On August 12, 2024, Israeli forces abducted journalist & activist Ayman Gharib. His alleged crime was “incitement on social media” but his posts document Israeli military & settler violence. I guess he’s inciting people to reject Israeli apartheid?
On 26 Dec. 2023, Israeli forces abducted the politician & scholar Khalida Jarrar, 61. They just renewed her "administrative detention" again. She is currently being held in solitary confinement. She has been held in prison w/out charge on & off for years. middleeastmonitor.com/20240821-israe…
These are 6 out of ~3,615 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons & dungeons, known as "administrative detainees." They have not committed a crime, they are not told why they are abducted & their imprisonment is renewable forever. They are hostages & should be called hostages.
Israel doesn't care if they are Muslim or Christian, young or old, men or women, whether they protest w/a camera, voice or pen. Palestinians who non-violently resist occupation, apartheid & genocide face abduction, indefinite imprisonment, torture & possibly death.

15 Israeli (former) leaders call it Apartheid. A 🧵
For decades, Israeli political & military leaders have wondered, will Israel become an apartheid state? Then, once their tenure in office ends, and their title is former something, they find the courage to say, alas, Israel has become an apartheid state!
In 1967, the former PM David Ben-Gurion said shortly after the conquest of Gaza & the West Bank that Israel “better rid itself of the territories and their Arab population as soon as possible…if it did not Israel would soon become an apartheid state.” theintercept.com/2017/03/22/top…
A brief history of ceasefire talks between Hamas & Israel. A 🧵
On 19 June 2008, Israel & Hamas agreed to a truce:
Hamas & other militant groups agreed to stop firing rockets at Israel if Israel agreed to halt air strikes & other attacks & ease its blockade of Gaza. theguardian.com/world/2008/jun…
From 19 June 2008 until 4 Nov. 2008, Hamas fired 0 rockets & 0 mortar shells at Israel & restrained other Palestinian groups, according to Israeli spokesman Mark Regev (on 9 Jan 2009). Still, Israel did NOT ease the blockade. books.google.com.mx/books?id=-YX45…
Israel doesn't have a constitution. Instead it has 14 basic laws whose purpose is to establish "the values of the State of Israel as a Jewish & democratic state.”
So Israel's purpose is to be both Jewish & democratic. But what if the majority becomes non-Jewish? A very short 🧵
This fear drives public opinion in Israel. To cite just one example, according to the 2010 Israel Democracy Institute (@IDIisrael) poll, 53% of Israeli Jews believed the state should be entitled to encourage Palestinians Arabs to emigrate from Israel adalah.org/uploads/oldfil…
The fear is especially heightened in Jerusalem, for how could the "Jewish & democratic state" have a non-Jewish (i.e. Palestinian) majority in the capital?
Today, Hamas & Fatah agreed to form an "interim national reconciliation government" aimed at maintaining Palestinian control over Gaza once Israel ends its war on Gaza. How will the US & Israel respond?
Some lessons from history. A 🧵
On 19 Mar. 2005, 13 Palestinian groups (Fatah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, PFLP, DFLP) signed the Cairo Declaration, affirming the status of the PLO as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people. It was a step towards a peaceful resolution. haaretz.com/2005-03-18/ty-…
In response, on April 27, 2005, the US State Department published a list of "terrorist" organizations, re-affirming Hamas was a "terrorist" organization. The US could have welcomed this step towards a negotiated settlement. Instead the US rejected it. 2009-2017.state.gov/j/ct/rls/crt/4…
