The EU lists 8 areas where UK falls short (wrongly called 'demands' by the FT) which include:
- No automatic 'settled status' of EU residents in UK and withholding rights to EU residents
- No proper implementation of the trade border in the Irish sea, such as...
(2/x)
..no proper certification, no enough vet to reject non compliant goods, no data system for parcels, etc.
Two matters stand out here:
1) It is beyond shamefull that the UK still has not fully implemented the agreements..
(3/x)
..the issues with respect to EU citizens are from 2020, so that is 4 years!.
Note that these 'old cases' of 2020 are having real consequences to this day: not having the right status in 2020 means problems all the way to now.
(4/x)
2) (second thing that is remarkable):
There is near complete silence on this in UK. No journalist, no trade expert - in short: nobody - seems to care that UK is already for year flaunting its obligations.
There are regular articles about what the UK could gain..
(5/x)
..from a better relations. The 'unicorns' are already flying ('Jersey' model??), the 'cakes' are ready to be eaten ('sector-by-sector involvement in the SM, UK taking part in EU defense programmes), but no one...
(6/x)
...seems to care that UK regards is treaty obligations as less than mere suggestions
There are even those that want a negotiation with EU on UK fulfulling its treaty obligation (really). Its unclear if they then want a second negotiation when UK again does not as agreed
(7/x)
..It would be wonderful if journalists in UK would do some work, such as:
- Checking if UK is indeed not fulfulling its treaty obligation
- Checking out why that is the case
- Confronting ministers and ask if they think UK should be trustworthy
(8/x)
..UK says it wants to get closer to Europe.
However, if UK shows such disdain for existing agreements, and frankly for Europe, a question is how genuine the UK overtures are
If its still old, unreliable, cherry-picking UK, its better that relations stay in the freezer

@nialloconghaile I have doubts about UK entering EFTA/EEA, mainly because UK is 'not a team player':
- UK left EU because it could not dominate, it refused to cooperate with others, and it still does.
- UK to this day tries to impose its will on Ireland, and can barely conceal that it...
(1/x)
@nialloconghaile ..does not accept the sovereignity of Ireland.
- UK is hardly interested in Europe, if it cannot dominate, and its foreign policy basically ends with 'stop the boats'
- Even with the new European Political community (EPC), UK - again - tries to hijack the agenda, and...

@nialloconghaile ...make it all about 'stop the boats'
It would thus be bad - like sheer folly - to let UK in EFTA: In no time, UK would seek to dominate the others, and try to dominate them, sololy pursuing UK interests.
A 'trial period' won't help, because UK cannot help itself..
