1/ A new type of Russian kamikaze drone, known as the Gerbera, was used in this week's large-scale drone attack on Ukraine. Derived from Iran's Shahed drone, technical details of the Gerbera have been published on Telegram. ⬇️
2/ The Russian Weapons Telegram channel reports that the Gerbera can be used in multiple configurations, including reconnaissance, as decoys, or as a one way attack drone:
3/ "In the reconnaissance configuration, this drone can be equipped with a multispectral television and thermal imaging optical-electronic module with a short-/medium-wave IR channel, as well as a command and telemetry channel and a channel for transmitting video images from…
4/ …sensors installed via 4G networks, or via individual secure radio channels using repeaters for operating in a radius of more than 100 km.
5/ "In addition to the optical-electronic reconnaissance module, drones can be equipped with interferometric sensors for passive electronic reconnaissance to uncover and identify radars that detect and illuminate enemy air defense systems or active electronic warfare systems…
6/ …that operate by emitting radiation.

Also, the Gerbera UAV can be used as false targets-simulators of the electronic optical sights of other UAVs by equipping them with Luneberg lenses.
7/ "This version of the Gerbera UAV is designed to oversaturate the target channel and mislead the enemy's air defence missile system calculations. This version of the drones is equipped with INS and GLONASS/GPS correction modules.
8/ "The strike version of the drones has a similar control system and high-explosive fragmentation or thermobaric equipment. Made of foam plastic and plywood, the Gerbera UAVs have an ultra-low radar cross-section of about 0.015 - 0.03 sq. m."
9/ The drone, which is about 2 m long with a 2.5 m wingspan, was developed by the Gastello Design Bureau and is being produced by the Alabuga Polytechnic drone factory in Tatarstan. A group calling itself 'Stalin's Falcons' released a video promoting it.
10/ According to a Ukrainian analysis, its hardware is fairly simple: "navigation and control systems, batteries, and a 4G modem with a SIM card from a Ukrainian mobile network operator." Terminal guidance appears to be carried out manually by an operator.

11/ Although the performance of the drone is reported to be quite poor, it is also likely to be extremely cheap to build – much more so than the Shahed. It can be expended in large numbers to gather intelligence on Ukrainian air defences.
12/ As Defence Express notes, it can identify "Ukrainian radar systems with real-time data transmission through the Ukrainian mobile network. The decoy variant can be helpful, too, as a low-cost false target to force Ukrainians to spend expensive anti-aircraft ammunition."
13/ It's probable that this week's drone assault was conducted to gather intelligence and identify gaps in the coverage of radars and ground-based air defence systems. If so, it will likely be a prelude to a large-scale Shahed and cruise missile attack in the near future. /end

1/ More details have emerged of the life of the late Nikita Fedyanin, the administrator of the Grey Zone Telegram channel and Wagner Group fighter. An interview with his mother provides insights into his career and last assignment. ⬇️
2/ According to Fedyanin's mother Nina Ivanovna, he was born and lived in Lipetsk, about 370 km (220 mi) south-east of Moscow. Fedyanin attended the local university and graduated with honors. He received a second degree in law from a Moscow university.
3/ Fedyanin subsequently studied at the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (pictured below), but just before defending his diploma he dropped out. He signed a new contract with Wagner and went to Africa in January 2024 to fight in Mali. Image

1/ Observations from a Russian milblogger on the deficiencies in Russia's "grinding strategy" in Ukraine, based on his experiences of playing Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness as an orc (!). He recommends that Russia's "real Horde" should learn the same lessons: ⬇️
2/ "By the way, personally, when I was 7 years old, I compared the grinding strategy with a properly prepared combat operation. And all this thanks to the Warcraft 2 strategy game.
3/ "The experiment was as follows. I played for the Horde against the Alliance, the computer and I started the mission in the same economic conditions: 3-4 farmhands, the main building, a couple of residential buildings.

1/ Russian soldiers in the Kherson region appear to have found an unusual solution for storing water and keeping themselves cool in the current extremely hot temperatures in southern Ukraine. ⬇️
2/ The soldiers appear to have excavated a plastic-lined pit at least 50 cm deep and about 170 cm long, covered with a lid to reduce evaporation, and filled with water. It's unclear whether it's meant purely for washing or whether it's meant to be used as drinking water too.
3/ Given how closely observed the front line is by Ukrainian drones, it's likely that this is some way in the rear where the Russians would be able to create structures like this more safely.

1/ Russian forces in southern Ukraine appear to be experiencing an increasingly desperate shortage of water. Water rations for all personnel – from soldiers in the trenches to fighter pilots – are now limited to only 1 l (36 oz) per day, as little as 8% of what they need. ⬇️ Image
2/ The Fighterbomber Telegram channel last week posted an appeal to Russian companies to supply Russian Air Force regiments with bottled water. It reports that 3,300 litres have now been donated to one airfield – enough to last a month.
3/ However, seven more regiments still need a total of 23 tonnes of water (23,000 litres / 6,000 US gallons). The huge shortfall almost certainly indicates a major breakdown in Russian logistics across the region, exacerbated by drought and the destruction of the Kahkovka Dam.

1/ The aviation component of Russia's nuclear triad is said to be at serious risk of failure due to possible corruption at Russia's United Engine Corporation. This has come to light after the crash of a Tu-160M strategic bomber on which Vladimir Putin flew in February 2024. ⬇️ Image
2/ On 22 February 2024, Putin flew on Tu-160M no. 801. The Tu-160M is the world's largest, heaviest and fastest bomber, designed to carry nuclear-capable free-fall bombs or air-launched cruise missiles carried on a rotary launcher.
3/ Less than two months after Putin flew on it, the same aircraft crashed on take-off at the Kazan Aircraft Plant on 11 April 2024. A leaked letter reportedly from the Scientific Production Enterprise (NPP) "Temp" named after F. Korotkov describes what happened:

1/ Despite searing temperatures of up to 40°C (104°F), Russian fighter pilots in Ukraine and southern Russia are reportedly being issued with only 1 litre (36 oz) of water per day. In between sorties, they are said to be driving around nearby villages begging for water. ⬇️ Image
2/ The Fighterbomber Telegram channel has published a despairing post complaining about a chronic shortage of drinking water for Russian pilots stationed at forward airfields. The author writes:
3/ "The guys have been fighting from forward airfields for several months and for several months everything has been bad with food.

You can say it doesn't exist.

If with dry rations everything was solved after a time, then with water everything turned out to be difficult.
