My god did JD Vance lie and gaslight his way through last night's VP debate. About big things. So casually. Things that are so easy to call out.
Like.... (1/x)
... his claim that Trump “salvaged” Obamacare.
How many times did Republicans in Congress try (and fail) to dismantle Obamacare? 65? 70? And how many times did Trump demand that they do it, before and after he became president? Dozens.
Last night, Vance bizarrely claimed Trump was Obamacare's savior because of some regulations he put in place as president.
“I think you can make a really good argument that it salvaged Obamacare, which was doing disastrously until Donald Trump came along,” he said.
What??
“When Obamacare was crushing under the weight of its own regulatory burden + health care costs... Trump could have destroyed the program,” Vance said. “Instead, he worked in a bipartisan way to ensure that Americans had access to affordable care.” Yeah no. huffpost.com/entry/jd-vance…
All Trump talked about was his plan to repeal Obamacare. It was one of his key campaign promises in his 2016 campaign.
By July 2017, GOP efforts to tank it had failed dozens of times. Trump was egging them on the whole time.
I already forgot the whole (1/x) thing. Whatever.
Vance also scoffed at the idea that he supported a national abortion ban.
Except he did, and it's so easy to look it up.
He backed a 15-week ban and said anyone who didn't would be making the U.S. "the most barbaric pro-abortion regime" in the world. cbsnews.com/news/ohio-deba…
Vance lied so much about his record on abortion.
He straight-up wanted to "end abortion," something he put on his own Senate campaign website -- until Trump tapped him to be VP, and then he quickly scrubbed that.
Vance somehow stood up there and, with full confidence, said Trump "peacefully gave over power" in Jan. 2021.
An image from the peaceful transfer of presidential power in Jan. 2021.
Here are some photos from that whole insurrection that Trump fueled -- and that left 140+ cops injured, several later dead by suicide and that nearly got his VP killed.
In case you were wondering why JD Vance was on stage last night and not Mike Pence. npr.org/sections/pictu…
Never mind that Vance spent all night whitewashing Trump's extreme plans for a second term. He repeatedly refused to talk about Trump's plans for mass deportations and setting up camps along the border -- and separating parents from their children. huffpost.com/entry/jd-vance…
Truly, a disturbing display last night by JD Vance.
His role on the ticket -- and in a potential second Trump admin -- is simply to spread the same dangerous lies and extreme policy plans that Trump shouts about in all-caps on social media, but in a slicker way.

Ben & Jerry’s co-founders have created a new limited edition ice cream flavor in support of Kamala Harris' campaign: "Kamala’s Coconut Jubilee." 🥥
MoveOn is raffling off free, signed pints as part of a new "Scoop the Voter" tour of swing states. huffpost.com/entry/2024-ele…
MoveOn will be driving an ice cream truck to more than 20 cities in swing states -- PA, MA, NV, AZ, MI -- handing out ice cream and engaging with voters.
Other Harris-themed ice cream flavors on the truck: "Unburdened By What Has Vanilla Bean" and "Fight For Our Rights Sorbet."
Today, a group of House Dems is launching a new task force to fight Trump's "dystopian" policy plans if he wins in Nov.
“We have to mount the resistance in real time," said Rep. Jared Huffman. "If we’re caught off guard by it, we’re going to be too late." huffpost.com/entry/house-de…
Huffman is very, very concerned that most people don't realize what Trump is planning to do if he gets back into the White House. And how quickly he can act.
"I believe we’re really close to having our democracy replaced by a dystopian, right-wing theocracy," he told HuffPost.
Trump's policy agenda includes deporting 11M people, banning abortion pills nationwide and deploying U.S. troops against American citizens.
They’re not strictly his plans; the Heritage Foundation provided him with a 920-page “Project 2025” blueprint that he intends to follow.
NEW: Leonard Peltier, the Native American rights activist the U.S. govt put in prison ~50 years ago, is getting what may be his last chance at freedom.
FBI director Chris Wray says the bureau remains opposed to his parole.
ICYMI: In a full-blown conspiratorial rant, Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-Wis.) said Donald Trump's felony conviction is proof that Democrats are akin to Nazis taking power in Germany in the 1930s huffpost.com/entry/derrick-…
“The historical references and the similarities, the similarities to what the Democrat Party has been doing, they cannot be denied at this point," Van Orden claimed. "You simply cannot deny them.”
(You can.)
Van Orden also compared Trump to someone enduring the Soviet Union’s gulag system because he's a convicted felon now.
"Every single person that was sentenced to decades in the gulag and died there, committed suicide ... was convicted by a court in the Soviet Union."
JUST IN: The Senate just confirmed Nicole Berner, a longtime SEIU lawyer and former Planned Parenthood litigator, to a lifetime federal judgeship on a U.S. appeals court. huffpost.com/entry/nicole-b…
The final vote was 50-47.
No Republicans voted to confirm Berner. Not even the two GOP senators who identify as pro-choice, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski.
Progressives are chalking up a win with Berner's confirmation.
She's a 17-year lawyer for Service Employees International Union, most recently its general counsel.
She was a staff attorney for Planned Parenthood.
She's fought for all kinds of civil rights issues in courts.
ICYMI: Biden's historic Muslim judicial nominee Adeel Mangi may not have the votes because 1) the GOP has spent months falsely casting him as an antisemitic, anti-cop terrorist sympathizer and 2) a coupla Dems are cowering.
The attacks on Mangi have been so offensive I can't believe this hasn't gotten more attn.
For starters, Ted Cruz, Tom Cotton + Josh Hawley demanded in his Senate hearing that he share his *personal views* on 9/11, the Oct. 7 attack in Israel + the Israeli-Hamas conflict.
A Leonard Leo-aligned judicial group ran attack ads against Mangi -- a seasoned and award-winning civil litigator in NJ -- saying he is “radical” and an “antisemite."
The ads use footage of the 9/11 plane crash, overlaid with an incredibly misleading headline about Mangi.
