We are a country of deeply psychologically/emotionally wounded people who use what has evolved into a pathological political system to simultaneously exorcise…..and weaponize….childhood trauma.

Let’s unpack JD Vance/@JDVance

1/
Image
In 2019, I wrote about Donald Trump being a “pathological people pleaser”.

When Trump can’t “please” a particular person or group.....he punishes those who "reject" him....

….and then uses what is often inhumane "punishment" to curry favor from people who approve of that behavior.

(In this transaction, Trump receives positive reinforcement/narcissistic supply)

2/Image
There appears to be a similar dynamic at play with Vance, who has desperately attempted to “please” various, and often disparate, groups throughout his life….

To understand why, let’s look at Vance’s childhood/life experiences.

3/
Vance’s childhood trauma:

One of the things that stands out with Vance is the instability of relationships to, and between, parental figures.

Vance’s mom married five times, and apparently had many more “revolving-door” relationships with men that resulted in Vance claiming he had fifteen “stepdads” while growing up.

4/people.com/all-about-jd-v…Image
This revolving door dynamic resulted in Vance changing his name several times:

“However, Beverly and Hamel (third husband who adopted Vance, and whose name Vance took for a while) eventually split, causing J.D.’s name to change again.

‘One of the worst parts, honestly, was that Bob’s departure would further complicate the tangled web of last names in our family,’ he wrote. J.D. eventually took his maternal last name, Vance, once his grandparents became his caretakers.”

5/people.com/all-about-jd-v…
Vance also experienced neglect and abuse from his mother.

“His family struggled with poverty and domestic violence, of which he was a victim. His mother was addicted to drugs—first to painkillers, then to heroin. (‘I earned my first bloody nose at five and my first black eye at six,’ Vance recalls, of two times someone insulted his mother.)”

When children grow up in an environment where their emotional needs are not met, it can condition the child to either…

1) Subordinate their needs in order to take care of what should be THEIR caretaker. In these situations, the roles reverse, and they essentially become a parental-child who takes care of the dysfunctional and/or incapacitated parent (and/or other siblings)….

....or….

2) It can create a situation where children whose emotional needs are not met learn to “please” a dysfunctional caretaker. Basically, the child will obsessively/desperately try to please what is often an impossible-to-please parent….

…..in an attempt to receive what is often impossible to receive from that parent: attention/validation/love.

In some cases, the child will desperately attempt to please a dysfunctional/pathological parent to stave off aggression, criticism, or even abuse.

Often, children in these situations learn to manipulate a “powder keg” of a parent to prevent the parent from erupting emotionally.

Over time, these “people pleasing” behaviors become ingrained/enmeshed into the child’s personality. It becomes who they are….it’s how they engage the world…..and in some cases they may have an insatiable need to be validated that can never be satisfied no matter how much attention/validation they receive.

(I’ve written about the “Steal it Forward”, multi-generational cycling down of pathology that can occur with some children: )

Vance initially sought, and received, the acceptance of those he viewed outside of his own childhood/cultural experience:

Academia/intellectuals, the business world…..the non-“hillbilly” circles of society.

He did this with honest critiques of his past, of his family, and of rural/poor white people, in general…..

8/Image

....or, more specifically when Vance was attempting to “please” Academia/mainstream society/“elites”, he criticized rural whites "lack of agency".

Vance previously attempted to “please” the people (“Elites”) he now condemns….

….by criticizing the people (rural whites) that he now attempts to “please” (”MAGA”) ….by condemning “elites”.

And in the process, Vance now perpetuates the victimhood (and hate) that he previously criticized rural whites for embracing.

Below is a thread analyzing how the lack of self-efficacy ("lack of agency")…..and the role of victimhood….. has infected (rural) America:

9/Image

It’s impossible to understand Vance’s evolution without understanding the “Tucker Carlson effect”.

Vance was heavily influenced not just by @TuckerCarlson personally, but also by observing Carlson’s journey/evolution.

Over the last several years, Vance frequently appeared on Carlson’s show. And when he did, Vance received validating, smirking grins from Carlson whenever Vance said something that was inflammatorily on-brand for Carlson’s show.

10/
What Vance realized and learned from Carlson was that when they engaged society with measured/moderate/responsible thoughts and actions…..

......they receive a broad, but relatively tepid affirmation ("golf clap"-like approval) for “pleasing” them.

But when they engage in divisive, hate-filled, violence-inciting rhetoric….

....they may “please” a smaller/narrower group of people…..but the validation is intense and passionate.

The choice is broad, shallow, and tepid approval……versus a narrow, but intense validation.

