1. Division of Labor: The Core Driver of the Industrial Revolution
The reason we study history is that history always repeats itself in broad strokes. This holds true even in the digital age. Thus, I believe the answer to the question "How can blockchain and Web3 achieve explosive growth in terms of productivity?" also lies in history. When in history did humanity experience explosive growth in productivity? It was during the Industrial Revolution. So, what had the greatest impact on productivity during the Industrial Revolution? It was the Division of Labor.
2. The Evolution of Blockchain: From Monolithic to Performance-Centric
Looking back at the history of blockchain technology, we can see its evolution from the monolithic structure that began with Ethereum. While early Ethereum aimed for versatility, it faced scalability issues, as exemplified by the CryptoKitties incident. As an alternative, performance-centric blockchains like Solana emerged, gaining market attention by offering fast processing speeds and low fees. However, challenges remain in terms of decentralization and customization.
3. The Emergence of App Chains: Cosmos and Avalanche
Cosmos and Avalanche introduced a new paradigm of application-specific chains. They provide infrastructure optimized for specific applications while maintaining inter-chain interoperability through protocols like IBC or ICM. Osmosis, Stargaze, and DeFi Kingdoms are prime examples. However, this approach also faces new challenges in economic security and fragmentation of user experience.
4. Purpose-Built Blockchains: The Rise of a New Paradigm
Recently emerged purpose-built blockchains can be seen as a methodology that ingeniously combines the advantages of existing blockchain designs. While providing infrastructure optimized for specific use cases, they focus on solving problems in traditional industries beyond Web3-native areas. Story, Injective, and Evergreen Layer 1 are examples. However, this approach also faces the challenge of balancing the benefits of use cases with operational overhead.
5. The Future of Blockchain: A Productivity Revolution Through Division of Labor
It appears that the blockchain industry is following the trend of division of labor, much like traditional industries. If blockchains specialized in different sectors collaborate leveraging their respective strengths, we may witness a more efficient and innovative blockchain ecosystem. Of course, this will require the development of messaging protocols that facilitate seamless inter-chain communication and chain abstraction work. Just as the division of labor laid the foundation for the Industrial Revolution and human prosperity, we hope that the emergence of purpose-built blockchains and their seamless collaboration will bring about a productivity revolution in the blockchain industry.
