Scroll was notified of a potential exploit within our ecosystem.

After verification with the RhoMarket team, we initiated a coordinated response. To thoroughly assess the situation, Scroll decided to temporarily delay the finalization of the chain.

We have confirmed that the exploit was application-specific.

Currently, RhoMarket is leading the response efforts, and we can confirm that finalization is no longer delayed.

Why does this upgrade matter?

Reducing gas fees has always been our top priority. Darwin upgrade is aimed at decreasing the gas fees on Scroll.

This is achieved by using a single aggregated proof for multiple batches, eliminating the need to finalize each batch individually.
Gas costs in zkEVM come from:

- L1 fees to publish L2 transaction data on Ethereum
- Hardware fees to generate validity proofs
- L1 fees for verifying validity proofs

Proof verification is a major cost. Reducing finalization costs has the biggest impact on saving gas fees. Image
