भवति हि मायिनि माधवोऽपि मायी ॥

"Son of Shahaji was straightforward & preferred face-to-face battle, but He too took recourse to Kutayuddha taken by His enemies.
Towards a cunning enemy, Krishna is also cunning."

One of the most recurring gripes by enemies fighting Marathas, was how it was similar to punching water.

Nawaz Khan records that AFTER a fight with "Bairagis" (Bargis? Shirkes), he was at Sangameshwar.

Yaksha Worship was an extensive element of Satavahana State, since the royal Kulin Kshatriya Satavahana family asserted descent from Yaksha Sata of Rajgir Magadha.

Sata's son Satavahana rode on Sata in form of a lion to Maharashtra, and was adopted by King Dvipakarni of Paithan.