11/

Because our society is so polarized/tribalized, and our information bubbles are so insulated….

....politicians can retreat back to….or in some cases permanently remain in….

.....the comfort and safety of the tribal ecosystem that not only rewards them for egregious behavior….

....but in some cases, facilitates/reinforces detachment from reality (for instance, the delusional narrative that Trump won the debate).

This allows them to perpetually be reaffirmed/validated after condemnation from main stream society.

12/
The inevitable consequence of all of this is that it has reached a point where political discourse has become so intense, and so personal, that the “fight” over policy or ideology often becomes a secondary/peripheral issue in the larger personal wars waged against political/personal enemies.

In 2019, I wrote about this “proxy war” dynamic that exists in politics.

This problem is highlighted by quote from a few years ago, where Vance said, “I think our people hate the right people”.

13/

Let's briefly review the neuropsychology of the politics of hate, revenge politics, and even political violence.

In 2023 I wrote about the “Hedonic Reward” (dopamine) of “revenge politics”: ()

Dopamine is related to the “reward system” of the brain, and is involved in the pleasurable experiences related to sex, gambling, etc.

Dopamine is also associated with the high experienced with cocaine use/addiction.

14/
This study showed that areas of the brain that are active when we experience pleasurable experiences (dopamine)…..also are active when engaging in retaliatory aggression.

15/
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
Image
A couple of key insights from the study are that:

1)The “hedonic reward” (pleasure) is dependent upon a prior instance of provocation….

….and...

2) That punishment (retaliatory aggression) activates/satiates the reward center of the brain.

To summarize, it shows that people experience pleasure from hurting others who have provoked or hurt us....because they “deserve” it.

This is especially relevant to the current political climate, and how dangerous this can be when disinformation/lies are rampant, and emotional incitement is frequent.

16/Image
Now let’s circle back around to recent events, and apply what we know about Vance’s childhood experiences, the neuropsychology of retaliatory aggression (“revenge politics”), and the dysfunctional state of American politics to explain Vance through the lens of the Haitian immigrant pet eating hysteria.

17/
One of the most powerful motivators for Vance is the thought of becoming president.

Nothing would be more validating.
Nothing would be more vindicating than becoming president.

There’s a saying I’ve used frequently in my own life, and with my clients:
“Success is the best revenge”.

Becoming president would not only be the most extreme manifestation of that philosophy….

....but, it would also provide Vance with the power to engage in literal “revenge” (“retaliatory aggression”) against the people who have hurt him….

....to get revenge against the “right” people that he "hates".

18/
In the lead up to Trump making his VP pick.....

.....Vice-Presidential hopefuls (Vance, Elise Stefanik, etc.) were shamelessly angling for the VP opportunity because they look at Trump’s age/health/lifestyle, and anticipate being president before 2028.

19/

Vance’s thought process was/is…..

….to shamelessly/humiliatingly kiss Trump’s ass….

.…to manipulate the MAGA base that Vance knows intimately well and has previously disparaged when he was attempting to “please” the “elites”….

…..and then when “president” Trump’s health fails (remember this process started wen Biden was running and presumed to be an easy victory), martyrize Trump, and assume power over the MAGA “Kingdom” in his early 40’s.

Regardless of how he actually feels about Trump, the incentive structure was/is for Vance to say and do whatever Vance had to say and do to be picked as VP……

.....and now that he is VP, it’s to say and do whatever Vance has to say and do to get Trump elected…..

…..because in order for Vance to be president…..

.....Trump has to be president.

20/Image
All of this appeared to be on display with the Haitian immigrant/pet eating hysteria…..

….especially when viewed through the lens of the false narrative about Vance having sex with a couch.

Vance likely was wounded by the couch lies. To Vance it probably felt like those who grew up with resources/money, and, even more importantly, who grew up in a functional home that met a child’s emotional needs….

…..were not only inhumanely mocking his traumatic experiences/childhood…..but they were making lies up to mock his childhood experience:

A deeply, emotionally/psychologically wounded kid whose childhood needs were not met because of addiction/abandonment/neglect/abuse…..

....a kid whose trauma likely led him to becoming overweight, which not only reinforced the previously experienced/existing trauma, but which (being overweight) resulted in its own trauma/insecurity-inducing experiences…..

.....especially as he became sexually aware, and was deprived of sexual experiences due to the effect the trauma had on his confidence, or the effect being overweight may have had on girls’ (lack of) interest in him, etc.

21/Image
Image

Mocking and lying about Vance having sex with a couch likely triggered or dredged up emotions related to that trauma…..

