It's time for the Paris Olympics, but COVID is still raging on despite what some suggest.
LCF has created a sheet of Olympians who have been sidelined due to SARS-CoV-2 Infections, Long COVID, or due to the Pandemic in general. Plus more!

🧵🧵🧵
This list is surely incomplete, but there are at least 90 Olympic Athletes that were unable to compete in an Olympics due to the COVID Pandemic (61 due to contracting COVID or Long COVID directly).
There are 21 with Long COVID. This is with the Paris games just getting underway.
The COVID protocols for Paris are basically non-existent compared to just 3 years ago when the protocol were very stringent.
Make sure you donate to this fundraiser so people with #LongCOVID can get a #LC Biomarkers Test validated. Better testing means more Long Haulers can be identified & can start receiving the treatments needed. Even Olympians.
Actress Salma Hayek revealed she had a life threatening case of COVID-19 (5/2020) & suffered from #LongCOVID.
“My doctor begged me to go to the hospital because it was so bad,” Hayek said. “I said, ‘No, thank you. I’d rather die at home.’”

She needed supplemental oxygen at one point during her illness & ended up needing to spend around seven weeks quarantining in one room of her home, away from her husband & their 13-year-old daughter. Hayek spent the majority of 2020 recovering from the virus.
Hayek has yet to return to her previous energy levels (of 5/2021). Hayek said she is grateful that her filming schedule is light, given how much more easily she gets fatigued. “I had started doing Zooms at one point, but I could only do so many because I would get so tired”.
Jonathan Toews', Chicago Blackhawks Hockey Player, chronic illness journey started in February of 2020.
He missed the entire 2020-21 season due to illness & revealed he had “chronic immune response syndrome."

“I just think there were a lot of things that just piled up where my body just fell apart,” Toews said. “... they’re calling it chronic immune response syndrome where I just couldn’t quite recover & my immune system was reacting to everything that I did, any kind of stress.”
Toews also told the Athletic that he’s “probably a COVID long-hauler” dating to February 2020. “That was the frustrating part was not knowing when or how we were going to get over the hump,” he says.
He has since stated that he is a COVID Long Hauler.
We spoke with Evan Low’s office regarding AB3119 again & have an update on the bill’s language, which is a Long COVID Bill that had LC removed from it by Long COVID Orgs. Specifically Lisa McCorkell of Patient Led & Angela Vazquez of Body Politic+.

🧵🧵🧵
The bill can’t currently be changed, but once out of the current committee they will work to get Long COVID put back in the bill once on the floor.
What that will look like exactly is unclear, but they will email us when changes are made, which will we share with the community.
It might be a combination of the original Long COVID Bill & the altered one & still have “Infection Associated Chronic Conditions” as the focus, with Long COVID stuck in the body somewhere.
This brings up an important question, besides the language.
Who else would like to know why “Long COVID” is being erased from Long COVID Bills? It’s being replaced with terms such as Infection Associated Chronic Conditions.
You can see the removal of #LongCOVID in this California BIll #AB3119.
Thanks @LCAPCure for bringing this to our attention.
We are appalled at the attempted erasure of Long COVID.
This has been one of the biggest concerns for LCF. That Long COVID will be pushed into vagueness, renamed, & repackaged … not for the patients’ benefit.
This is where people never receive proper testing & treatments. Where mitigation doesn’t become an important focus because well, Long COVID is nothing new. It’s just one of those IACCs & post viral.
Unfortunately, it is unique. We have to fight for it to be treated as such.
Dave Navarro, guitarist from Jane's Addiction & RHCP, is another that's made the list of notable COVID Long Haulers.
He caught COVID 12/2021. Navarro explained on Instagram "So yeah, I'm one of the ones who came down with the 'Long Haul COVID.'"

"Been sick since December and supposedly will be back to my old self in… nobody knows how long." (Article was published 5/31/22)
"If there are any of you who are still suffering … I'm just saying you aren't alone," he wrote.
"The fatigue and isolation is pretty awful but try to spend your time with the ones you love and stay creative. That's how I'm trying to get through this thing. Also lots of spiritual practices, meditation and yoga have been very helpful. I'll be OK, just don't know when."
We would like to publicly state that we do not agree with Patient Led’s characterization of #LongCOVID.
There is a lot of science to show COVID is persistent, as well as the spike. We cannot ignore this. It would be harmful to do so.

We appreciate Hannah taking the time to clarify the first part of her video.
It takes a lot of energy, as we know, to talk to the public and clarify things while we have LC, but it’s incredibly important to do so. We hope this continues in the future for more community clarity.
