A review of 54 cardiac tissue samples showed "SARS-CoV-2 infects cardiomyocytes by the TNF-NF-κB pathway, potentially triggering acute cardiovascular complications and increasing the long-term cardiovascular risk in COVID-19 patients."
"The most notable expression change [in the study] .. was observed in a gene encoding an immune cytokine known to be transcriptionally upregulated during SARS-CoV infection—CXCL2, which recruits immune cells to sites of inflammation."
"Increased levels of inflammatory cytokines [in relation to Covid] may contribute to cardiac dysfunction"
"Additionally, NF-κB plays a key role in regulating inflammation, and its activation has been linked to cardiac inflammation and remodeling in heart failure. The NF-κB pathway plays a central role in the regulation of immune responses, inflammation, cell survival" etc.
Additional evidence of pathology (details in the paper) was identified in the study, which could explain cardiovascular disease triggered by Covid, including heart failure
Complex paper rich of details which can be found in the study. It raises further concerns over the well known effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the cardiovascular system. I flag for the community's attention

I had the pleasure to present (virtually) at @winslow_la conference on Covid activism today. My talk "Canaries in the coal mines. Patient activism in early Covid epicenters" offered snapshots of survivors' advocacy leading to #LongCovid recognition
A thread
#ConfWinslowCovid24
Pandemics are history making events. The way we record pandemic history has huge implications for public health, public safety, preparedness, prevention, justice, patient rights. A key historical aspect of this pandemic is patient activism, which redefined how Covid is understood
Covid survivors in the first wave are the canaries in the coal mines: often abandoned at home with no medical care, in collapsed healthcare systems, they/we raised the alarm about the true nature of Covid, and brought #LongCovid to light
We have known Covid can cause prolonged disease affecting the brain and central nervous system for years. This is including after asymptomatic/pauci-symptomatic and so-called mild acute cases. Many of the first reports came from first-wave survivors themselves
e.g. one important study that gained much attention in 2021 to 2022 (UK Biobank)
In a sample of 2883 Covid survivors from California 🇺🇸 interviewed at least 30 days post Covid, 20.9% reported "incomplete recovery" and 4.9% "severe" LC. Severe acute Covid and being unvaccinated appeared to be predictors of #LongCovid in the study sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
The study leveraged "survey responses from a large serosurveillance study, [to] assess prevalence estimates [of #LongCovid] using five different long COVID definitions among California residents."
The study, thus, assessed "the prevalence of long COVID across five different definitions including, 1) persistent COVID-19 symptoms, 2) incomplete recovery, 3) sought healthcare for long COVID, 4) functional impact on daily activity, and 5) severe long COVID"
In a sample of 205 patients with COPD and SARS-CoV-2 Omicron, 2022, COPD did not independently increase the risk of COVID-19 mortality. However, COPD patients were more likely to require oxygen and noninvasive ventilation than non-COPD
The retrospective cohort study investigated the association between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and the prognosis of COVID-19 patients infected with Omicron variant.
The study found that "COPD itself was not an independent risk factor for COVID-19 mortality. Age, sex, vaccination status, comorbidities, and long-term oxygen therapy use were important predictors of mortality."
We need some clarity here, based on the scientific and epistemological evidence 1. What does Jha mean by "very high level of population immunity" to SARS-CoV-2? We know scientifically people can be infected again and again with the virus, even if vaccinated
2. The US alone, where Jha was Biden's Covid "czar", is currently experiencing over 1000 official Covid deaths a week, with limited surveillance. SARS-CoV-2 was spreading at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) and even Hillary Clinton has Covid
We know scientifically that, while acute Covid remains fatal in a number of individuals, one of the biggest dangers is #LongCovid (prolonged disease from SARS-CoV-2 infection), which can often present even in non-hospitalized patients
