1/ Observations from a Russian milblogger on the deficiencies in Russia's "grinding strategy" in Ukraine, based on his experiences of playing Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness as an orc (!). He recommends that Russia's "real Horde" should learn the same lessons: ⬇️
2/ "By the way, personally, when I was 7 years old, I compared the grinding strategy with a properly prepared combat operation. And all this thanks to the Warcraft 2 strategy game.
3/ "The experiment was as follows. I played for the Horde against the Alliance, the computer and I started the mission in the same economic conditions: 3-4 farmhands, the main building, a couple of residential buildings.
4/ "Whoever develops faster and builds an army will have the initiative.
I decided to try the computer's tactics and throw 1 orc soldier into battle as quickly as possible.
5/ "Without upgrading weapons in the forge, without the support of shooters (axe-throwing trolls), without artillery (catapults). As a result, my single orcs quickly died in one-on-one combat with the Alliance swordsmen, of whom there were also 1-2.
6/ "The only thing I got was a revealed map [and] knowledge of the position of the enemy base. But at the same time, I could not accumulate resources for developing weapons in the forge and for developing troops in the barracks.
7/ "Plus, while my orcs were individually dragging themselves from my end of the map to the other end, the Alliance was accumulating resources and gradually increased the number of warriors standing in defence to 4-5, who were killing my loners in droves.
8/ "By the way, this gave me an understanding of the "supply shoulder" [delivery distance] and logistics - before I learned the scientific definitions of these terms.
This was exhaustion as a result of an attempt to grind. Only I was exhausted, not the enemy.
9/ "Fortunately, I had given up on overconsuming unprepared personnel in time in favour of developing weapons and troops. First, this allowed me to repel the Alliance counterattack, and then form a detachment for the offensive, which destroyed the enemy base.
10/ "This is how I realised for myself that:
- Overtaking economic development;
- Balancing the quantity and quality of the army at the start;
- Betting on being ahead in military-technical superiority;
- Formation of an offensive grouping superior in quantity and quality.....
11/ "-... are the key to victory.
I was 7 years old when I realised this, using the comparative method.
12/ "Meanwhile, 2.5 years have passed since the [start of the] largest war in Europe since WWII. And the lowest quality of training of reinforcements + slowness in the military-technical race + betting on attacking with troops that are not provided with sufficient fire support...
13/ "+ an offensive spread across all sections of the front – all this remains the credo of the strategists of our real Horde.
1/ A Russian soldier has been sentenced to 13 years' imprisonment in a maximum security penal colony for stealing a weapon, getting drunk, and carrying out a mass shooting in Miass. The case is part of a record crime wave in Russia, partially fuelled by the war in Ukraine. ⬇️
2/ The unnamed junior sergeant stole an fellow soldier's assault rifle and ammunition earlier in 2023. At 1 AM on 10 September 2023, he decided to steal a truck, hit the driver in the face, took away the keys and drove away in it. However, he was soon stopped by traffic police.
3/ The police did not arrest him. That evening, he went drinking with friends and learned of a conflict between one of them and two brothers. He got into a friend's car around 9 PM, armed with the assault rifle, and spotted the brothers in a crowd on Miass's Sverdlova Street.
1/ A new type of Russian kamikaze drone, known as the Gerbera, was used in this week's large-scale drone attack on Ukraine. Derived from Iran's Shahed drone, technical details of the Gerbera have been published on Telegram. ⬇️
2/ The Russian Weapons Telegram channel reports that the Gerbera can be used in multiple configurations, including reconnaissance, as decoys, or as a one way attack drone:
3/ "In the reconnaissance configuration, this drone can be equipped with a multispectral television and thermal imaging optical-electronic module with a short-/medium-wave IR channel, as well as a command and telemetry channel and a channel for transmitting video images from…
1/ More details have emerged of the life of the late Nikita Fedyanin, the administrator of the Grey Zone Telegram channel and Wagner Group fighter. An interview with his mother provides insights into his career and last assignment. ⬇️
2/ According to Fedyanin's mother Nina Ivanovna, he was born and lived in Lipetsk, about 370 km (220 mi) south-east of Moscow. Fedyanin attended the local university and graduated with honors. He received a second degree in law from a Moscow university.
3/ Fedyanin subsequently studied at the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (pictured below), but just before defending his diploma he dropped out. He signed a new contract with Wagner and went to Africa in January 2024 to fight in Mali.
1/ Russian soldiers in the Kherson region appear to have found an unusual solution for storing water and keeping themselves cool in the current extremely hot temperatures in southern Ukraine. ⬇️
2/ The soldiers appear to have excavated a plastic-lined pit at least 50 cm deep and about 170 cm long, covered with a lid to reduce evaporation, and filled with water. It's unclear whether it's meant purely for washing or whether it's meant to be used as drinking water too.
3/ Given how closely observed the front line is by Ukrainian drones, it's likely that this is some way in the rear where the Russians would be able to create structures like this more safely.
1/ Russian forces in southern Ukraine appear to be experiencing an increasingly desperate shortage of water. Water rations for all personnel – from soldiers in the trenches to fighter pilots – are now limited to only 1 l (36 oz) per day, as little as 8% of what they need. ⬇️
2/ The Fighterbomber Telegram channel last week posted an appeal to Russian companies to supply Russian Air Force regiments with bottled water. It reports that 3,300 litres have now been donated to one airfield – enough to last a month.
3/ However, seven more regiments still need a total of 23 tonnes of water (23,000 litres / 6,000 US gallons). The huge shortfall almost certainly indicates a major breakdown in Russian logistics across the region, exacerbated by drought and the destruction of the Kahkovka Dam.
1/ The aviation component of Russia's nuclear triad is said to be at serious risk of failure due to possible corruption at Russia's United Engine Corporation. This has come to light after the crash of a Tu-160M strategic bomber on which Vladimir Putin flew in February 2024. ⬇️
2/ On 22 February 2024, Putin flew on Tu-160M no. 801. The Tu-160M is the world's largest, heaviest and fastest bomber, designed to carry nuclear-capable free-fall bombs or air-launched cruise missiles carried on a rotary launcher.
3/ Less than two months after Putin flew on it, the same aircraft crashed on take-off at the Kazan Aircraft Plant on 11 April 2024. A leaked letter reportedly from the Scientific Production Enterprise (NPP) "Temp" named after F. Korotkov describes what happened:
