One of the most recurring gripes by enemies fighting Marathas, was how it was similar to punching water.
Marathas would just scatter before any field victory of their enemy, then regroup and maintain Total War.
The first one to face this was Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj himself!
Asaf Jah Nizam of Hyderabad admitted in 1728 how the genocidal Mughal campaign in Deccan from 1680-1707 which led to death of millions was funded only by Bengal Subah (whose people did absolutely nothing to stop this) while Marathas always remained undefeated, beggaring Mughals.
Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja himself faced this during his 1656 Campaign against the Jayavalli Maratha Chandrarao More dynasty.
Even before this campaign, Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja intervened in Jayavalli's succession disputed & planted Yesajirao as the Chandrarao Maharaja.
However on attaining maturity, Chandrarao More broke off all pretenses of alliance.
Digressing that Shri Mahabaleshwar Shiva was their only Overlord (Chandrarao Mores presented their rule as Shiva's Earthly custodians just like Mewar Sisodiyas did), they insolently provoked war.
The Verulkar Bhonsale forces were actually cleanly defeated by Chandrarao Mores in their first invasion. This battle is of course forgotten.
Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja then doubled down on his preparations and marched furiously into their Chandrapuri capital city.
In the second invasion, the More army was seemingly defeated.
In order to prevent guerilla attacks in the occupied city, the granary was looted and stashed by Bhonsale army and the forests surrounding Chandrapuri were cut down to clear visibility for about a kilometer.
It has to be emphasized again and again that up to this point (1656), we don't have any real record of Bhonsales engaging in Kutayuddha as a policy. It is all straightforward.
Chandrarao More army forced the hand of Bhonsales, when they regrouped and attacked them in the night.
Due to their awareness of terrain, Chandrarao Mores had built shacks all along the hills of Jayavalli, and they would attack at random. Almost impossible to defeat in a single blow.
It is then recorded, that Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja deployed his spies all over that region.
"Son of Shahaji was straightforward & preferred face-to-face battle, but He too took recourse to Kutayuddha taken by His enemies.
Towards a cunning enemy, Krishna is also cunning."
The locations of Chandrarao More army garrisons were identified, and Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja's general rode out (Senapati Netojirao Palkar Gujar?) and found those enemies totally unaware.
Eating, sleeping, like undisciplined oafs.
This was war, an invasion, not a clown show.
Imagine if a Sultanate army caught upon a Hindu force like this. What a tragedy that would be.
But the era of tragedies was over. Era of undisciplined armies was over.
In an extended action, Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja's Senadhinatha wiped out the entire Chandrarao force.
Thus a clean conquest over the Jayavalli country was attained. By using the method of Ashwatthama.
Pratapavarman More fled to Bijapur for aid as his country was taken over.
The entire Jayavalli area was annexed & became core of the new Maratha Empire. Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja's elder brother was already dead, and now he had entirely conquered a proper kingdom.
So by satisfying all criteria, he carried out his first official Coronation in 1656.
3 years later Pratapvarman More would return with Afzal Khan Abdullah Muhammadshahi and the Imperial Adilshahi army to try and retake Jayavalli.
By then Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja had mastered the lay of the land and was ready, to be garlanded with the entrails of Afzal.

Yaksha Worship was an extensive element of Satavahana State, since the royal Kulin Kshatriya Satavahana family asserted descent from Yaksha Sata of Rajgir Magadha.
Sata's son Satavahana rode on Sata in form of a lion to Maharashtra, and was adopted by King Dvipakarni of Paithan.
Getting unfollowed by delusional wannabe Satavahana dynasty-spawn after breaking their Nashik Caves propaganda will never stop being our favourite achievement.
Satavahanas established Chaturvarna with perfection. It is asinine to assume they were themselves Non-Kshatriyas.
Naneghat Inscription shows that Satavahana family held Balarama in great regard.
There is no rationale behind propagandists claiming that comparison to 2nd Rama after Kakutstha Rama (alongside OTHER Kulin Kshatriyas) is a reference to Bhargava ParshuRama & not Yadava BalaRama.
A lot of successful battles of Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaj's reign are overlooked simply because of how smoothly they were won.
Battle of Umrani was a victory won by Prataprao Sarsenapati Kudtojiraje Gujar so smoothly that it was considered worthy as climax of a Sanskrit Akhyan.
The Maratha Cavalry was unparalleled in its discipline and capable of marching in large numbers without making any noise.
This allowed them to successfully pincer their enemies again & again throughout history.
In this case, Battle of Umrani, it was critical to Maratha victory.
The Adilshahi Empire sent their response units as soon as they learnt of the capture of Panhala Fort by the famed Farzand Kondajirao Ravalekar and Surnavis Annaji Datto Pandit on 6 March 1673 CE.
Chattrapati Shivaji Maharaja countered them swiftly, commanding by remote-control.
Jayajirao's status was infintely higher than Maru Pradeshi upstarts', and Rajput narratives of this are fake Post-Truths to justify planned treachery by beggar-garbed Rathores.
"The world will forever remember the day of the charge of Appa (Maharaja Jayajirao Appasaheb Shinde), when 3 Kings (Marwar, Bikaner, Rupnagar) fled away from Him with all their accessories and baggage!"
2 contemporary 1755 Maratha Reports clearly state that Maharaja Shrimant Rajamanyavirajita Rajeshri Jayajirao Appasaheb Shinde was murdered treacherously.
The First 2 snippets are detailed narrative from contemporary Maratha Chronicle Bhausahebanchi Bakhar FULLY supporting them.
Another Murti of Shri Siddhi Vinayak Ganapati installed by Maratha Senasahebsubah Raghuji Bhonsale 👑
Kali Gali, Cuttack, Odisha.
It is said Murti's base here was part of a lost Throne of great Odiya Hindu King Shri Jajati (Yayati) Keshari II who ruled between 1025 – 1040 CE.
Nagpureshwara Nrupavara Narendra Sakala-Tirtha-Swarupa Sakala-Guna-Sampanna Akhandita-Lakshmi-Alankruta Vishwasnidhi Maratha Senadhurandhar Sarkar Senasahebsubah Rajamanya Rajashri Raghuji Bimbaji Bhonsale is said to've found the Murti as well as Keshari throne base & placed it.
It is a bit incredible to imagine this gorgeous carved stone is not just religiously significant with Siddhi Vinayak's beauty, but a 950+ year old royal Odiya heritage piece as well.
Santos Pereira cites the case of Proenças of Calangute who have a common ancestry with the Ranes of Sanquelim and the Mergulhãos of Navelim who have a common ancestry with Timoja who helped Albuquerque in fight against the Adilshahi Empire.

Leonardo Pais in his Promptuario Das Definições Indicas published in Lisbon in 1713 writes:
"From among the Chardós are the brave Dom Lourenco de Lisboa and Zoitaji Rane, who served His Majesty (The Portuguese Empire) valiantly in the battles of Ceylon."
Note this carefully.
Note that both the Marathas, the Convert Dom Lourenco de Lisboa and the Hindu Zoitaji Rane are clearly referred to as Chardós.
