Today, amid the Israeli military's ongoing war on Palestinians in Gaza, we commemorate the Sabra and Shatila massacre in Lebanon. 🧵
Between 16 and 18 September 1982, Lebanese Phalangist militants entered the Beirut refugee camp of Sabra and Shatila, and killed and injured hundreds of unarmed Palestinian and other civilians inside.
The camp’s residents were defenseless.
The Israeli army, who had invaded Lebanon earlier that year and had surrounded the camp did not intervene.
Dr Swee Chai Ang refused to leave the hospital where she was working inside the camp. She worked tirelessly to save the injured and protect her patients during the massacre
On her return to London, Dr Ang joined with fellow medical professionals and humanitarians to establish MAP, in order to send doctors and nurses to work in the Palestinian refugee camps and provide frontline care.
"It has been 42 years since the horrors of the Sabra and Shatila massacre, and it is outraging to see Palestinians continue to experience massacres and injustices everyday."
- Wafa Dakwar, MAP's Lebanon Director.
More than 40 years on, MAP remains committed to justice for victims of the Sabra and Shatila massacre, and we continue to support the rights to health and dignity of all Palestinians.

"This morning we woke up to news of yet another horrific and deadly Israeli military airstrike on displaced people sheltering in tents in a so-called ‘humanitarian zone’."
- Statement from MAP's Gaza Director Fikr Shalltoot

"Our medical teams and partners are exhausted and traumatised.
The Israeli military cannot be allowed to act with impunity and continue to violate international humanitarian law without consequence."

"We call on the international community to uphold its responsibility to protect Palestinians from further atrocities, including by immediately halting all arms transfers to Israel.
There can be no excuses for allowing these horrors to continue."

🚨🚨🚨 Israel's deadly attacks in Gaza’s Middle Area intensified today, with intensive airstrikes in Deir al Balah and Nuseirat refugee camp. Initial reports from healthcare sources suggested more than 125 killed and many more injured.

Emergency medical teams have been unable to respond effectively, due to a lack of fuel and spare parts for ambulances, and the scale of bombardment. Footage from Al Aqsa hospital shows many patients lying on the floor with horrific injuries, including many children.

Al Aqsa is the main hospital providing services to one million displaced people in central Gaza, and is now running on just one generator due to fuel shortages. It has been overwhelmed by casualties and lacks the equipment and staff needed to save lives.

🚨Yesterday the Israeli military raided the Kamal Adwan Hospital and took 70 medical staff to an undisclosed location.
MAP is gravely concerned for their welfare, as well as patients, staff and displaced people reportedly trapped inside without electricity, water or food.
Two mothers were killed at the hospital on Monday when the maternity department was hit.
Staff report that the hospital had been besieged by the military for several days before the army entered at noon yesterday.
Staff say that medical crews were gathered at the emergency department, where they were interrogated and humiliated by soldiers.
Six people were reportedly injured after being shot at by soldiers, including the son of Dr Hossam Abu-Safia, Head of Paediatrics at the hospital.
🚨Babies in the neonatal intensive care unit at Shifa Hospital, which MAP has supported over many years, are beginning to die from lack of oxygen. More will die soon unless the power supply is restored.
MAP’s CEO @melanie_ward responds:⬇️🧵(1/6)
“Before it was shut down this week by Israel’s assault and denial of fuel to the hospital, the NICU’s quality services were a testament to years of investment, the dedication of its staff, and the solidarity and care from people in the UK and around the world.” (2/6)
“We are deeply concerned by uncritical media reporting regarding the Israeli military’s statement that it will help move premature babies trapped at the hospital to a “safer hospital”.” (3/6)
