This is a Pfizer webinar on #LongCovid. The #1 candidate for the cause of #LongCovid is viral persistence. The presence of live virus, or fragments in tissue many months, to years later, after acute infection. Roger Paredes MD PhD

🧠"The invasion of SARS-CoV-2 or the systemic effects of infection triggers microglia and astrocytes to generate neuroinflammation, leading to the impairment of oligodendrocytes, ultimately causing neurodegeneration and disruption of synaptic function." 2/
"Potential damaged gut/intestinal barrier allowing commensal bacteria into the visceral tissues leading to an inflamed gut blood axis inflaming the Peyer patch." 3/
A recent study showed an extended risk of a major adverse cardiac event three years following a Covid infection. This is different from previous studies showing a tapering of risk over time. AB blood types showed an increased risk as well. Erica Spatz MD🧵 ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/AT…
People that have had Covid are more likely to develop almost any cardiac problem independent of age, race, gender or cardiovascular risk factors. Should a SARS- CoV-2 infection be formally recognized by the medical profession as a risk factor for heart attack? 2/5
SARS-CoV-2 can cause direct injury to cells that line the blood vessels. The virus can cause an incredible immunological response and an inflammatory response. A lot of what we are seeing is our own bodies immune response, this variation is different in each individual. 3/5
Anthony Fauci was the only one wearing a mask at his college reunion. 'I was fully aware that I was taking a risk taking my mask off, only expecting to be there a few minutes.' He got covid, and missed his daughter's wedding three days later. 📺1/4🧵
Trump, You're losing me trillions of $. Do we really need to have these masks on?
Fauci, It would be unforced error to take them off. I will not remove my mask. I must wear it.
Trump, Generals you guys take your mask off. Your commander in chief has spoken. The mask came off. 2/
What do you think will be the hopes for us with #LongCovid? There is an aberrant turning on of the immune system that isn't easily detectable. I hope that in the coming months to years we get our arms around it. 3/
Infection is best prevented, vaccination is the best protection against infectious diseases and their consequences. #LongCovid is real, and currently impacting 400 million people worldwide. The only way to prevent #LongCovid is not to get Covid at all. 🧵😷🙏
Despite high levels of immunity, despite repeated vaccinations, we are still losing 1,000 people a week to this disease. We don't know the long term consequences of repeat infections. Evidence exists that this virus can replicate in the brain. 2/
Evidence exists that SARS-CoV-2 can replicate in the gut. 3/
If you ask me what keeps me up at night, the UK biobank paper is up there, along with the next 2 papers.😷 TY @Daltmann10 for your refreshing honesty. 🧵 nature.com/articles/s4158…
An early paper from the NIH didn't just find virus in the lung and the gut, they found virus everywhere at autopsy. 2/4 nature.com/articles/s4158…
Lastly, a paper from Rockefeller University showed that antibodies from recovered patients were turning and maturing, many months later. They wanted to understand why. They did gut biopsies and found virus there as well. 3/4 nature.com/articles/s4158…
In 2020 a group of Dutch researchers were looking for genes that might increase the chances of dying from Covid. They found two siblings from 2 different families, four young men who were hospitalized for severe Covid.🧵1/7 jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/…
They found that the brothers lacked Toll Like Receptor 7. TLR 7 has the ability to recognize single stranded RNA, particularly useful for viruses like SARS-CoV-2. All of our cells have these toll-like receptors. 2/
Once a cell senses this nearby threat, it starts signaling for help from nearby immune cells, this molecule is called type 1 interferon or IFN-1. This also tells nearby cells to lock down and start their antiviral defenses. 3/