.....and the fact that it was “elites” who were knowingly/intentionally triggering/hurting him with lies about having sex with the couch likely reinforced the Vance’s “us/me versus them” framing of his political enemies…..

.....and, in his mind, vindictively legitimized an “ends justifies the means” rules of engagement….

.....as seen by his admission about “creating (making up/lying) about stories…..

22/
…..and vindictively legitimized an “ends justifies the means” rules of engagement....

.....when saying, “ I'm still gonna call them an illegal alien”….

23/
....and vindictively legitimized an “ends justifies the means” rules of engagement.....

.....when Vance said “keep the cat memes flowing”, when referring to the narrative about Haitians eating cats.

Here, he was literally parroting what was being said about him all over social media:

24/Image
To Vance, he is not only “hating the right people”……

.....he is “hating” (hurting”) anyone associated with the lies about him……

.....whether that is “hating” the “elites” spreading the lies…..or “hating” the people the “elites” care about (Haitian immigrants)…..

.....but he, and millions of Trump/Vance supporters, may be enjoying the pain/discomfort they are causing (“Hedonic Reward”/dopamine)...

.....because "they deserved” to have the lies spread about eating cats/dogs.

25/
There are several takeaways:

1) It’s important to be careful/disciplined/mature with political rhetoric.

26/

Image
2) “Hurt people, hurt people”…..

27/
.....and....3):

My sense is that Vance's ambition, and the self-absorbed belief that if he can just get into power he will fix all the wrongs in society......is a powerful rationalization to subdue the cognitive dissonance, not only in his own mind....but perhaps his wife's:

Basically, just do what he has to do in the short term and then everything will be better and he can go back to "normal".

As explained below, that's not only a fallacy, but it's a lie that Vance has been living for many years as the "ratchet-effect" of his mendaciousness progressively gets worse....not better....as he's acquired influence/power..

30/Image
It's possible that Vance's contempt for "childless cat ladies"...

....whom he over-generalizes as women who have no interest in having/caring for children....

.....is connected to his traumatic childhood experiences with an addicted/neglectful/abusive mother who he may have felt had no interest in caring for him.

Vance may be projecting his mother's lack of interest/ability to care for him onto any woman who doesn't have children.

31/Image
Yes, when a severely psychologically/emotionally "wounded" boy is a teenager.....he takes an AR-15 into his school for revenge.

When the severely psychologically/emotionally "wounded" boy is a middle aged or 60/70-something aged man......he seeks "retribution" by running for (Vice) President.

Very powerful video exposing religious extremism in Iran....

......and how it is effectively being exported to the West through radicalized religious leaders, academics....

....and, with the help of social media (TikTok)…..college and even high school/middle school kids.

1/
The Right has correctly identified the threat, the reach, and the effect of this infiltration in America/Europe.

However, it’s interesting to listen to people like @jordanbpeterson, @RubinReport, etc....

....obsess about the Iranian/Islamic/Marxist infiltration into Left/Progressive/Democratic politics....

2/Image
....to the point of not only sycophantically supporting the most pathologically disordered politician (Trump) in American history….

....and using "Trump Derangement Syndrome" to mock those with an acute awareness/expertise of Trump's pathology....

There may be several things going on here with Trump, his obsessive inability to let go of Biden....and the criticism surrounding Biden not running.

First, anyone who’s been in a bad relationship where years of resentment builds up has experienced the phenomenon where the current action/statement the other person is criticizing you for isn’t really about the current action/behavior…..

....it’s just that the current action/behavior presents an opportunity to channel/focus that built up resentment/contempt for you: "I'm frustrated/wounded, and I want to use this opportunity to hurt/wound you".

If you step right (in the non-political sense), you’re criticized for not stepping left….and if you had stepped left, you would have been criticized for not stepping right.

It’s not about which direction you step, it’s about exploiting the opportunity to criticize/attack you.

Similarly, the Right’s criticism was that Biden was too old, was “A Weekend at Bernie’s” puppet, and that it was a disgrace that the Democrats were running him again (stepped right, instead of left).

Then when Biden stepped down, and Kamala became the nominee…..a narrative is created around Biden not being there (stepped left instead of stepping right).

This happens constantly in politics where both parties have extreme contempt/resentment for each other...

1/Image
Another potential factor:

Trump’s Cluster B personality disorders cause him to create alternate realities when actual reality threatens him, or violates his pathologically distorted concept of “fairness”.

To Trump, it’s “unfair” that he/they were prepared for running against (and beating) Biden....

....but now he "unfairly" has to run against, and potentially lose to Kamala.

3/

For most of Trump’s life, he’s been able to live in his own alternate realities because his resources have protected from experiencing consequences for his pathological behavior...

