A quick thread on Trump's Project 2025 thing that's been on my mind. It's not just Trump's agenda. It's the agenda of the entire @GOP. A small deep dive:
1. I want to focus very narrowly on the Financial regulation section because I've served on the committee of jurisdiction for 6 years. So much of the P2025 plan has already been introduced by @HouseGOP members. It's what they'd do if they controlled all 3 branches.
@HouseGOP 2. For example, P2025 says we should eliminate the Consumer Financial Protection Board (you know, so that businesses can abuse consumers more easily.) Image
@HouseGOP 3. Well, they've introduced a bill to do exactly that this term. congress.gov/bill/118th-con…Image
4. P2025 also suggests that the CFPB is unconstitutional based on a bogus* theory that unless your funds are Congressionally appropriated you can't exist. Image
5. Well, a bunch of senior members of the @GOP sent an amicus brief to the Supreme Court making exactly that point.

6. However, they have separately introduced a bill to legislatively defund the agency even as the courts decided not to. Again, virtually verbatim lifting from P2025. congress.gov/bill/118th-con…Image
7. P2025 would like to limit / eliminate the Federal Reserve's ability to act as a lender of last resort (e.g., when the economy is crashing, they don't want the Fed to be able to provide stability.) Insanely stupid idea. Image
8. Sure enough, the @HouseGOP had a whole hearing on this exact topic, bringing in so-called "experts" to help make the case. congress.gov/event/118th-co…
@HouseGOP 9. I could go on, and virtually everything in this thread has a bill, a hearing or at least a moment in a hearing where some member of the @HouseGOP made these arguments, more or less verbatim.
@HouseGOP 10. Which is to say that yes, despite all the trolls undoubtedly chiming in to say "Trump, that beacon of honesty has denied he is involved in this so he must not be", it's not just Trump. Heritage is the policy shop for the whole @GOP.
@HouseGOP @GOP 11. The only reason their crazy ideas haven't become law yet is because they haven't had full control of government but for a 2 year period from 2016 - 2018 when their incompetence interfered with their malevolence.
@HouseGOP @GOP 12. They will not be so incompetent next time. So if you find Project 2025 as scary as 96% of Americans do... make sure they don't control the White House, the House or Senate after November. VOTE. /fin

2. This makes intuitive sense. Whatever drove one to leave their home, their social network, their culture, their language and start a new life in the United States, the more precarious you are in that new life the less likely you are to do something that could send you back.

I promised I'd say more about this. We need to talk about the financial regulation portions Trump's Project 2025 and why they are inimical to capitalism, free markets and would destroy the US economy. Thread:
1. Prebuttal to everyone about to chime in with "Trump said he's not associated with it!" I don't know how to break this to you but Trump is a liar. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me 356,782 times, shame on me. It's his people writing policies for him. Move along.
2. First, you need to understand that our modern financial regulatory system was essentially created in response to crises. Banks, capital markets, etc. are always prone to abuses; insufficient deposits, lack of consumer protection, withholding information from investors, etc.

I am often critical of the @HouseGOP for their incompetence, absence of any abiding moral compass and hostility to democracy. But this week, they deserve praise for their nationwide message discipline during “anti-woke week”. Thread:
1. The floor agenda this week was dedicated to “anti-wokeism”. The purpose was to explain to the world why they support companies right to discriminate, ignore climate science and embrace bad governance - and own the media cycle. Did they ever. news.bgov.com/bloomberg-gove…
2. My first sense that this was a nationally coordinated program was when my little-known @GOP opponent used most of a media interview on Monday to double down on JD Vance’s racism, suggesting that she had personally seen “brown skinned people” eating pets.

Short thread about Arlington National Cemetery and official visits: Every year I've been in Congress, @RepCartwright has led a bipartisan trip to Arlington National Cemetery around Memorial Day.
ANC staff does a fantastic job taking us to a few graves, sharing their stories and valor. One year it was to the oldest WW1 vet and they read stories of his enlistment (he lied about his age) and secret to a long life "when you think you're about to die, don't".
This year, we visited graves of Gus Grissom, John Glenn and other early astronauts and learned about their lifetime of service to our country.

Trump’s Project 2025 has some VERY creepy surveillance ideas about women’s pregnancies. Read this passage carefully (from page 455 of their plan). Image
1. “Abortion surveillance” is not a thing - but they’d like it to be. The job of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is not to surveil. To suggest otherwise is some serious Orwellian creepiness.
2. Remember all those people saying that Dobbs just “returned abortion to the states”? It was always BS. It was always about taking women’s rights away. Describing those states as “sanctuaries for abortion tourism” is language you use if your goal is a national abortion ban.
