1/ The Russian government is planning for 2.6 million of its people to have fought in Ukraine by 2027, according to new projections for the draft state budget. It anticipates more than doubling monthly payments to veterans to 267 billion rubles ($2.78 billion) by 2027. ⬇️
2/ 'We Can Explain' reports that explanatory notes for the draft state budget indicate an increase in monthly payments to veterans from the current 120 billion rubles to 267 billion rubles. All veterans are entitled to 4,188 rubles ($43.71) a month, indexed to the inflation rate.
3/ There were already an estimated 540,000 veterans of the Ukraine war by June 2024. This is a significantly higher figure than the Finance Ministry had expected, so the 2024 budget expenditures had to be increased.
4/ According to Putin in December 2023, 617,000 people were then currently at the front and according to recent Wall Street Journal reports, an estimated 400,000 have been demobilised due to injuries. About 1 million people are thus currently eligible for veterans' pensions.
5/ The demobilised can already claim veterans' pensions. Their numbers are calculated to increase by about a million in 2025, reaching 1.5 million. By 2027, it is calculated that 2.6 million people will have served in the war (or about 4% of Russia's entire male population).
6/ As the figures indicate, the huge number of war veterans and war wounded is likely to put a strain on the Russian economy for decades to come, unless their pensions are cut drastically. The increase alone between 2024 and 2027 amounts to an extra $1.5 billion a month. /end
1/ Russia has accidentally bombed itself at least 128 times with aerial bombs since March 2024, according to figures compiled by ASTRA. The repeated incidents may indicate widespread problems with its bombs, aircraft and pilot training. ⬇️
2/ ASTRA reports that in the latest incident, a failed 500kg (1,100 lb) FAB-500 glide bomb was found in a field near the village of Neklyudovo in the Belgorod region, about 30 km from the Ukrainian border in the direction of Vovchansk (the probable target).
3/ According to ASTRA, this is at least the 128th aerial bomb that has fallen on Russia or Russian-occupied territory between March and October 2024, after Russia began fitting Soviet-era bombs with UMPK guidance kits to provide them with wings and satellite guidance.
1/ The ranks of Russia's super-rich are reported to have grown substantially during the war in Ukraine, with the number of billionaires growing by 53% and their collective wealth increasing by nearly 65%. At the same time, small businesses and pensioners are struggling. ⬇️
2/ The 'Chelyabinsk of the Future' Telegram channel reports that since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the number of Russian billionaires has increased from 88 to 135 (of whom 10 have moved abroad and renounced their Russian citizenship).
3/ The combined wealth of the billionaires has increased from $350 billion to $576.8 billion, a 64.8% growth. Not surprisingly, figures from the official state agency Rosstat show that the Gini coefficient, which shows the level of income inequality, has risen significantly.
1/ New Russian soldiers are still being given inadequate training to fight on the front lines in Ukraine and Kursk, according to Russian milbloggers. As one puts it, they are "unprepared, untrained people who are required to perform tasks almost like special forces". ⬇️
2/ The 'DShRG Rusich' Telegram channel says that the "stripes" (officers) "seriously think that 15 days of training is enough to train a stormtrooper, who will not only complete the task, but also return alive."
3/ "Although the latter, most likely, is of little importance to them – the main thing is to submit a report on time and draw an arrow on a piece of paper.
1/ Russian milbloggers complain that local Russian commanders are falsely claiming advances in eastern Ukraine. As a result, they say, Russian artillery and air power is not striking settlements that are in reality still held by Ukraine, causing unnecessary Russian casualties. ⬇️
2/ A few days ago, Russian pro-war Telegram channels reported that there had been "significant advances of the Russian Armed Forces near Siversk in recent days." The villages of Hryhorivka and Verkhnokamianske were said to have been captured and a foothold taken at Serebrianka.
3/ However, Russian milbloggers now admit that these claims were false. The 'Military Informant' channel says: "It is reported that the appearance of data on non-existent advancement was connected with manipulations of the local leadership, ...
1/ The Russian government's sudden ban on the Discord app is being criticised as disastrous by Russian milbloggers, due to its impact on the Russian military's battlefield command and control. "Everyone [is] back to the level of March 2022," one says. ⬇️
2/ Videos published by Russian military units, such as the one above, show them using the Discord instant messaging and VoIP platform to coordinate drone and artillery strikes. The abrupt decision by Russian regulator Roskomnadzor to ban Discord has blocked this for many units.
3/ Milblogger 'Troika' complains about the impact:
"At the control centres of dozens of compounds, broadcasts from drones operating through closed Discord rooms have dropped."
1/ A half-blind, crippled Russian soldier is reported to have been handcuffed in a pit, beaten, had his crutches broken, and sent to the front line after he appealed for help in a video. "The Russian army loves us all very much," he says in what may be his final message. ⬇️
2/ Stanislav Vitort signed a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defence in January 2024 and was sent to a Storm V stormtrooper unit in the 138th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade (military unit 02511).
3/ In March 2024, he was sent on his first combat mission, which ended in disaster. His column was destroyed and he received shrapnel wounds, a concussion, a brain injury and was practically blinded in one eye. His leg operation went wrong and left him dependent on crutches.