...and/or because people have enabled his pathological thinking/actions.

This thread analyzes why society's social/legal systems fail to rein in narcissists/sociopaths:

Observations of Trump at his press conference:

He's raging. At the beginning of the speech, Trump’s eyes were squinty/narrowed…his brow/forehead was tight/furrowed….and his mouth was very tight, especially at the beginning of the speech.

When he's feeling it/himself at rally's, he's usually very animated/loose with his mouth. Not today.

The one notable time when he was animated with his mouth was when he was talking about Federal Reserve Chairman, Jerome Powell, and it indicated contempt (1:04:30).

1/
Image
Trump's rage was channeled into inciting fear:

He repeatedly claimed Americans are not safe, that the economy would collapse into a depression if he's not president, and that there will be a world war.

Trump uses fear to scare people into self-preservationally voting for a “strongman”:

2/
Image
Trump said, "This is the most dangerous period of time for our country".

The fear he is mongering is likely projection because he knows that if he loses the election he goes to prison….so the wave of enthusiasm for Harris means….. "this is the most dangerous period of time for [him]”.

He's scared. He channels fear into anger. He channels anger into retaliation aggression (revenge). This thread analyzes the neuropsychological process of "revenge politics"

Trump literally thinks like child. He sounds like a 3 year old telling a shopping mall Santa Claus what a good boy he has been.....and which neighbor kid has been mean to him.

Deciphered transcript of Trump's random stream of Narcissistic consciousness from the interview:

“One of the most famous/richest/influential people (Zuckerberg) in the world who runs one of the biggest/most important companies in the world……called me multiple times because I’m so important, and because he wanted to talk to me so badly….to tell me how amazing the media/TV event/show that I headlined (RNC convention) was…..to tell me how amazing I am….and to tell me how brave I am……and to tell me that because I am so brave that this really important influential person (Zuckerberg) cannot fathom supporting anyone but me because he respects me so much….because although this amazing grandiose thing (my amazing reaction to the assassination attempt) is so respected by this important person (Zuckerberg)….but to me it was a normal response because I’m so amazing that it’s normal for me to do amazing things….and because I’m so amazing I’m going to remind everyone again that this really important person (Zuckerberg) called me multiple times on consecutive days to tell me how amazing I am…..and to grovel to me with apologies……..but these bad people who don’t like me enough (Google) didn’t call me to tell me how amazing I am or to grovel to me….I do shows like yours (H)….your show is amazing because you have me on, and grovel to me because I’m amazing….and they (the rest of the country who loves me) show clips of your show when I’m on “all over the place” because I’m amazing….and then “you’re [I’m] all over those little beautiful cell phones” that have pictures/videos of me, because I’m amazing….you have a great product, a great brand because you grovel to me…..so you [“I”] have to get out….you [“I”] have to do things like your amazing show (because you grovel to me)….and other shows that grovel to me…..Google has been very bad, they’ve been very irresponsible because they don’t grovel to me….and if/when I’m president I’m going to take retaliatory actions [“I will be your retribution”] against them…..I will say this…..this really important person [Zuckerberg] that I used to hate, but am now repeatedly reminding everyone of how much he likes me and that “he called me a lot”…..he likes me….”

When analyzing why some women still support a pathologically immoral, abusive political leader like Trump…

....it’s important to consider the role of fear…...and evolutionary psychology:

"Primal tribalism"

Let’s unpack….

1/
Not all of Trump’s supporter are bad people.

In fact, as people like @TimAlberta have written/analyzed, when separated from political consumption/discourse, most are still good people in just about every other aspect of their life.

2/
bytimalberta.com
But politics, and Trump in particular, cause otherwise good people to become unrecognizable from who they were years ago...

....or in some cases...

...who they were just minutes/hours before the topic of politics/Trump comes up in conversation.

Why?

Everything must be viewed through the lens of Trump's extreme narcissism.

Even Trump's sociopathy occurs in the service of his Narcissism.

As explained in my analysis of @gtconway3d's & @duty2warn's conversation of @psychopac24’s ad:

“Trump’s narcissism > his sociopathy”:

1/
Image
In 2019, there was a @JimVandeHei interview of Trump where Trump appeared to get emotional talking about:

“I want to be nice. I don’t want to be this way, but I have to be this way”.

I wrote about how Trump is counterintuitively a "people pleaser".

2/
Image
With regards to racism, there may elements of narcissism (grandiosity, superiority complex) that factor in.....

....which may rise to the level of sociopathy (reckless disregard for the safety of others) when it metastasizes to "White Supremacy".
