A Brief History of Nobody Dresses Well Anymore

🧵
2022 "Attitudes have changed," she said, a bit wistfully. "People don't dress up much anymore. --Lincoln Journal Star, 12 September 2022
2015 "People don't dress well anymore. They don't even dress up to go to work. On the tube I see a lot of black clothes all the time," she explained. "I have black clothing too but I like to wear colours, particularly purples, mauves and pinks and other bright colours. "In my day when you went to London for the day you always wore gloves, a hat and smart shoes. It was unthinkable to wear trainers. I don't like it. Things like trips to the theatre are a chance to dress up." --The Argus, 19 November 2015
2000 Dressing up just isn't very big anymore Changing ways: Everybody seems to be going casual --The Telegraph-Herald, 22 August 2000
1995 NBA superscout Marty Blake was once general manager of the St. Louis Hawks. How did he compare the old Kiel to the new one? "People don't dress as well as they used to," Blake told Bernie Miklasz of the Post-Dispatch. "And there still isn't enough parking." --St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 6 January 1995
1982 No doubt there are just as many poor people on the streets today as there were then, but they are not quite so obviously in the want. One reason for this, of course, is that so many people today dress poorly. It's the style. The most prosperous people in town wear blue jeans or overalls. --The Plain Dealer, 15 June 1982
1973 One thing he's learned over the years is that people aren't as dressy as they once were. "People don't dress up anymore. They go casual now. "As a matter of fact there's a shortage of people going to church. This is no good. People should go to church more often. That's the trouble with the kids these days." --Star-Gazette, 14 March 1973
1972 "These days, you wear fewer petticoats, which used to take up a lot of room. But old people used to look nicer when I was younger. They looked stately in their long black dresses and shawls. --Reading Evening Post, 22 August 1972
1965 "It's a shame," she says. "The teen-age girls and young women today dress so poorly -- the surfing and Whiskey-a-Go-Go set really have abominable taste. And there is a sameness to their clothes that is pitiful." --The Herald, 23 January 1965
1960 "People don't dress as well as they used to," Vermeers said. "Leisure-time clothes and wash-and-wear fabrics have cut into the cleaners." With his sharply creased suits and near bow ties, he sets an example of the typical cleaners' customer. Also on the way, he said, are coin-operated dry cleaning machines. --The Spokesman-Review, 27 March 1960
1955 A Marion Marlow laments "When I was a kid in St. Louis I had three burning ambitions -- to wear high-heeled shoes, to have enough money to buy all the chocolate ice cream I wanted, and to be old enough to wear evening gowns. Now that I'm old enough, nobody dresses up anymore, I'm on a diet and I'm too tall for high heels! That's life!" --Daily News, 27 December 1955
1954 ... The CIO Textile Workers' Union is blaming television for the decline in the clothing industry. The Union claims people don't dress up anymore, but loll around the house watching television, instead... --York Daily Record, 18 May 1954
1950 BLAMED FOR SLOPPY MEN Binghamton, N.Y. (AP) -- Michael Santalucia, the last of Binghamton's custom hatmakers, claims the automobile has encouraged sartorial sloppiness. "Men stopped dressing up because of the auto," Santalucia says. "They got sloppy. They don't have to look nice any more. They are never on the street. They are always hidden in cars." --The Plain Speaker, 28 April 1950
1948 People Dress Poorly. As for clothing, the English male, who used to be the best-dressed in the world, now is very poorly dressed. Many men have not bought a new suit in five years. Women are still wearing the "old look" for the most part. New clothes can be had only for ration points and a sales tax of 66 2-3 per cent is tacked onto the price. --The State, 2 September 1948
1938 "England seems rapidly to have lost dignity," says the veteran. "While I would not suggest a return to the formal manners and customs of the Victorians, I deplore London's present lack of poise. "The young men of all classes in England today dress sloppily. There is no other word for it. And the young women are not much better. Because they want to be treated as equals by the young men of today, they expect none of the little politeness which were a featuer of my young days." --The Mail, 2 September 1948
1937 FORGOTTEN HOW TO DRESS Lament of Oxford University Magazine Where are the wild-eyed tousled-haired fantastically clad undergraduates of popular fancy? "The Isis," Oxford University magazine, is lamenting their non-existence. --Grimsby Evening Telegraph, 4 February 1937
1923 GIRLS, DON'T TRY TO FOOL MEN FOLKS! You Can't Make a Hit With 'Em Dressing As You Wish BY SENORITA SAN DIEGO When the flapper came into prominence just after the war, girls stopped dressing up for any one else -- even man. They cut their hair short, avoided long skirts, lowered their heels and took to puffing cigarets more strenuously, only to suit their own particular whims. But, girls, if you still include yourselves in this class, you're on the wrong track. You'll never make a hit with man -- let alone other women -- if you continue picking your wearing apparel just to suit yourselv...

A Brief History of Let’s Bring Back The Good Old Days

🧵
2023 Bring back the good old days of the 1970s and 1980s. It would be great to have some of the old shops back. --The Northern Echo, 9 Mar 2023
2014 We need to bring back good ol' days Editor: Once upon a time and not that long ago, unemployment was around 5 percent. The work week for most Americans was at least 40 hours. Gas was under $2 a gallon. Government assistance wasn't needed so much for a high percentage of American families to survivie on. What is needed is real honestly and a workable plan that can bring some fo the good old days back again. The new strategy must come from the top. Maybe, just try a few free-market economic ideas; they worked in the past. Now it's the radical Saul Alinsky vs. economist Milton Friedman's. --Po...

A Brief History of Kids Today Need More Discipline

🧵
2016 Kids need more discipline When I was a teenager, we'd call neighbors, friends, etc., and ask them if they had Prince Albert in a can (meaning pipe tobacco). If they said yes, we'd say, "let him out." These days, teens call schools, threatening to shoot students, policemen, bystanders, etc. This makes me think about the lack of discipline existing anymore in both homes and schools. In the 1940s when I was a teenager, if I transgressed, I got a spanking and maybe a week or two of no dating or fun things. Nowadays what discipline, if any, is meted out to children when they do wrong? ...
2010 From "Cutgovtspending:" "Gone is the tough assistant principal who dishes out discipline." Are you kidding me? These kids need more discipline, not less. This is one of the major problems with today's kids. There is no accountability for their actions. --Lansing State Journal, 13 Aug 2010

Nobody wants to work The economic situation in England is bad, he said, primarily on account of the practice instituted some time ago of issuing doles. "Nobody wants to work. A List of Predictions Made in 1925 About 2025

🧵
Women will dress logically in one-piece hygienic suits WIRELESS AGE IN YEAR 2025 IS PREDICTED London. A fantastic picture of a world run by wireless in the year 2025 A.D. is painted by Professor A.M. Low, noted educator, who predicts that light will be broadcast by wireless, all means of locomotion will be controlled by wireless, and women will at last dress logically in a one-piece hygienic suit, warmed by wireless. --The Tampa Times, 3 Sep 1925
