Russia is currently bombing Kurakhove into nothingness. They are systematically bombing the entire place into dust. Dropping every weapon they have on it. Glide bombs, tactical cruise missiles, artillery, rockets. They are trying to turn it to dust, to completely erase it.
Kurakhove is the anchor to the Ukrainian defensive strategy, it links their eastern line to their southern line. You can think of two concentric circles. There is the outer circle, that is Kurakhove. And the inner circle, that is Kurakhivka. Together they form this anchor.
Between the two is a giant reservoir. Russia is attacking Kurakhivka from the north. They are moving closer and closer to it. And now they are turning Kurakhove to dust.
If you expand this outer circle, Kurakhove is one. You also had Krasnohorivka, and Heorhiivka/Maksimilianivka. Then it expands south to like katerynivka/yelyzavetivka/illinka, and then the furthest extent goes to like novoukrainka, shakhatrske, and eventually velyka novosilka.
the inner circle you had Kurakhivka/hirnyk, zhelanna pershe, halytsynivka, karlivka, zhelanne, hrodivka, and eventually up to like ocheretyne.

These two circles are how I thought of this area in my head.
if you look at the two on the map, they kinda form the letter S. but I think of it as concentric circles because their defense kinda reminded me of an onion. You had an outer shell and an inner shell. And what separated them is all of this water. There are reservoirs and rivers
But anyways, My point is that this Russian breakthrough isn't so much threatening to move eastward toward Pokrovsk (which I think would be a minimalist attack from Russia), but rather a way to wrap around and break this outer defense in the south that connects the east and south lines. This will let them get behind the southern defensive line, which is the strongest that Ukraine has, and this threatens a much larger exploitation in the future.
People ask why Russia isn't getting big breakthroughs even though they have effectively broken this defensive line: the answer is most likely exhaustion. Their infantry are largely exhausted from 24/7 combat, and their armor has taken huge casualties along the way. Plus ukraine has pretty good drone units available to counter armored assaults.
I think if, by some miracle, Ukraine got together some sort of coherent and functional defensive strategy, they could halt the Russian advance. I am not sure Russia would be able to break through a second time at this point. I think they would grind a few weeks hoping Ukraine would crumble, and if that didn't work they'd have to stop and spend a few weeks regrouping.
But this is a big if, because Ukraine seemingly hasn't been able to do this. The Russian advance towards Pokrovsk has slowed to a crawl, but I think that is because only a complete fucking idiot would attack Pokrovsk when you have the ability to capture Kurakhivka and Yelyzavetivka.
I will interpret any major russian attack on Pokrovsk as them conceding their maximalist aims of this offensive and falling back on a minimalist target.
People keep saying "the lessons learned in Kharkiv" which is a phrase that drives me crazy. But here we see "the lessons learned in Bakhmut." In that Attacking the city (bakhmut/pokrovsk) is what a COMPLETE IDIOT would do, and pushing down to capture vital strong points (dyliivka/kurakhivka) is what a big brain would do.

The Russian advance on Pokrovsk is really bad. Personally, I don’t care about Pokrovsk, I am much more worried of Russia moving south and bypassing by Kurakhove and Pokrovsk, and getting behind the Zaporizhzhia defensive line. I think this is the worst case scenario, and I think it has been Russia’s goal since mid 2022.
I do not believe the situation is caused by lack of infantry or lack of ammo or any other excuse being floated around. I believe blame rests squarely on leadership. Both civilian and military. They have shit the bed with endless mistakes, and Russia is taking advantage.
Instead of accepting blame, admitting mistakes, and working to address those mistakes, everyone is pointing fingers and blaming everyone else. This behavior is pathetic and stopping Ukraine from finding solutions. And the people amplifying these arguments are contributing to the problem.

Twitter doesn't allow me to share what I actually think about this video. They chase down a civilian and kill him. You should watch it. Especially if watching an old man die would bother you. Because you should see what the Russians are doing. Video in next tweet.
The video takes place here, in Kindiyvka. Kindiyvka and Antonivka have had over 50 civilians wounded, and at least 4 have died (maybe 5 here), over the past 3 weeks. Image

Every day Russians attack civilians in Kherson and post videos bragging about it. Here are videos from today:

Ukraine is obviously withdrawing to their prepared defensive lines around Pokrovsk. Whether those lines will hold will be seen. But it is obvious that this is what is happening. And it is the correct course of action.
The biggest threat to these defenses will be, obviously, bombs. And Ukraine still lacks the air defense to deal with those bombs, so the only realistic course of action is to go after the airfields. Which the west apparently is completely opposed to due to #escalation
Can people please stop freaking out about all of Donetsk falling this weekend, though? It is not obvious Russia has the strength to actually break through the defensive lines. Right now they are bumrushing through lightly defended areas where they outnumber the defender 10 to 1.

Where were the military experts in 2022 when the foundation of the Russian success in Avdiivka area was laid due to the civilian leadership not providing the necessary supplies to the front line units? Where were they using their platform demanding mortar ammo?
I saw them talking about Kherson 24/7 and not caring about avdiivka.
I still don't see them talking about mortar ammo to this day. Artillery ammo, maybe. Mortars? What's a mortar, apparently.
