1/ 🧵There is another anti-immigrant, racist and unsubstantiated rumour being circulated online about the tragic stabbing of a woman in #Brantham, UK. I just wanted to provide some analysis of the emergence of this rumour, and the protagonists and sequence of the story. #SouthportImage
2/ The known facts. A woman called Anita Rose was tragically stabbed and killed as as she walked her dog on Wednesday 24th July. A number of people have been arrested in the course of the investigations. Apart from age and sex, no other information has been publicly shared. Image
3/ Cue a pro-Trump account on Jul 30 says without basis that a 'Somali' man was arrested. She links to an @Daily_Express article about the murder but the article does not mention the ethnicity of the murderer. Image
4/ Then lots of anonymous accounts start also saying that they 'heard' the attacker was Somali - none providing evidence. These rumours quickly racked up hundreds of thousands of impressions. Again, no one providing any links, buts lots of 'I saw it somewhere' Image
5/ Then the 'influencers' picked up and spread the rumours. Many of those people are the exact same people who spread the false rumours about the #Southport stabbings, including @DaveAtherton20 , @europeinvasionn and @AshleaSimonBF . Again, none of them provided evidence. Image
6/ Indeed, @daveatherton20, who apologised recently for spreading false news, admits that his source for the 'Somali' conjecture are 'two followers'. Always a reliable source - two anonymous and unnamed Twitter accounts. Image
7/ Another influential account with almost 200k impressions is @europeinvasionn, which as I have mentioned several times, is a hijacked (cuckoo'd) account use to spread xenophobic & anti-Muslim hate speech. It has an absurdly amount high amount of engagement for a *new* account Image
8/ Politics-wise the head of Britain First is once again spreading the rumour (She did the same for #Southport) - again, absolutely no sources provided Image
9) The unfortunately unfamiliar strategy here seems to be someone making a claim, then using a poor excuse of a 'source' (in this case what looks like an email). The poster then posts another screenshot to highlight that she is right but it actually contains no mention of Somali

10) So rumours spread by dodgy accounts on X, then spread up a hierarchy through receptive xenophobes, right wing politicians, and anonymous accounts that appear to be part of a larger influence operation.
11) That this is happening as Sunderland burns due in part to racist disinfo in the wake of the tragic #Southport murders is an indictment that whatever Starmer says, this problem of disinfo and hate speech isn't going away over night.
12) Weirdly there's a few false claims particularly related to attackers in the UK being Somali (not quite sure why but possibly because it ticks the African and Muslim hate speech box). Here's another false but widely shared claim
Correction: I said stabbed when the cause of death is not clear
See here for a BBC article on the post mortem

1/ 🧵Just did a network analysis of the "far right thugs unite" hashtag. It largely seems to be a simulated scandal/outrage to promote the Reform Party and Nigel Farage and - while also being an attack on Keir Starmer. Image
2) The campaign is ostensibly a reaction to Starmer saying that the recent riots have been conducted by a 'tiny minority' of 'thugs'. He has also blamed the far right, although he never used the term 'far right thugs'. In fact, as we'll see later, this term was used by Farage. Image
3/ Starmer is the largest node in the network as many people are tagging him to express solidarity with the 'far right'. This is based on the false accusation that Starmer somehow called 'ordinary brits' far right thugs - which he didn't. #disinformation Image

🧵1/ Thread on the #Southport anti-migrant and anti-Muslim disinformation and propaganda. In this thread I highlight key spreaders of disinformation, the chronology, and some points about some of the inauthentic activity evident. I will focus on X. Image
2/ First. What we know so far. The attacker 17 was, born in Cardiff, but moved to near Southport. There's no indication of his religion, and his parents have been reported as being from Rwanda (although again questionable why this is relevant). The rest is speculation #southport
3/ Firstly, there were at least 27 million impressions for posts stating or speculating that the attacker was Muslim, a migrant, refugee or foreigner. There were people also denouncing these speculations - especially the more racist ones. Image

1/ Another key aspect of this campaign was the part targeting #Lebanon. The accounts below are all linked to the campaign. All of them attempt to interfere in Lebanese politics by riling up sectarian sentiment, diverting blame away from Israel and focusing on Iran and Hezbollah
Image
2/ These groups, with names like "No to the Iranian Occupation", "Shia Against War", and "the war of 2006 is remembered and will not be repeated" position themselves as groups representing real people. They all use similar TTPs & identical branding strategies. All have been
3/ suspended from Facebook but not Twitter, and many have run ads. Shia Against War, for example, paid to advertise content from the Tahoror movement (see right). However Tahoror denied any involvement with the group.

1/ 📝Excited to announce the release of "The Qatar Plot," authored by myself & @SohanDsouza. This investigation (covered in @afp today) reveals a massive influence op targeting Qatar & Muslims, including in the US, UK and EU - ahead of European Elections
sites.google.com/view/theqatarp…
Image
2/ 🚨 Our findings uncover a vast network spreading xenophobic, anti-Muslim, anti-immigration, and anti-Qatar disinformation. The operation spanned platforms like Facebook, Twitter/X, YouTube, and TikTok. To a lesser extent, the op also target Iran🌐 #Disinfo #Islamophobia Image
3/ 🇫🇷🇬🇧🇺🇸 Targeted countries include France, the UK, the USA, Germany, Spain, Sweden Saudi, and more. This network reached millions, manipulating ,public sentiment with at least 41 million reached on Facebook alone (and this is a conservative estimate). 📈 #QatarPlotReport Image

🧵1/ There is some confusion going on around the strike in Rafah. This is largely due to awful IDF instructions. In a video on 22nd May IDF spokesman @AvichayAdraee told people that Zones 2371, 2373, 2360 were safe. I have highlighted this below.
Image
2/ The source of the confusion lies in the fact that the image of the highlighted map in @AvichayAdraee's video DOES NOT match the text. The image initially does not include zones 2371, 2373, 2360 yet the text explicitly states they are safe. Image
3/ However the location of the strike has been reported to be both 2371 and 2372. Existing geolocation by @m_osint and Al Jazeera suggests it was in 2372, not 2371. Zone 2372 was not explicitly mentioned by the IDF. However...

1) Telegraph subtly trying to align pro-Palestinian voices with Chinese and Russian disinformation. No actual evidence is provided here of Chinese and Russian interference, simply a note that some pro-Palestinian accounts have fake followers. Image
2) (It should be noted that you can't control who follows you). From my point of view there are a LOT of fake accounts on X promoting various points of view. However, there is more evidence for Israel using fake accounts on FB, Insta and X to smear UNRWA aljazeera.com/news/2024/3/19…
Image
3) Interestingly, the network that was focusing on attacking UNRWA, is also focusing on blaming the Chinese/Russian/Iranian 'axis of evil'. While it's plausible China and Russia are trying to influence narratives, the narrative that China and Russia are the only ones operating
