This summer and autumn I've heard a repeated refrain from people who are trying to not join in the spread of Covid:

They've phased out contact with a large number of their old friends and family who refuse to acknowledge the situation.
They thought that things might have improved by now and that they would be able to resume the friendships where they had left off.
But they're realising that it's not going to change yet.

And a lot of people are sadly coming to a realisation that it's going to be very hard to forgive the people who have ignored covid.
It's going to be very hard to forgive the people who have ignored long covid.
It's just impossible to forget all they've done.
Because if 'covid ends', those people will have learnt nothing.
They will just be carrying all their covid damage and denial into whatever crisis comes next.
Nothing will change.
Some of them think the lessons of Covid for the next pandemic are:
Let it rip early
Don't vaccinate
Don't try to slow it down
Seriously.
So many people think that now.

They do.
Yes.
Their narratives are broken.
But how do we interact with these people who deny and ignore science?
Gently.
Kindly.
Firmly.
Carefully, because some of them are angry.
Carefully, because some of them are deluded.
But gently, kindly, firmly.
And maybe old friendships will one day be rekindled... but not before some serious healing has taken place.

I just had one of those moments of revelation when a penny drops...

One band of the older generation here, the 65s-75s, seem divided into two groups - ones that have had Covid a few times and are not doing well with it, and ones that have only had it a couple of times.
I hadn't been wrestling with why it was like that, after all, some people get sick more and assume less.
But every now and then I would look at them and puzzle.
Because the group that seemed to be catching it more often seemed to be (for lack of a better phrase) generally more working class.

But they weren't working, because they were retired.

READ THIS.
It's serious.
👀
"Reinfection was associated with milder symptoms but led to a higher incidence and severity of long COVID... the severity and incidence rate of long COVID increase significantly with the number of reinfections."
thelancet.com/journals/lanwp…
If you didn't understand that sentence...

The more times you catch covid, the more mild the infection may seem, but the more likely you are to have lasting health problems like extreme fatigue, brain problems and the rest.
FFS.
How many more of these studies are people going to ignore?

This is going to be a messy complicated thread...

...but there are several massive hurdles in the paths of most people that prevent them accepting that Covid infections are responsible for the rising flood of ill health including things like heart attacks and mental illness.
All of the hurdles are interlinked and tangled - so there's not really a logical flow through a list of bullet points.

This is going to be rambly, and jump from point to point, and it's going to be painful.
Let's start off with the guilt because it's one of the most powerful emotions.

Think of this in terms of the harm done:

When I hear that someone over 60 'has had a fall' my first question now is to ask whether they had the bug that's going round.
Nine out of ten times, family members say yes.

Covid infection causes falls for older people.
And younger people too, the difference is that the younger they are the more likely they are to bounce.
Unless their musculoskeletal system has also been damaged by covid, and it can do that too.
Dizziness, breathlessness, confusion, proprioception issues, disorientation, muscle weakness, joint stiffness, neural issues, fatigue, dehydration, low blood pressure, impaired balance, blurred vision, low blood sugar, fainting, tachycardia, impaired judgement...

Again, this is one of those weird weeks when suddenly there is a massive flood of Covid cases locally.

It hasn't let up here in the last ten days. Ping ping ping.

Loads of people are feeling absolutely awful with it, and lots of them are testing for themselves.
And testing positive.
I know as many people sick with Covid now as at any single point in the pandemic.

Other months have had more than this month, with a string of high weeks, but there hasn't been a single week with more than this here.

I regularly see people, apparently people who would be otherwise considered intelligent, saying things like, "you just want us all in lockdown forever" or "are you going to mask forever?" or something else that also fails to understand the situation.

Here's what I want:
First, I want people to take some time and effort to educate themselves about the effects of Covid infections.
I have provided risk assessment services for billion dollar companies, and the first part of risk assessment is facing the problems and potential problems.
