Introducing Scroll's Bernoulli Upgrade 🚀

Our latest protocol enhancement includes added support for EIP-4844, decreasing the cost of @Scroll_ZKP transactions by up to 10x.

We've been busy!

It's the end of the week, so here's the weekly recap: This week has been full of stress testing. Scroll Alpha has been settling ~300,000 transactions per day!

We pushed a lot of stability improvements to our Alpha testnet this week to support the higher load.

ETHDenver was a blast! We had 55 fantastic submissions compete for $16,000 in bounties.

Here are the winners: Our "Applied ZK, with a side of Scroll" category was for dApps that leveraged ZK in interesting ways.

We had two winners, grabbing $1500 each:

An update: To accelerate plans for developing our zkEVM, pursue cutting-edge research, and continue building with a broader community, we've raised capital from a global set of participants. We are humbled to have had substantial interest in our progress. Scroll is, and always will be, a scaling solution and ecosystem built for the global Ethereum community.

For nearly two years, we've built our zkEVM in the open alongside @PrivacyScaling and other contributors, and today, we're taking the next step to Goerli, the final stage before mainnet.

Our testnet on Goerli is 100% permissionless.

Here are the details: ZK is an essential component for the future of blockchains.

Just a few years ago, zkEVMs were entirely theoretical, but an incredibly talented community of researchers and builders have combined efforts to make it a reality.

Let's dive in: We're hard at work laying the foundations for our next testnet on Goerli. Our Alpha Testnet is on the way!

We've set up new multi-VM infrastructure, rolled out an improved load balancer, and continue to work on stability improvements.

For nearly two years, we've been heads-down building a bytecode-compatible zkEVM in public.

Today, we're increasing that transparency even further by introducing regular weekly updates.

Here's what we were up to this week: Systems are being set up and prepped for future deployment on Goerli. More details Soon™

We've also made progress on an improved v2 bridge design which should result in a smoother experience!

Our most recent testnet upgrade included a huge performance boost: batching.

Here's how it works: Previously, our testnet generated a proof individually for every L2 block, regardless of the number of transactions within it.

With our new batching system, instead of proving blocks individually, blocks are now aggregated into batches.

Our scheduled testnet reset has been carried out successfully 🛠

Users and developers can now interact and deploy smart contracts onto the updated version of our Pre-Alpha!

Here's a quick explainer + how to contribute: Ethereum's EIP-4844 upgrade will create a new type of data storage for rollups that is more scalable than simply storing it in CALLDATA.

This results in greater scaling and cheaper rollup fees!

Here's what Scroll did in 2022: The Pre-Alpha testnet went live in August. Some stats:

- 397k+ unique addresses
- 6300+ unique contracts deployed
- 600+ unique tokens deployed

Average daily transaction volume: ~32k

On January 9th, our team will be performing a scheduled Pre-Alpha reset in order to roll out some new and exciting performance optimizations that will help drive a higher throughput in our Pre-Alpha testnet!

Today's zero-knowledge proofs have a big bottleneck: proof generation is slow and expensive.

Polynomial commitment schemes are critical to Ethereum’s scaling solutions.

These schemes will be used in Danksharding, as well as in the proof systems behind Scroll. What are polynomial commitment schemes? And how will they help scale Ethereum?
