I talked to North Carolina state Rep. Lindsey Prather, who represents part of Buncombe County -- a devastated region where Asheville is based -- about whether misinformation is affecting the disaster recovery efforts there.

(Short answer: it is.) huffpost.com/entry/hurrican…
“The biggest issue is rumors and fake memes and photos of people being trapped in areas around the county," said Prather, who said local/state/fed govt officials are working around the clock to help.

"We send folks out to rescue them, and there’s no one there to be rescued."
Prather said there's no cell service for much of the area.

The problem is when people get WiFi for a few mins, go on FB and see posts about people being trapped, share it without verifying it, those posts "spread like wildfire," rescue teams rush out there and nobody's there.
The lack of cell service is a big problem for misinfo.

Misinfo has been spreading about certain parts of the county unfairly getting more help than others, when the reality is the disaster response is focused on getting supplies to the most highly populated and accessible areas.
“That’s impacting us, too,” said Prather. “We’re having to take time to respond to things like that, and explain to people how disaster response works.” huffpost.com/entry/hurrican…
I asked if she feels like FEMA's response has been good so far in helping this devastated community.

"I do," she said. "I think the federal government is doing everything they can. They’ve got a ton of people on the ground. Biden has flown over multiple times."
The conspiracy theories and misinformation about the federal government’s response to Helene have gotten so out of control that FEMA now has an entire page on its website dedicated to countering false claims about it
fema.gov/disaster/curre…
I asked Willie Nunn, a senior FEMA official in South Carolina, how damaging misinformation and conspiracies are for disaster recovery efforts.

“Misinformation always affects the people who are trying to help, and the people who need the help."
“It really impacts us because of the trust factor that we need,” said Nunn.

“The biggest thing, if the misinformation is negative ... is that the survivors, it will discourage them to call us. If we don’t know where they are, we can’t meet them where they are.”
Some of the conspiracies and misinfo being spread online about the disaster response in NC:

FEMA is stealing money from donations, the govt has denied body bags, bodies aren't being buried, the govt is controlling the weather from Antarctica...?huffpost.com/entry/hurrican…
One thing I'll add that didn't make it into this story: Prather saying nobody on the ground is playing politics with this:

"I’m in regular communication, as a Democrat, to Republicans all the time. There’s no partisanship right now. That stuff is the last thing on our minds."

My god did JD Vance lie and gaslight his way through last night's VP debate. About big things. So casually. Things that are so easy to call out.

Like.... (1/x)
... his claim that Trump “salvaged” Obamacare.

How many times did Republicans in Congress try (and fail) to dismantle Obamacare? 65? 70? And how many times did Trump demand that they do it, before and after he became president? Dozens.
Last night, Vance bizarrely claimed Trump was Obamacare's savior because of some regulations he put in place as president.

“I think you can make a really good argument that it salvaged Obamacare, which was doing disastrously until Donald Trump came along,” he said.

What??

Today, a group of House Dems is launching a new task force to fight Trump's "dystopian" policy plans if he wins in Nov.

“We have to mount the resistance in real time," said Rep. Jared Huffman. "If we’re caught off guard by it, we’re going to be too late." huffpost.com/entry/house-de…
Huffman is very, very concerned that most people don't realize what Trump is planning to do if he gets back into the White House. And how quickly he can act.

"I believe we’re really close to having our democracy replaced by a dystopian, right-wing theocracy," he told HuffPost.
Trump's policy agenda includes deporting 11M people, banning abortion pills nationwide and deploying U.S. troops against American citizens.

They’re not strictly his plans; the Heritage Foundation provided him with a 920-page “Project 2025” blueprint that he intends to follow.

NEW: Leonard Peltier, the Native American rights activist the U.S. govt put in prison ~50 years ago, is getting what may be his last chance at freedom.

FBI director Chris Wray says the bureau remains opposed to his parole.

His statement is full of holes. huffpost.com/entry/leonard-…
Things to know about Peltier's case.

The U.S. govt put him in prison after he was convicted for killing 2 FBI agents in a shoot-out on a S.D. reservation.

There was never evidence he committed a crime.

The FBI + U.S. Atty's office never did figure out who killed those agents.
Peltier's trial was riddled with misconduct.

Prosecutors hid key evidence.

The FBI threatened and coerced witnesses into lying.

On the second day of the trial, a juror admitted she was biased against Native Americans but she was kept on the jury anyway.

Morning! ☕️

ICYMI: In a full-blown conspiratorial rant, Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-Wis.) said Donald Trump's felony conviction is proof that Democrats are akin to Nazis taking power in Germany in the 1930s huffpost.com/entry/derrick-…
“The historical references and the similarities, the similarities to what the Democrat Party has been doing, they cannot be denied at this point," Van Orden claimed. "You simply cannot deny them.”

(You can.)
Van Orden also compared Trump to someone enduring the Soviet Union’s gulag system because he's a convicted felon now.

"Every single person that was sentenced to decades in the gulag and died there, committed suicide ... was convicted by a court in the Soviet Union."

JUST IN: The Senate just confirmed Nicole Berner, a longtime SEIU lawyer and former Planned Parenthood litigator, to a lifetime federal judgeship on a U.S. appeals court. huffpost.com/entry/nicole-b…
The final vote was 50-47.

No Republicans voted to confirm Berner. Not even the two GOP senators who identify as pro-choice, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski.
Progressives are chalking up a win with Berner's confirmation.

She's a 17-year lawyer for Service Employees International Union, most recently its general counsel.

She was a staff attorney for Planned Parenthood.

She's fought for all kinds of civil rights issues in courts.
