The political dynamics of this week’s far-right riots are unique on many levels. 🧵1/ First: it’s organised/incited. Tommy Robinson’s lieutenant “Danny Tommo” issued a call: searchlightmagazine.com/2024/07/tommy-…
Image
2/ The violence is not yet mass or self-replicating. It is symbolic, to be amplified on social media. Participants are a mixture of organised far-right, racist men and locals dragged in by disinformation/criminal loyalty… it's containable by tough public order policing… Image
2a/ Court cases now coming through reveal a pattern. Charge = violent disorder. Not guilty plea = remanded in custody. Sentencing guidelines: “racial hostility” = aggravating factor, so is taking part in a riot. Max sentence = 5 years
sentencingcouncil.org.uk/offences/magis…
3/ It is a classic “alliance of elite and mob” (Arendt).

Image
4/ By agglomerating refugees, Muslims and Roma people as the primary targets, the police and Keir Starmer as the secondaries, the perpetrators are acting on the Great Replacement theory myth. This is the hallmark of global fascism… Image
5/ The rioters and their elite supporters are playing a political game: to convert as many Reform and right-wing Tory voters as possible to a “strategy of tension” and active resistance to the government. That is useful to Russia and therefore Russian bots amplify the messaging…
6/ The most dangerous events planned today are the three targeting Mosques or Islamic centres - Liverpool, Manchester and Belfast. There will be a lot of “riot theatre” today, but most voters are disgusted at the violence, and the clear ignorance/coked-up nature of the perpetrators…
7/ In defence of our democratic society we need to respond on three levels: a) tough public order policing, with exclusion zones, arrests and swift sentencing. So long as minority communities see this happening they will remain calm…
8/ … plus b) tough intervention from the media regulator and the prosecution of those inciting the violence and spreading disinfo. And c) ostracism and deplatforming of the elite "understanders", who include individuals from GB News, Talk TV, grifters and of course Farage…
9/ The wider labour and trade union movement is already mobilising in peaceful self-defence of the targeted mosques. But this is only phase one of a strategy to destabilise the government. Reform/Tory apologist for violence, plus meddling by Musk needs a strategic political response…
10/ The strategic response is to a) build an alliance of the centre and the left to keep the right/far right out of power for a generation; b) deliver on economic security and community cohesion; c) become a militant democracy, mobilised in its own self-defence; d) promote a proud anti-fascist ethos.
11/ Yes Britain does have a fascist problem, but not a big one. The big problem is the ideological merger of right-wing populism with fascism…This is their January 6th: they just lost the only sympathetic government they’re likely to see and they're in despair...
12/ I will be monitoring and analysing any violence or disorder that happens today. Follow @hopenothate and @Searchlight_mag

Yesterday's riots have woken people up to the scale of the far right challenge. But we’re still getting a lot of things wrong. 1/ The fascists achieved something: they have terrorised Britain’s BAME population. I’ve got people contacting me saying they don’t feel safe…
2/ 🧵The policing was followed the public order playbook, but it didn’t work. It’s no use just dispersing mobs and trawling the footage afterwards for arrests. It allows serious targeted violence against individuals - and with fascists, that is the point of the rioting…
3/ When BAME minorities rioted, or during the Poll Tax riot, the grievance was the police or the government. For fascist, the target is individual people of colour, their shops and places of worship - so dispersal doesn't work...

There were racist mob incidents last night in Hartlepool, Manchester, Aldershot and Whitehall, in each case stoked by online disinformation. History tells us this could escalate so we need: 1/ Swift arrest and sentencing of those inciting and committing violence...
2/ Immediate action by Ofcom to shut down any platform whose algorithm is promoting incendiary content and disinformation...
3/ An end to establishment figures, with well paid slots on "edgy" media saying the rioters have a point - by which they mean it is not racist to spread violence and libel against refugees and Muslims...

Sunday Times becomes first Murdoch newspaper to back Labour ... the rationale is functionalist: my car keeps breaking down so I must change it... 1/ Image
2/ ... but it offers no clue as to why the car is so faulty... only that changing the salesman didn't help either... Image
3/ ... and wishful thinking: they're fighting like rats in a sack because they have competing solutions to existential issues .... Image

One of the joys of not being economics editor of Newsnight anymore is... being able to state when the Institute for Fiscal Studies is talking out of its derriere. Today they've had a go at Labour's plan to offer statutory sick pay to the lowest-paid workers 1/... ifs.org.uk/articles/labou…
2/ At present there's a lower limit on SSP: you have to be earning more than £123 a week to get it. That leaves 1.1 million workers without access, two thirds of them women...plus you don't get SSP for the first three days of absence... .tuc.org.uk/blogs/scrappin…
3/ Labour wants to scrap the lower limit and start SSP from day one. But, says the IFS, that will likely be passed through into lower wages. According to models based on American data, all attempts to raise the statutory benefits of workers lead to wage cuts... labour.org.uk/wp-content/upl…

In June 2021 the Royal Navy destroyer HMS Defender sailed past Russian-occupied Crimea, triggering the Russian navy to fire shots over its bow. Does Nigel Farage think our Navy "provoked this war"? 1/ I ask because he wants to be prime minister...🧵 Image
2/ He says NATO and the EU "provoked this war" by expanding Eastwards... that's a pure repetition of the lie peddled by pro-Trump fascists and pro-Putin tankies... but let's explore the reality: before 2022 NATO ruled out Ukrainian membership... Image
3/ So Farage can only mean - as the tankies do - that we were wrong to allow Poland, the Baltics, Romania etc into NATO. Now who else argues that? Vladimir Putin, in his infamous December 2021 Draft Treaty, demanding demilitarisation and neutrality for Eastern Europe... Image

Sunak's strategy was to squeeze Reform by pandering to racism. It's ended up with crossover: Reform emerging as a protest vote option for some conservative voters who could never vote Lab/Libdem ... and like Brexit it's driven by loathing of immigration 1/... Big consequences ... Image
2/ Reform surge could, if the Sunak fails to stop it, reduce Tories to double figures while putting a handful of Reform MPs in Parliament - a voice for outright Islamophobia and pro-Putin foreign policy... And then the fun begins: a multi-year project to elect a far right govt in Britain...Image
3/ There is a strong case for tactical voting in Clacton... and in all seats identified by @hopenothate as potential wins for Reform: in most cases, inc Clacton, that means voting Labour... but ...
