I went to a rave for work reasons, and it made me think about implicit White identity, the White condition, post-civility and its malcontents, and the mechanics of networking.

But the gist of it is simple: Bobos in Paradise, 24 years on. Image
The demographics of the rave were early to late 30s professional class New Yorkers. The style was mostly similar to that of Lower Manhattan, modified for people a decade older. And it is White. Very White. At least 90% White. And Liberal.

But why? Why is it like this?
A lot has been said about 00s music as the last stand of implicit White identity. Or of the concert, the emo, alt, etc. Burning Man. But these things aren't explicitly White, and they allegedly are inclusive. And there's nothing at face value to make them exclusive.
The values proclaimed by the pulsing Eurobeat are simple: Unity, Oneness. Everyone deserves to be in First Class because you're all First Class humans. A dissolution of differences. But it's homogenous. And why would people spend their previous 4HL free time like this?
What is the White condition, as opposed to, say, the Asian? Both Japan and Europe are held to be homogenous, high trust society. But these raves aren't full of East Asians. There are a few. But it's because "high trust" really refers to two separate phenomena.
Asians are Optimizers. Asians are goal-oriented creatures. It's not just striving, but striving in a fixed way towards a given goal. Asians are not taking a test, they are trying to ace the test. A very important distinction. Asians don't do things "just because".
Whites are Explorers. The rave highlights this behavior because it doesn't have any goals. The people are "dancing", but White dancing is a vague group shuffle rather than competitive rhythmic display like Blacks. They're just vibing. Enjoying the scene. Being in the moment.
We can imagine this in video game context. If Whites are trying to find all the secrets, then Asians are trying to get the high score. The secret third thing, the Sociopath, is trying to Win The Game. And this leads to different forms of "high trust" behavior.
The rave is not kept in line by security. There are rules, yes. But the rules are not enforced by guards. People are not watching you. People are watching *themselves*. Because they want to obey the rules. White high trust is implicit theocracy.
They are kept in line because they are all united under one common cause towards a common vision. That's the implicit theocracy. You don't need to strictly enforce rules because people will obey the rules to advance a cause they themselves are invested in.

"Unity."
East Asian societies are hierarchical. The order is kept through an explicit hierarchy and pyramid of honors. Rather than shared investment in the common cause, there are relations of obedience towards superiors which escalate up. Order is maintained by the Will to Strive.
There were three identical bar tents, all set up right next to each other. By random sorting, two of the tents ended up with slightly more people. This caused crowds to form huge lines at the two tents while abandoning the third tent. The menus and products were the same.
But what was different was the perceived coolness of the tents, as measured by the herd behavior. The herd was clumping at the two other tents, so you have to be in with the ingroup and go to the long line because that's the cooler line.
The "Cathedral" (Synagogue) manages the West by manipulating this: it creates status gradients of coolness to manage the herd behavior of the ingroup.

NRx is implicitly Asian: govern via explicit hierarchies of status and obedience to formal power. That's why they move to Asia.
Now, a New York rave isn't a San Francisco house party. But it's similar in some respects. All these people, for the most part, are Eloi. They are unthreatened and undefended. There is no security. There are no threats. It's all held together by trust alone.
There are queers here. Why not? Queerness, in the environment, is simply existing in a strange way alongside all the other people existing, vibing, hanging out, having a good time. "So long as they're not hurting anyone". The only crime the space recognizes is aggression.
And what is the space for? Why are people here? What is the good time they're all having?

Frankly, it's not the drugs. It's not the music. It's not the dancing. It's not even sex.

It's the marshmallow test.
conradbastable.com/essays/escalat…
Bobos in paradise. The original bourgeois were civil. And what is civility? What are bourgeois norms? Essentially, they are about restraining your own base desires in order to exist in shared space and advance long term goals.

It's the marshmallow test.
But in the 1960s, the elite realized they didn't need to obey civility norms to keep themselves together. Against the bourgeois, you had the bohemian. The bohemian transgresses norms. The bohemian indulges temptations. The bohemian lives wildly.
What emerges from the bourgeois and the bohemian is neither. "Class X". The new upper middle class. The new elite. The bourgeois bohemian. The Bobos in Paradise.

