If anyone doubts the fate of those about to be arrested, I represented clients during the 2011 London riots. The CJS was brutal. Bail refused prior to court. People remanded in custody however minor their involvement pending trial at the Crown Court for heavier sentencing. 1/
The police told me no one was getting bail that night. I asked the duty inspector how was it that between leaving my car and arriving at the custody the presumption of bail under the bail act had been suspended? Not true I was told but no one got bail that night. All RIC 2/
In the riot courts, there was a judicial bloodbath the next day. Duty solicitors overwhelmed huge delays and ultimately bail refused whilst many were sent to the Crown Court. And who was in charge of the CPS? Keir Starmer. Expect more of the same over the next few days. 3/
I this message in the thread to all clunk heads who think it would be fun to join a far right riot because you can expect your lives to be turned upside down as civil Society at times can react with a savageness that matches your own in order to protect the wider community. 4/
You will be entitled to legal representation but even the best lawyers will struggle to save you from a judicial system geared up to send you a message. If you riot/ break the law expect ruthless retribution. I merely state this as part of my past experience not as judgment 5/
I fought very hard with all the skills of many years in the legal profession but the tide of retribution flowing through the Legal system the last time this happened was overwhelming. I felt sorry for a few clients caught up with it who were more stupid than wicked. 5/
Some were not the main key offenders, but were on the periphery simply and wrongly looting shops where others had smashed the glass. Sam had no prior convictions. All were reminded in custody. So don’t get caught up in this, stay home & don’t ruin your lives. Re-evaluate. Ends

It is rare for me to find an article in the press that so accurately depicts the abysmal shortcomings of British criminal justice as this piece from @soniasodha 1/

The terrible power of the state to ruin lives was exposed by the case of Andrew Malkinson theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
The article sums up what almost all defence lawyers have known for years. The whole CJS is stacked against the defence. From the erosion of the presumption of innocence brought in by bad character rules, the continued egregious prosecution failure of evidence disclosure 2/
- which I personally campaigned upon about during my time with the CLSA. The shocking failure to provide an equal playing field by underfunding legal aid and its scope. The pro prosecution attitude of many (not all) Judges, JP’s and the court of appeal is well known to us all.3/

‘In all these north European countries, which once looked on the British as special partners and friends inside the European Union, Britain is now barely mentioned, except as the object of pity, ridicule and contempt.’

Timothy Garton Ash theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
I absolutely understand, labours caution over alienating supporters of Brexit, given the overriding necessity of liberating this country from a corrupt incompetent Tory government. But its caution will result in the next labour government being hamstrung in what it can achieve 2/
The standards of public debate now debased & fallen so low since the Brexit referendum that even experts some still regard not as authoritative but as representatives of the so-called remainer elite. It’s nonsense, but an Ideological right wing press will still argue it. So 3/

As 2023 unfolds, the gap between Brexit’s delusions and our everyday reality will become increasingly inescapable. The Tories’ internal strife and poll woes will go on, but Labour will also be confronted with questions it will no longer be able to avoid.

theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
And that’s the point. It is useless for labour supporters (I intend to vote labour) to call upon remainers to stop putting pressure on Starmer over his unrealistic approach to Brexit. It will be at the heart of continued economic failure for years to come unless addressed. 2/
I will celebrate the end of the Tory regime - after all they - with some help from Corbyn - are largely responsible for Brexit which is the greatest act of self harm since Chamberlain’s appeasement was supported by the public in the 30’s until they later woke up to it’s folly 3/

1/ This is an interesting article by @danielboffey today

👇

Collapsing public support suggests Brexit is anything but done theguardian.com/politics/2022/…
2/ To quote:-

‘But recent polling suggests support for Brexit in the UK has collapsed -

But most worrying of all for those who are protective of Johnson’s Brexit legacy is the changing face of public opinion.’

And -
3/ ‘The latest YouGov poll has found that every region of the UK now believes Brexit was an error, with 55% of those questioned believing that Brexit has gone badly compared with 33% who say it has gone well.’

So can anybody explain at this moment of collapse in support -

I am sorry if this seems like a distraction from the main drama. But Johnson confirmed to Parliament’s liaison committee that he met an ex KGB colonel without officials present and without notifying this meeting through official channels. This is normally a sackable offence. 1/
When Priti Patel did something similar she was forced to resign. These related to unauthorised meetings in Israel. Ministers of the crown cannot go off on frolics of their own with representatives of foreign intelligence services. see report below 👇

amp.theguardian.com/politics/2017/…
2/
But of course there is no prime minister able to sack Johnson (after his admission to the liaison committee that he met an ex-KGB colonel alone in a foreign country) as Johnson would have to sack himself and we can imagine how likely that is!
Nevertheless this must pursued 3/

@neill_bob in full cross examination mode of Johnson. “So the allegation of sexual impropriety didn’t stick in your mind then? It’s not common for a minister of the crown to be accused of sexual impropriety is it? -

Ans. waffle and more waffle.

A court would not be convinced.
Despite everything the prime minister resembles ‘the stag at bay’ and it is unpopular to say this but I have some sympathy for him at this moment.I will lay down and rest until I get over it.
@bernardjenkin asks PM why issues of integrity have arisen under his watch. Johnson again waffles but why have the Tories taken so long to realise his integrity deficit?

Too little and too late
