Riots in more than half a dozen British cities and towns in a few days, aimed at a specific religious/ethnic minority, with deadly violence intended & performed.

These are attempted modern pogroms, and we should identify them as such.

History is clear and we should be too. 🧵
If this violence were aimed at Jewish communities, we would have little reticence at calling it an attempt at pogroms. Because, unfortunately, we had such attempts multiple times in living memory, and we recognise it, correctly. When it comes to Muslims, we don't.
But the reality is, we have been building up to this for years & decades. We saw the signs building in plain sight, when far-right propaganda was made 'respectable' & passed the 'dinner table test' more than a decade ago. When our mainstream political parties saw fit to use it.
Our media regularly engaged in rolling out anti-Muslim bigotry, because it knew it got views and social media traffic, and spoke to the worst of what it means to be British. But make no mistake; they spoke to something very real, which must be confronted, instead of appeased.
We have to take Islamophobia as seriously as we take Antisemitism. Enough is enough. The sickness is there and it must be named as such - but we still exist in a country where just the *word* Islamophobia is somehow controversial, wholly understand false claims. Shameful.

Biden's briefing on the reported proposal that the Israelis have apparently put forward. Many of the proposed elements, however, fly in the face of many public statements from Israeli ministers and officials over the last few weeks and months. 🧵
This proposal suggests that Israel will go into a new round of negotiations that promise a complete and total end to the war. Israeli officials have made it clear, however, numerous times, that they will not end the war without a complete destruction of Hamas military means.
Biden is clearly making his case not to the American people, but to Israelis. Presumably so they can put pressure on their own politicians; but many in the cabinet rejected far more modest elements than what this deal (based on what Biden has announced) has.

On Gaza policy in much of the West, logic isn't defining policy. Older culture wars are prescribing positions, especially on the rightwing of the spectrum, to the exclusion of logic.
To put it bluntly: many are shouting at ears that are purposely deaf. The reason is ugly.🧵
This is not comfortable for many of us in Western policy circles to admit, because we like to think we and the mainstream of our arena are above communalism and identity politics. Indeed, we associate such things with immature and underdeveloped understandings of citizenship.
But one must be blind to not see the differentiation being made between casualties in Israel & Ukraine, and civilian casualties in Gaza. 2-3 times Pal civilians killed as compared to Ukrainians; 15-20 times as Israelis. But we still have no consensus on a ceasefire in Gaza.

This focus on refusing a two-state solution may well give way to this notion of a 'type' of 'two-state solution', much as what Biden indicated. That's entirely possible, in the abstract. But it is dubious it will have the powers of genuine statehood. 🧵 cnbc.com/2024/01/20/bid…
Biden is right in that there are UN members that exist that don't have standing armies; that's true. But those share certain characteristics that don't apply to the Palestine-Israel conflict. Most poignantly; usually, another state has agreed to defend them against aggression.
For example; Andorra has no standing army, but has defence pacts with Spain and France. Micronesia is under the responsibility of the US for defence. Nauru depends on Australia for the same. There's around a dozen or so countries that have such arrangements.

Rather than focus on plans for Israel's defence, worthwhile considering what losing the case may entail for Israeli policies going forward. The Israelis are aware they have almost completely lost international public opinion, and there are dangerous signs as to its next steps. 🧵
On Gaza, the Israelis have shown that irrespective of international public opinion and outrage, they will continue as 'they see fit' - in quotes, because much policy in this regard is also about Netanyahu trying to hold his coalition together and stay out of jail.
So while these far-right ministers talked about 'security zones' in Gaza and 'voluntary migration' of Palestinians, the toleration of the discourse also meant its normalisation. And that means we ought to take it seriously as a policy option whenever they do say such things.

On Hizbollah & escalation following Israel's strike on Beirut, necessary to get a few framing issues right first:
1. Hizbollah, while closely aligned with Tehran, doesn't just take marching orders from Iran (unlike some Iraqi militias, for example); it has its own calculations.
2. Hizbollah has been careful (and subjected to criticism as a result) not to embroil Lebanon in a new wider conflict with Israel that it knows will mean huge damage to Lebanon. The Lebanese public doesn't want it; nor does Hizbollah's leadership. Nasrallah's made that clear.
3. At the same time, Hizbollah is now under severe pressure. Arouri was one of the closest Hamas leaders to Hizbollah & Tehran; and he was assassinated in Beirut, in the heart of Lebanese territory. For Hizbollah not to at least give the impression of responding isn't an option.

Once upon a time, I was deputy convenor of the UK government's working group on tackling radicalisation & extremism. When I saw the initial report last week, it also struck me as utterly fanciful to imagine we could broaden the definition of 'extremism' in this way. But.. #Thread
First, it wouldn't be the first time we had a government attempt to draw up 'bad law'; law that is unworkable and utterly nonsensical; but which nevertheless achieves a political purpose. It would be a bad idea; and the Lords would probably manage to ameliorate; but still.
More than that, there's a broader issue here. @MishalHusain correctly focuses on the legislation part here. But simply the bringing up of this notion that it could be legislation by HMG achieves another purpose; it systematically degrades our public conversation around extremism.
