Why Vijayawada Floods Are a Man-Made Disaster
The primary cause of flooding in Vijayawada is the overflowing of the Budameru, not a breach. (breach happened on Sep 3, not before). It's called “The Sorrow of Vijayawada.” To mitigate this, the Budameru Diversion Channel (BDC) is used to redirect the Budameru flow into the Krishna River. In this context, the blue line represents the Budameru, while the yellow line indicates the Polavaram Right Main Canal (BDC)

Budameru is dammed at Velagaleru. From here, it is supposed to flow into the Krishna River. The picture shows the gates near Velagaleru. The original plan was to prevent Budameru from entering the interior areas of Vijayawada.

If we look at the timeline, unprecedented rains occurred from August 30 to August 31, with the rain stopping by the evening of August 31. However, there was no flooding in the interior areas at that time. The flooding only occurred on the morning of September 1, about 12 hours after the rain had stopped.

The reason is simple: the Budameru gates were opened around midnight, in the early hours of September 1. Three possible reasons have been cited for this:
1. The Krishna River was flowing at maximum capacity and couldn’t accommodate the Budameru’s flow.
2. There was pressure from the NTTPS (power plant).
3. To save CBN's house from flooding (Yes Budameru diversion can effect CBN house)

I’m uncertain about the first reason, as according to Wikipedia, the Polavaram canal joins the Krishna River at 33 meters above sea level (MSL). Even if the Krishna is flowing at maximum capacity, this should be higher than the river level, though this is subject to correction. As for the second & third reasons, we may never know, as the current government lacks transparency. Additionally, CBN has claimed that there are no gates for Budameru.

Whatever the reason, when the decision was made to open the gates at midnight, there was more than enough time to evacuate people from the affected areas. It’s shocking to think why no evacuation took place. It was obvious that the Budameru would overflow, as it can only accommodate < 10,000 cusecs at best, but that day it was flowing at > 30,000 cusecs. Common sense dictates that it would inevitably overflow

The most shocking part is Chandrababu’s press conference, where he claimed that Budameru has no gates and dismissed the issue as mere controversy. It’s surprising that a ruling Chief Minister with 15 years of experience wouldn’t know this. And there was no breach, it's an overflow during Aug 31 and Sep 1 (subject to correction)