And what is their pleasure? Having defied the norms of civility, they engage in bohemian behaviors bourgeoisly.
That is, they do that which would be transgressive and hedonistic without ever losing themselves. So much of the pleasure of drinking or drugs or any vice is the nature of it as a *vice*. As something sinful that causes the loss of control. Blacking out.
The point of the bourgeois bohemian is to remove the vice from vice. You are doing Molly... in moderation. You are summoning the corn demons to discuss the Q4 earnings reports. The real pleasure ceases to be the low grade pleasure of the denatured vice, but in *control*.
What they really get out of it is the superiority of being able to pass the marshmallow test through maximal temptation. To dehedonize every hedonism. To make a rave with scantily clad women a place where easily half the people are couples. To desensualize.
The bohemians of the 80s were afraid of the posers because the posers were ultimately the telos of bohemianism. The grim, unavoidable future that would swallow up their rebellion and repurpose it for the system, such that the Wall Street bankers would make a shrine to the punks.
This is post-civility. The Aella girl orgy is the ultimate in post-civility because it proposes to de-sexualize the orgy. To make it sterile, an exercise in shmexy times, fluffer charts and all.
And it goes beyond de-hedonizing the hedonistic. The Ordeal of Post-Civility is an advancement on the Ordeal of Civility. It is a project of deracination, to make from everyone the Silicon Man, the Money Man, the perfectly civil man.
Fundamentally, the Ordeal of Civility is about assimilation. The original Ordeal of Civility is about deracinating and assimilating into being civilized Anglos. But to be post-civil is to go one step beyond. It is to become so civil, so gentle, that one can be incivil civilly.
Ingroup bias is a *threat*. It is a threat of *implicit violence*. It harshes the vibes because the vibes of post-civility are about being Eloi in an non-aggression world, of being able to face ultimate temptation and vaporize it.
Burning Man is capitalism, capitalism is post-hedonism, post-hedonism is civility, civility is the marshmallow test, and all of it is WEIRD.

And this is the Western way of doing business. You want a networking thread?

This is the networking thread.
By default, business occurs in tribes. Ingroup networks. That's because you need trust. You need trust the other person can't screw you, and you need a basis to talk each other into deals. The only things that sell themselves are scams. For everything else, you need sales.
The Western way of business replaces the tribe with the synthetic tribe. The synthetic tribe is the "network". Working your way into a synthetic tribe or tribes is "networking". LinkedIn is not networking, because the signal is cheap. Nobody will risk anything for a "connection".
To network, you have to build rapport by demonstrating your costly allegiance to a tribe through non-free signaling behaviors. Burning Man is a tribe. Raves are a tribe. Golf is a tribe. Sports are a tribe. Frats are a tribe.

And how do frats work? Hazing.
But there is no such thing as a sexless orgy. You can't de-sex sex. Therein lies the rub of post-civility. That's why the rave is implicitly White. That's why post-civility is implicitly White.

And that's why we are going to post-post-civility.
4chan was born post-civil. The Twitter RW was born post-civil. These people are not "conservatives". They are people who drank the cup of the Blue tribe to the bottom and found it wanting. They have witnessed the death of post-civility.

You can't de-sex sex.
Imagine you dropped Indians into that environment, full of White women in stockings and black bikinis. Do you think the environment of respectful non-molestation would last? The Third Worlder sees this and sees hyper-sexualization rather than the pleasure of *de-sexualization*.
The Ordeal of Civility is intra-ethnic *precisely* because to triumph and pass through it is to overcome your ingroup bias. It is to become a Jew that can protest for Palestine on universalized grounds. It is to be capable of being an Anti-White White.
But this itself is not universal. Not every ethnicity really can have an Ordeal of Civility. I made a crude map. Who doesn't *need* an Ordeal of Civility? Northerly Whites. Hajnal-line Whites. They're genetically disposed to low ingroup bias.
The non-Hajnal Eurasian has to break themselves into universality, and not all of them make it. And the Orange? The "Brown belt" has a paper thin deception overlaid an ingroup bias that does not go away. Universalism is not universal. Universalism is an ethnic tendency.
It can't last. The Gods of the Copybook Headings will have the last laugh.

