The "Hamster wheel of outrage" is a term I use to describe how the right wing works tirelessly to keep their audience upset and angry at The Other. Yesterday Harris wasn't Black. Today a woman fighter is a man. Tomorrow will be something else to get upset over. 🧵
Before QAnon even existed there was this automated page on Facebook with some generic right wing name like "Patriot News" and it would post the same 50 or so articles with slightly different headlines every 4 hours and get so many ragebait clicks. It was low effort and effective.
I had to see the same story about Sikh's being being called Muslims and "Muslims getting special treatment in our military. DO YOU ACCEPT THIS?!" As a headline. Once in a blue moon there would be an article celebrating a conservative but it was 95% ragebait.
This is all the Right does now, find something to get people upset over and freak out over it for 24-72 hours and then onto the next outage. The audience must be kept in a constant state of anger. The world is falling apart because The Bad People are doing Bad Things.
Remember the 9/11 Mosque? How the Muslims were celebrating their victory? I bet you don't but it was a huge ordeal for a week. This is their lives. Just constantly being upset about whatever new outrage has been cooked up for them.
And if the mainstream right doesn't have enough outrage for you then QAnon will get you freaked out. People spent forever swept up baking the latest QDrops to figure out the latest moves in the war between the Patriots and the Deep State.
Q claimed Obama shot up an American flag. Q claimed the Deep State tried to shoot down Air Force One. If reality didn't upset you, you could always turn to fantasy to find something to be outraged about.
There's a reason we get a daily "Michelle Obama is a man" Tweet from QAnon promoters. Transphobia and hatred of Trans people is a easy way to anger these people. That's why this Olympics story has Elon and Trump jumping in. Everyone's outraged so everyone's happy.
A week after these Olympics are over nobody will remember Imane Khelif's name. By then the DNC will have upset these people cause somebody will have said something mean about Trump and they'll all be freaking out over that. The Outrage must endure. The hamster must keep running.
