India just lost its best friend in Asia

Sheikh Hasina's fall in Bangladesh will a big worry for India

Here's why🧵 Image
So let's recap

Sheikh Hasina has just resigned as Prime Minister of Bangladesh

She's been in office continuously since 2009

But she has been forced from office after massive national protests

These protests were about Bangladesh's national reservation policy
Under this policy, reservations were granted for descendants of 1971 war veterans

This was the war which established Bangladesh's independence

However, this quota was deeply unpopular among students

They said it unfairly rewarded supporters of the Awami League
However, the protests were badly mishandled by Sheikh Hasina's govt

Wings of her Awami League party & security forces cracked down harshly

Large numbers of protesters will killed by security forces in Bangladesh

Hasina also suspended internet services to crush protests
This inflamed popular anger against the Hasina govt

Unhappiness with Hasina has been growing over the last few years

Unemployment is high and the country's economy has struggled

Hasina is seen as authoritarian and her party was widely believed to have rigged the 2024 elections
All of this came together in an explosion of anger against Hasina

As protests grew, her govt responded harshly

Just on Sunday, over 90 people were killed in the protests

But it was clear her government could no longer survive in the face of public anger
Hasina has resigned and the Bangladesh Army will be forming an interim govt

The Army Chief has called for calm and stability

Sources indicate that Hasina is leaving Bangladesh and headed to India

But Hasina's fall is a major concern for India
Hasina has been India's closest geopolitical partner

From economics to counter-terrorism, Hasina has been comfortable working with India in a way few other Bangladeshi leaders have

India also trusts her

Hasina's Awami League is broadly considered pro-India
India has invested a great deal in Hasina

The two countries are working on ambitious connectivity (rail, road, energy) projects to link their economies

Contentious problems over territory and water-sharing were also solved by India and Hasina
Throughout Hasina's political troubles in 2024, India has been seen as pro-Hasina

It pushed America to reduce pressure on Hasina's govt over democracy and human rights concerns

India has also put very little pressure on Hasina despite her growing authoritarianism
Aside from losing its closest partner, India will also be worried about who comes next

The country's other most powerful party is the Bangladesh Nationalist Party

India has had a troubled relationship with the BNP in the past
The BNP was seen as unhelpful to India's security as it refused to track down on militant groups like ULFA

The BNP has also relied on closer ties with Pakistan and China and can be suspicious of India

It has also allied with Islamist groups in the past, which India opposes
If the BNP comes to power, a lot of India's ambitious economic projects could grind to a halt

It could also tilt to China given its historic distrust of India

India's backing of Hasina has also earned it some anger and unpopularity among the country's opposition
With the Army now in control, India will have to see how the situation unfolds

There could be a period of instability as student groups who led the protests have rejected military rule

India almost invaded Bangladesh once

It had one goal: save Sheikh Hasina

🧵 Image
This story begins in 2009

That year, Bangladesh was in a tense place

After years of military rule, democratic elections brought former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina back into power

But her grip on the country as well as Bangladesh's powerful military was weak
In February 2009 - months after Hasina's govt took power - a violent rebellion erupted

Hundreds of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) personnel staged a mutiny against their officers in the heart of Dhaka

The BDR was a paramilitary force responsible for protecting the country's borders

India's PM sold secrets to America for $20,000

He was accused of being a CIA agent

This is the craziest scandal you've never heard about

🧵 Image
On June 3, 1983, Indians woke up to a wild headline

India's former Prime Minister Morarji Desai was accused of being an asset for America's Central Intelligence Agency

The accusation was made by world-famous American investigative journalist Seymour Hersh Image
Hersh had made his name by exposing U.S military atrocities in Vietnam

In 1983, he released a new book on President Richard Nixon and his top diplomat Henry Kissinger

Hersh claimed that America had an informant inside the Indian Cabinet before the 1971 India-Pakistan war

Israel's Mossad is back in the global spotlight

It is being linked to the killing of Hamas Chief Haniyeh in Iran

BUT, Mossad and India's RAW have been secret partners for decades

🧵 Image
Israel's intelligence agencies have established a strong reputation over several decades

Mossad is possibly the most famous of them

Founded in 1949, it has acquired a reputation for daring covert operations abroad

Mossad also has an old relationship with India
For years after India's independence, it did not formally recognise Israel

This meant there were few official links between the two countries

But in 1968, PM Indira Gandhi created a new foreign intelligence agency

This was RAW: the Research and Analysis Wing

India ran a secret operation to destabilise China

It funded rebels in Tibet and spied on China's nuclear program

India had a secret ally in this fight: America's CIA

🧵on the India-CIA story Image
For decades, America's Central Intelligence Agency was hated in India

Indians believed the CIA was controlling the country by influencing elections & buying politicians

But before that, the CIA was a partner in India's fight against Communist China

Here's how that story began
In 1947, India's intelligence agencies were a mess

The Intelligence Bureau - India's top agency at the time - had little infra or manpower after the British left

In order to rebuild, India turned to the British and America for help

At the time, India faced serious challenges

Pakistan's spies once got deep inside the Indian Army

100 soldiers were suspected of being Pakistani agents

India then launched a major operation to catch them

🧵on the Samba spy case Image
The Samba spy scandal began in 1979

That year, over 50 Indian Army soldiers were suddenly arrested without explanation

Then the news broke: they were accused of being Pakistani agents

Almost all of them served with the 168 Infantry Brigade in Jammu's Samba
India was shocked by this

If the allegations were true, Pakistan had succeeded in infiltrating India's military

Dozens of soldiers confessed to spying for PAK and were jailed

But soon, India realised that the cases against them may have been fake

And the Samba scandal began