The Revenge of Reality.
But you can't go back either. What will come next is something new, something capable of surviving the internet age, the technological age, the media age, and thriving.

A new hardware for our all too new software.

This is a fascinating essay and a heartfelt personal journey about one man's personal battle with the Ordeal of Civility and the philosophy-cope of Freud. Nevertheless, the norms and manners of my class demand I defend Freud.

The Ordeal of Incivility and the Sports Jockman.
If civility is such a powerful social technology to facilitate bonding and keep society orderly, then why did it collapse? The author's answer is cowardice: the temptation to philosophize. Freud intellectualized his own discomfort with civility and his father, as a coward.
But Freud is just one man. Even extending this to Jews as a whole, they were a newly rising group. The same critique of the Jewish norm takeover applies to the Jewish power takeover. And the same answer is true here too: High class Anglos did not resist incivility at all.

Onwards and upwards. If the C in "The O.C." stands for Chinese, the O stands for Ostjuden. But the California Jew became something different entirely.

Who is the California surfer boy, and where did he come from?

He is Max Nordau's dream made flesh: The Muskeljude.
California history can be divided into the pre-war and post-war period, the war being WWII. In the pre-war, California was still being built up from a wild frontier.

To finish the story of "The O.C.", we have to start from the beginning.
California at the time of the Mexican-American war was largely empty, with only a few thousand Mexican ranchers and cowboys grazing the soil. That changed with the discovery of gold. The Gold Rush began, bringing the first wave of settlers to California.

I'm Chinese.

So far, I've talked a lot about Whites and Jews and a certain kind of Chinese experience, the KMT American. On paper, the average Asian lives less segregated than Hispanics or Blacks. But that stat hides the reality of a bifurcation.

The Chinatown Experience. Image
The Chinese in America can be separated into two main groups. One group lives in heavily White neighborhoods and is given the standard experience that entails, which I've gone into at length. The other lives in almost exclusively Chinese neighborhoods: The Chinatown.
In SoCal Chinatown, everything looks like this. Everyone speaks Chinese. A lot of people don't speak English. It's a sea of Asian faces. You may as well not be in America. Someone who grows up in here grows up under conditions of *Chinese ethnic homogeneity*.

A huge part of the confusion is that lifestyle and amenities are a terrible predictor of class in America. This pool, even today, is only 120k. Imagine it at 60k. Even a working family could have it if it was a priority and they financed it.

Neighborhoods are the key.
Most of the variance in housing cost comes from the neighborhood, which is to say the socioeconomic class of your neighbors. What you're buying is a peer group. Someone in a Manhattan 2br is higher class than a McMansion dweller in rural America, and prices reflect that.
The problem is that the media and our instincts code us to think of big house/nice stuff as rich and high class. This means the vast majority of the rich are ignorant of their wealth while average people overestimate their status.

Which is why I'd like to talk about "The OC".

This is a really key point: The American story. For a while, I've been playing around with a new concept of mine, metamodernity, under the understanding that modernity and postmodernity are both dead. Metamodernity is rooted in storytelling.
Modernity is the belief in a transcendent objective. It is the motivating impulse, born in the Renaissance, behind the Age of Science, the Age of Enlightenment, rationality-as-ethos, and many other things. It's basically dead, and Rationalists are a cult parodying it.
Modernity was killed by the Death of God. Without belief in "The God" (which can be many things, including Science), there can be no transcendent objective. Broadly, the Nietzschean Ubermensch is supposed to resurrect God by becoming God, the source of values.

So you've Studied Hard Mathematic 12 Hour and gone to Good College. What comes next?

Welcome to Arasaka. Your corporate orientation begins now.

I write this thread now despite the very real possibility it will be obsolete before the year is out. This is a time of unprecedented pressures on the corporate lifescript. AI is making entire rungs of junior personnel obsolete, and applications are at all-time highs.
If nothing else, take this as a snapshot and a historical artifact on a thing that was, if not a thing that will always be.

With that disclaimer out of the way, we begin. And like all beginnings, we begin at the beginning. Picking a career path.
