I have a few EIDE VESA Local Bus cards to check out. Let's do this and talk about it in a 🧵 here! Image
So, I figured I'd do a bit of a baseline. As such, I started out with a benchmark for my DTC 2278E card. And here it is! Now, in fairness, we are loading a DOS driver for this card, which puts it into 32 bit mode. Sadly, we won't be able to do that with the other cards. Image
Image
First up, we have this QDI Vision QD6580. It has a nice presence on the Retro Web, complete with drivers and all, assuming you have the BIOS to go with it. theretroweb.com/expansioncards…Image
Image
Image
First order of business is to put in that missing standoff/screw. I think I have one around here somewhere. Ah, that's better 😂. Image
Image
Image
Unfortunately, I tried every way to Sunday to get this card to recognize IDE, and it seems to be broken. Oh well. That's a shame too, this card is actually one of the few VLB cards where the XTIDE BIOS supports them! Image
Image
Since I (foolishly) don't give up easily, I thought I would try to pop the BIOS in. I bought a SN74LS138N chip (since it is needed with the BIOS) and programmed up a Winbond W27C512 chip with XTIDE 32-bit support. Sadly, no difference. Oh well, on to the next. Image
Image
Image
Next we have this CMD CSA-6210/KX, which seems to work well enough! You can find it on the Retro Web here: theretroweb.com/expansioncards…Image
Image
Image
And next, we have this Aresys Precision AV150 V1.1, which also gets the job done. You can find it on the Retro Web here: theretroweb.com/expansioncards…Image
Image
Image
So, yea, neither of these cards we tested just now are as fast as the DTC, but they also don't have DOS drivers, so there is that too! But they are nice basic EISA VLB cards!

Anyway, that's what I have for now, thanks for following along!

Let's talk briefly about a retrobrite "gone wrong" and how I did my best to fix it, with my very limited plastic repair skills 😅. Time for a brief 🧵
Image
Image
So, I wanted to retrobright the top CD-ROM drive tray lid. Per usual with a CD-ROM drive, I tried to pop it off. Aaaand it cracked. Image
I ended up using super glue to fix it. But then I got too much glue on it, so I used some acetone to clean it off. Between the hydrogen peroxide, super glue, & acetone, something ate at the surface. Guessing it was the acetone. Zooming in on a picture I took, you can see it. Image

Let's see if we can persuade this eMachines T2341 Athlon XP 2400+ system to give us some sound in DOS and Windows 3.11... just because... well... we can 😂. This can only mean one thing: time for a 🧵
Image
Image
So, in case you missed it, a few days back, I installed Windows XP, Windows '98SE and Windows 3.11 for Workgroups on this system. However, we didn't do anything to configure the sound in DOS or WFW3.11
In a perfect world, we'd pop in an ISA sound card and call it a day. But as we can see, this PC does not have ISA slots. It has a Via VT8235 South Bridge chip, which provides support for AC'97 audio, which is a little too new for DOS in most cases.

I just wrapped an evening of testing some PCI and ISA cards on the Pentium 233 MMX. And I really got a run for my money tonight 😂. Let's talk about what was miserable and ultimately successful in a 🧵 here! Image
So, cards tested tonight included sound (both PCI and ISA), video (PCI), and SCSI controller cards (PCI). We used this nice (albeit cheddar cheese color) Philips PCA80SC 8X CD-ROM to aid in the testing. Image
Image
Image
Our first round of testing involved the Sound Blaster 128 PCI, Matrox Mystique video card, and Adaptec AHA-2930C SCSI card. In they went! And I pulled out my S3 Virge video card and Sound Blaster AWE64 (not shown here). Image

What have we here? Could it be? Yes... it's a TAPE drive. Let's talk about it in a 🧵 here!
Image
Image
So, typically a drive like this will have a 5.25 enclosure that surrounds it. Looking at the drive in this form, I had no idea what kind of drive it was other than the writing "Colorado Memory Systems" on the drive's PCB. Okay, we must solve this mystery! Image
Image
Image
Given that, I figured that installing Colorado Backup for Windows would give us a clue. This drive plugs into the floppy controller. The drive got detected, and we learn it is a HP Colorado T1000. Neat! Image

So, I've had this idea for a little while: how about installing 3 different CD-ROM drives into my 486DX2/66 VLB system? And how about having each one use a different interface type? Well that's what I have done 😂. Let's talk about it in a 🧵 here!

Image
Image
Image
First, we have a Mitsumi 2X drive, which uses the Mitsumi interface. This was the first drive installed in the system, and it attaches to a MediaMagic (OPTI chipset) sound card. I covered the installation of this drive in this post! Image
Image
Next, we have a Sony CDU-76E 4X drive. It's just an IDE drive, so installation is straight forward. I did "reverse" the IDE cable to make it connect up better (pin 1 is "backwards"). I actually tested this drive out a few weeks ago in this post! Image

Oh my, what have we here? An eMachines?!? Yep! It's a T2341 Athlon XP 2400+ system, and I just loaded three operating systems on it (well, kindof... at least 2 of the 3 are fully functional). Let's talk about it in a 🧵 here!

So, first of all: my favorite part are the stickers on the front. I love that "Now with AMD Athlon XP 2400+" sticker, slapped on there the same way you'd find a "now with 10% more" bag of chips at the grocery store! Memory has been upgraded to 1GB, and we will change out the HDD Image
Here's a look inside. And, yea, I did pull the modem, we probably won't be using it all that much TBH.
