Everyone talks about legendary writers like:

Hemingway, Stephen King, or Henry David Thoreau.

But there is a British author who redefined the game forever.

Here’s the secret technique J. K. Rowling used to write one of the best-selling book series of all time: Image
At 32, J.K. Rowling was a single mom on welfare, struggling to make ends meet.

One day, while stuck on a delayed train, the character Harry Potter came to her fully formed.

And she spent the next 5 years meticulously planning the 7-book series before writing a single word. Image
Today, Harry Potter is the best-selling book series of all time (closely followed by Goosebumps).

Here's a breakdown of the 10-column outline method she used to create Harry Potter: Image
Rowling's 10-column outline was divided into 2 key areas:

1. Progress & Progression (Time & Chapters)
2. Plot & Characters (Main Plot, Subplots, Characters)

By focusing tightly on all these interconnected elements, she kept readers engaged and the story moving forward. Image
Each chapter in the series features 3+ interwoven subplots:

• The central mystery (e.g. The Chamber of Secrets)
• Character development (e.g. Ron's insecurities)
• Hogwarts life (e.g. Quidditch matches)

These subplots add depth to each chapter. Image
In Order of the Phoenix, Rowling streamlined her story:

• 1 main plot (The Prophecy & Voldemort's return)
• 5 subplots (Umbridge, Dumbledore's Army, etc.)
• Under 10 key characters

To make sure she never missed a key plot point, Rowling did a detailed outline:
To add more complexity, Rowling's narrative over the 7 books spans 3 generations:

1. Harry, Ron, & Hermione
2. James, Lily, & the Marauders
3. Dumbledore & Voldemort's origins

Each layer builds on the others, creating a dense wizarding world that feels real to the reader: Image
Rowling's consistent structure provided a roadmap and built anticipation for the series' climactic finale.

• 1 school year at Hogwarts
• 1 central mystery to solve
• 5 subplots intertwine with the main story

It doesn’t mean there weren’t plot holes, though. Check this out:
That's it!

Rowling's 10-column outline can be any writer's Marauder's Map:

1. Time (When does the story take place?)
2. Chapter (How will you structure your tale?)
3. Plot (What's the main narrative throughline?)
4. Subplots (How will you add complexity?)
5. Characters (Who will drive your story?)
Every storyteller should learn from Rowling's approach:

• Craft a compelling premise
• Develop a detailed outline
• Interweave subplots to add depth
• Create layered generational stories
• Narrow the focus to intensify drama Image
That's it!

I bet my life savings Christopher Nolan is the last great director of this century.

Not because of Inception, Interstellar, or Oppenheimer.

But because he found a secret method to irresistible storytelling:🧵 Image
Nolan uses the Plot Map Technique to visualize his storyline.

He doesn’t want “constraints” to hold him back when writing the story.

So he uses this technique to help his production team visualize & then create it on screen.

Here he explains how he comes up with his ideas:
Let's take Inception as an example.

One of the most well-crafted movies of the last 50 years.

The intricate plot is a journey around dreams within dreams, jumping between layers of reality.

When asked about his inspiration — Nolan's answer shocked everyone:

I’ve made $250,000+ from self-publishing.

But it sometimes makes sense to take the traditional publishing path.

Here are 7 questions every writer should ask themselves before trying to land a book deal: Image
Q1: Do you want Status or Money?

Most traditional book deals are horrible financially for authors. The reason they want them isn't really money—it's status.

"A publisher chose me!"

99% of the time, you will make more $$$ with self-publishing (but get zero status).

Here's why:
Q2: Do you meet 1 of The 5 Criteria to land a big book deal?

1. You're a celebrity.
2. You're a professional journalist.
3. You have a giant online audience.
4. You have "irreplaceable knowledge."
5. You're a graduate of a renowned creative writing program.

The KING of modern comedy:

Jerry Seinfeld.

He's received 1 Emmy, 3 Grammy nominations, & even a Guinness World Record.

10 lessons I learned from him: Image
1/ Get started and embrace the unexpected.

In the beginning, Seinfeld had no idea if he was funny or not.

He had zero awareness of his ability as a comedian.

His first big laugh shocked him:
2/ Pursue your passion relentlessly.

"Once I knew I had some ability, I did not care if my life was going to be an absolutely minimal hand-to-mouth existence of just barely getting by."

When you find your passion, commit fully.

Success follows those with real dedication:

The quickest way to 10x your writing:

Formatting.

Here's my 4-step formatting framework to make your writing easier to skim, read, and share (🧵):
Step 1: Start every section with a single-sentence opener.

When you open each area of your work with a single sentence, you:

• Keep readers interested
• Make things easier to read
• Subconsciously encourage them to continue

Here are the 6 most effective openers: Image
Step 2: Use the 1/3/1 writing rhythm.

You can also use:

• 1/4/1
• 1/5/1
• 1/2/5/2/1
• Etc.

The key to injecting skimmability into your writing is alternating the length of sentences and sections.

Here's some more on the 1/3/1 rhythm 👇

I've generated $10,000,000+ with my writing.

But most people think making a living as a writer is hard.

Here are the 5 steps to make your first $1 million as a writer (that you can start today): Image
For context, I have:

• Sold tens of thousands of copies of my books
• Built multiple 6-figure writing businesses
• Built two 7-figure writing businesses
• Earned $150,000+ writing for Inc Magazine
• Earned $250,000+ from Medium's Partner Program

Now let's talk money:
Step 1: Give 99% away for free.

Write for free.

Educate for free.

Everything you know about a topic? Give it away for free.

Writers always want to "skip" to the money part.

Because if you can't get people to read your FREE work, you'll never get them to buy your paid work.

I can write a 60,000-word book in 30 days.

Here's the 7-step system I use every time:

(This works even if you've never written a book before): Image
Disclaimer:

This only works for content where you're already the expert/speaking from personal experience.

If you're researching a NEW topic/something you know nothing about, then it will take you longer.

But once you HAVE the information, you can write fast.

Here's how👇
Step 1: Name The House

A great book is not a bunch of words.

A great book is an idea, presented coherently, in a way that walks the reader's thinking FROM where they currently are TO somewhere new & different.

Before you write a single word, where are you taking the reader?
