🇬🇪The 2008 Russia-Georgia war is one of the most misrepresented events in post-Soviet history. Today, Georgian Dream (GD) is twisting facts about the war to serve their political agenda ahead of the parliamentary elections.
🧵We need to get the facts straight.
1/17Image
First, Georgia did not start the August 2008 war. Claims that Georgia initiated the conflict are part of a broader Russian disinformation campaign, now weaponized by GD for domestic political gain.
Let’s dive into why this matters.
2/17Image
In the lead-up to the August war, tensions had been escalating for years. Russia's creeping occupation of Georgian territories like Abkhazia and South Ossetia set the stage for the conflict, which came to a head on August 7, 2008.
3/17Image
Despite what GD claims, the Council of Europe 🇪🇺has never blamed Georgia for the war. Their resolution acknowledged the complex lead-up but placed the spotlight on Russia’s aggressive military intervention and subsequent occupation of Georgian territories.
4/17
A key disinformation narrative pushed by GD is that former President Saakashvili provoked Russia into attacking. This is a deliberate distortion. Georgia was responding to a Russian invasion, not starting a war. Let’s look at the facts.
5/17
On August 7, 2008, Russian forces crossed into Georgian territory through the Roki Tunnel. This incursion was the true beginning of the war, forcing Georgia into a defensive position.
GD’s claim that the war started on August 8 aligns with Russian propaganda.
6/17Image
GD’s manipulation of the war’s timeline plays into the Kremlin's larger goal of blaming the victim. Russia has long aimed to portray Georgia as an aggressor to justify its continued military presence in occupied territories. This narrative must be challenged.
7/17
Fast forward to 2024: Georgian Dream is recycling these falsehoods as part of their pre-election strategy, using fear of war to push the idea that only they can maintain peace in Georgia. In reality, they’re creating a wedge between Georgia and the West.
8/17
By framing Western alliances, particularly with the US and EU, as a threat to Georgian peace, GD seeks to weaken Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations.
The message is clear: align with Russia, or face war. This is a dangerous, misleading tactic.
9/17Image
Western audiences might not be familiar with this strategy, but it mirrors Russian disinformation used across Eastern Europe. The idea is simple: distort historical events to create internal division and weaken ties to Western institutions like NATO and the EU.
10/17
Investigative Media Lab’s reporting shows how GD’s narratives twist key facts, using selective history to justify their claims. These distortions harm Georgia’s international reputation and undermine its democratic trajectory. @AnnaGvarishvili
11/17 medialab.ug.edu.ge/en/research/in…
To be clear, the war was a Russian invasion—a violation of Georgia’s sovereignty and international law. Despite what GD says, the international community, including the US, came to Georgia’s aid during the conflict, providing vital support.
12/17Image
Another GD narrative suggests that the West only provided Georgia with “water and diapers” during the 2008 war. This is false. The US led a robust humanitarian mission and provided military assistance to secure key Georgian infrastructure.
13/17
The truth is crucial here. The 2008 war wasn’t an isolated event; it was part of a broader Russian strategy to destabilize the region. 6 years later Russia invaded Ukraine. Understanding Georgia’s history is key to recognizing these patterns.
14/17Image
Georgian Dream's disinformation campaign is not just about rewriting history—it’s about shaping Georgia’s future. If their narratives dominate, it could steer the country further away from the EU and NATO, weakening its democratic institutions. @GEObservatory
15/17 Image
As Georgian Dream continues to push the "war vs peace" narrative, they conveniently ignore their own failures in governance—stagnation, democratic backsliding, and poor relations with Western allies. Instead, they offer a return to the USSR.

Meet Beka Odisharia—yet another troubling example of the kind of figures Georgian Dream elects to Parliament. Known for offensive behavior and anti-Western rhetoric, Odisharia represents the darker side of GD’s leadership.
1/6Image
A prime example of entitlement? His son was caught on video acting aggressively toward🇩🇪German police. Instead of condemning the behavior, Odisharia defended him, showing the impunity that runs in the family.

Odisharia's political career is filled with controversy. He supported the "foreign agents" law, which threatens Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations. His once called female MPs “a herd of unf*cked/sexually unsatisfied females,” during a debates.

🇬🇪Georgian Dream says they will ban the opposition if they secure a constitutional majority in the upcoming election, arguing that this mirrors actions taken by Ukraine and Moldova.
🧵Let's unpack why this rhetoric is not just misleading—it's dangerous for Georgia's democracy
1/9Image
🇪🇺Georgian Dream claims Ukraine and Moldova banned parties with EU support, but that the EU gets angry when Georgian Dream says the "same."
This is a gross misrepresentation of reality.
2/9
🇺🇦Ukraine banned specific political parties during its defense against an existential threat: the Russian invasion. These parties had direct, demonstrable ties to the Kremlin, aiding an aggressor in wartime.
Georgia's situation is vastly different.

🇬🇪BREAKING: Voter suppression in Georgia's October 26th election is intensifying. A recent Tbilisi court decision bars Transparency International Georgia @Transparency_GE from observing the election
🧵—here’s why this move is alarming and part of a broader trend.Image
Although TI Georgia hasn't been formally stripped of its status as an election observer, they are effectively unable to observe the October 26th elections as TI Georgia. For the first time in 24 years, they won't have a single observer registered at polling stations.
2/10
This ruling is not only absurd but blatantly designed to silence independent oversight. By treating TI Georgia as a political party, effectively undermining their role as an independent watchdog.

🇬🇪The pro-Russian rulers of Georgia claim they're the only safeguard of peace, insisting that a vote for the opposition will lead to war.
But history and facts say otherwise.
🧵 It’s time to expose GD's fearmongering and show how Russia's weakness is an opportunity for Georgia.Image
🔎 Let’s start with Russia. Historically, it has used force to maintain influence over Georgia, but today, Russia is far weaker than it's been in decades. Its military struggles in Ukraine reveal the cracks in what was once considered an "unstoppable" force.
2/22 Image
🇷🇺 Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was meant to be a quick, decisive show of strength. Instead, it’s become a drawn-out conflict, exposing massive military, logistical, and organizational failures. This reality fundamentally changes the security dynamics in the region.

🇬🇪GD's latest "war vs. peace" campaign is nothing short of a manipulative, fear-mongering ploy to scare Georgians into submission. By falsely framing every opposition party as warmongers, they're hoping to cling to power by spreading deceit.
🧵Georgians won't be fooled! 🚫
1/13 Image
🚩 Their graphic banners, depicting war-torn images of Georgia and labeling them with opposition ballot numbers, are a disgraceful attempt to sow fear and division. This blatant manipulation reeks of desperation, signaling a ruling party that has run out of genuine ideas.
2/13Image
💭 Let's be clear: Georgian Dream has nothing left to offer. When a government relies solely on fear-mongering instead of presenting a real vision for the future, it’s a sure sign they’re out of touch with the people’s needs. Their campaign is all bark, no substance. 🐶

🇬🇪With Gakharia’s "For Georgia" party's recent decision to sign the Georgian Charter, all major opposition coalitions have united under one banner. President Salome @Zourabichvili_S has succeeded in uniting the entire Georgian opposition.
🧵Let’s explore what this means.
1/21 Image
💡 The Charter is more than just a document; it’s a roadmap for progress, embodying a shared commitment to a European path and standing as a counter to the anti-Western rhetoric from GD.
Now, the entire opposition is united under this Charter:

📅 October 26 will be a defining moment in Georgian politics, as the Charter unites pro-Western parties against the Eurosceptic and pro-Russian policies of the ruling Georgian Dream @GeorgianDream41.
The stakes couldn't be higher!
