It really is jarring to read Trump's comments as he actually delivers them vs. how they're eventually cleaned up in mainstream news outlets.
This was the topic of my @newrepublic piece from yesterday newrepublic.com/article/185530…
@newrepublic For real, be on the lookout for how that statement gets covered in the press. It'll either be completely ignored or framed like "Trump plans to work with Rubio and Ivanka on reducing child care costs" instead of "Trump rambles incoherently"
I find it really funny that Trump supporters will falsely accuse Kamala Harris of "not being able to put together a complete sentence." Meanwhile, their guy is just... that. It's such an obvious case of projection.
Trump's actual, insane answer vs. how NYT cleaned it up for him:

Mainstream media outlets just can't help themselves. It's not enough to just say the answer was "jumbled." You have to make clear that what he said was completely incoherent.
Reality vs. how the media frames it:

And this is NYT's key takeaway from the event Image

"If someone has a Y chromosome, they're a man!!!"

My dudes, if you karyotype tested every female athlete currently competing at the Olympics, you'd surprise a fair number of them with news they were "men" (by your definition).
Think about how much your world would be turned upside down if you're just going along, born a girl, raised a girl, training your whole life... and suddenly people are like, "lol, actually, you're a man." And all of this is totally news to you.
The last time they did wide-scale DNA testing of female athletes was the 1996 Olympics. They found that 8 out of 3,387 (0.2%) had a Y chromosome. Roughly 100x higher rate than the general population. theguardian.com/sport/2012/may…

Figure today's as good a day as ever to re-up this 2019 piece I wrote about how trans people get dragged into debates over intersex athletes (who aren't trans) and vice versa, fairness, etc. cjr.org/criticism/cast…
There are zero trans women competing in the Olympics this year. Now transphobes have moved on to screaming at people who were born female and raised as girls for likely having a genetic abnormality they weren't aware of. This is how it goes, I guess!
Here's the thing: if you DNA test every world class female athlete, I bet a disproportionate (compared to the general population) % have some sort of intersex trait most aren't aware of.

Like, way to go, you losers, you ran stories praising him for his speech about "unity" where he ranted about Hannibal Lecter being a real person and called Nancy Pelosi crazy.

Yeah, I'm not sure what's up with Yashar's big pivot to rage-bait over the past month, but it's been disappointing to see. A lot of those quotes are bad. At least one of them is just wildly out of context, though.
If you want to create rage bait, city council meetings are a great place to find it. There will always be a few totally unhinged people there, a few people with wacky views, a few extremists out of hundreds of speakers.
But this is a good example of the context being stripped. So, you hear this line in the clip and go, "Wow, this person is ridiculous!":
