A BIRD SPREAD ITS WINGS: The first Block 1 bird unfurls AHEAD of schedule
TIME TO EXECUTION. As Tut points out, 70 days from factory floor to unfurling. Execution is what will drive the stock price to big boy market caps ($100bn+).
WARRANTS: $ASTS announced the preliminary results from the warrant redemption. 13.6MM warrants were exercised, which is larger than the original amount outstanding because many of the private warrants converted. 6.05MM private warrants were originally issued and on my calculation, 3.75MM remain.
SAMBAR IS A FREE AGENT: We love this guy. I hope he goes to $ASTS. It would be a huge win for the Company.
ASTS AND ITS CORDIAL FCC MEETING: While SpaceX is throwing firebombs at everyone, Abel had a nice meeting with the FCC. They discussed the full constellation, all the amazing things they can do. They also talked about the very same first responders who would benefit from the service…served by FirstNet.
ASTS AND CREDITIBLE PROFESSORS: Amid all the people with strong biases and motivations (wait, oh yeah…me)…it's fascinating to see professors just chime in and lay out the straight math
RAKUTEN STARTS MARKETING: Here is the translation:
DISASTER AND EMERGENCY CELLULAR SERVICE: Hurricane Helene was a disaster. Mobile systems were destroyed, impeding rescue efforts and highlighting the incredible importance of $ASTS once it is operationalized and integrated with FirstNet
TOWER SALES: $ASTS partners continue to sell their tower assets. We have executives talking openly about how $ASTS will replace towers in rural areas, which will hit the value of those assets down the line. Disruption is sometimes visible to those in the know
TOWER SALES: But were there signs? Even the non-English speakers see the trend. Ya me lo vi!
ECHOSTAR: It'll be interesting to see what happens here. Ergen has fought a valiant battle to stay alive and $ASTS could help him light up his service. As written above before, it does not make sense for a would-be MNO to build a constellation because of the multi-client problem; they only use it over a certain geographic area when that cost can be shared globally by a 3rd party provider ($ASTS). We'll see. I doubt they get anything done by themselves
STARLINK / T-MOBILE PLAN: Odd. Starlink really is a trojan horse to directly form a relationship with T-Mobile customers. Only thing I can figure is that when it was signed, TMUS was high on drugs and got caught up in hype without canvassing the market. Now that Starlink is a mess, they are probably looking to exit. Nothing is dumber than opening up your subscribers to a competitor…nothing. T-Mobile's arrangement with SpaceX is structured so that the terrestrial (ground-based) and satellite networks operate independently. However, T-Mobile will ensure that emergency communications, whether received through the satellite or terrestrial network, are transmitted to the appropriate emergency services or call centers.
SPACEX GOES BONKERS: SpaceX wrote an exoriating letter to the FCC about Omnispace's interference claims. In fairness, Omnispace seems like a spectrum squatter. If I were an FCC employee, I'd probably be reading their complaints a bit skeptically, but I'm not an FCC employee so I'll just let these two battle it out
SPACEX GOES FULL TILT: SpaceX called $ASTS a meme stock (truly unreal) and that it was engaged in anticompetitive practices against SpaceX because it was holding SpaceX to the rules approved by the FCC The math around SpaceX's argument is valid (lower frequencies have more interference, all else equal) but the rules were approved by the FCC licensing.fcc.gov/myibfs/downloa…
STARLINK GETS TESTING AUTHORIZATIONS: Based on my analysis of the permits, they are required to comply with the OOBE limits.
COOL #SPACEMOB CONTENT: It would be cool to get cards of $ASTS employees at the next launch. Key contributions and patents (or sick days accrued, but not taken) as stats on the back…
Massive cash influx from warrant redemption and huge collision of retail investors who did not know how to exercise them
THE INTERVIEW: Chris and Abel. Goddamn. This was Chris' first rocket launch. Chris loved the #Spacemob energy. F- yeah. We're here. Chris got his platoon back, but this time we're more diehard than what he was used to with the SEALS. Did SEAL training involve holding a stock down 90%? I think not.
Chris goes directly to $ASTS replacing terrestrial CAPEX. This is about avoidance of future CAPEX, which will have incredible ROI. This is the ScotiaBank thesis and frankly, more powerful than our original thesis. "Abel is one of the great inventors of our time." Chris had same reaction when Abel launched a phone into space for Bluewalker-1. When I learned that I sat back and thought, "this guy thinks differently." I wasn't alone.
Abel said something I love, "We're a very proud American company." Giddy up.
ASTS VIDEO: A cool recap video showing the incredible launch. I view this was a way $ASTS of telling investors that things are going well.
OUR FRIEND STEVE: This is one of the most beautiful and touching things I've seen. Steve will get to see the success of $ASTS with a front row seat to future launches and wearing his Block 1 pin.
It was another busy week. Here is your weekend update on all things $ASTS before our launch on Thursday.
LAUNCH: As anticipated, $ASTS announced a launch date for Block 1. The Company made sure it was adult-only by making it at 5am launch so that children will pass out in the bus. We are all very excited to watch this incredible event. It will be webcast so make sure to tune in. Incredible shout out to the $ASTS IR team that is allowing investors to come. feeds.issuerdirect.com/news-release.h…
LAUNCH. Tut nailed it here: $ASTS is demonstrating a new level of shareholder responsiveness. Class act. @scottwisniews is building a foundation fit for a generational company.
Were you out last week? Want to catch up on $ASTS news so that you can hit the ground running in September?
Welcome to the $ASTS Weekend Update with as much relevant content from the prior week in one easy-to-use thread
WARRANT REDEMPTION. The big financing news was the redemption of the $ASTS warrants. This will give $ASTS >$150MM of fresh capital to help accelerate Block 2 businesswire.com/news/home/2024…
WARRANT REDEMPTION. The impact on the sources and uses is shown below. $ASTS has a solid balance sheet that will get yet stronger with new MNO deals, FirstNet, 5G fund, and Exim (none of which are included in the model below)
🚨A new instalment of #hardcoredd for $ASTS 🚨 Here I summarize the recent FCC filings relating to SpaceX and Starlink to help us understand the problem they have.
This could be one of the all-time unexpected upside surprises for a duopoly: SpaceX was a large overhang for investors and then physics entered the room leaving $ASTS as the only approved player
Here is background on Starlink's D2C program. The key points are they utilize a thin slice of high-band PCS spectrum, which matters in terms of guard band availability, system throughput, and propagation. Starlink repurposed Swarm for the effort, which is key: it was never built for purpose
$ASTS was built from the ground-up to deliver D2C functionality while not creating harmful interference. It does this by creating a nice "square shaped" signal around the utilized frequency and cuts off the "side-lobes" that will splash outside of the intended frequencies and cause interference
