Large protests today (7/30/23) in the capital of Niger (Niamey) in support of the recent military takeover. AP reports that demonstrators were also “forcefully denouncing former colonial power France.”
The protest gathered in front of the French embassy as well. There are reports that parts of the embassy were set on fire.
Some photos from the action. You can see both France specifically and foreign military bases (which include a U.S. drone base) are being denounced.
Hesitant to say too much about the Niger coup yet other than it shows similarities to events in Mali and Burkina Faso, where anger over insurgencies, poverty & neocolonialism resulted in governmental overthrows. aljazeera.com/news/liveblog/…
some people have taken to the streets in the capital Niamey to protest in favor of the coup, denouncing France with some praise of Russia whose profile as a development/security partner has grown in the region.
That being said though, there have also been protests against the coup, so some caution also in order in terms of how we analyze these things.
Quickly developing situation in Sudan currently. Two-wings of the coup government that seized power in late 2021 are clashing in what appears to be a power struggle. Fighting happening in several cities including the capital of Khartoum. aljazeera.com/amp/news/liveb…
These events are taking place during a complex period where multiple actors are trying to set-up post-coup governments with visions ranging from an elite-driven status quo, to a “civil state” focused on wealth redistribution & formal democracy. Context: liberationnews.org/sudanese-resis…
While we wait to know enough to make a deeper analysis. Here is a thread I did from a couple months ago for additional context.
Ethiopia could grow 7.5% FY 23. This upward growth trajectory is exactly why 🇪🇹 needs serious debt relief now. Debt is inhibiting the ability of growth to drive development and poverty alleviation. A 🧵 on how 🇺🇸 can help 🇪🇹 at no cost to US taxpayers. ena.et/en/?p=42431
The 🇺🇸 could simply allocate $3.4 billion in Special Drawing Rights to 🇪🇹. This covers the rough cost of all Ethiopian loan payments in calendar year 2023. 🇺🇸 has $91.3 billion SDR’s to spare, and, again, this is at no additional cost to US taxpayers.
To explain a bit more. SDRs are a special IMF currency that can be traded for hard currency and play an important role in supporting developing nations balance sheets without shackling them with debt. data.one.org/data-dives/sdr/
Reports are that Congolese forces have used airstrikes and artillery extensively to regain positions. The “peacekeepers” of the EAC remain unwilling to engage M23, continuing the speculation they are there to undermine not secure Congolese sovereignty. politico.cd/la-rdc-a-la-un…
So far the most shared statement from the Pope: “Africa is not a mine to be exploited or a soil to be plundered.”
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko is undertaking his first visit to sub-Saharan Africa this week to strengthen budding ties with Zimbabwe. In particular the two countries are collaborating on various initiatives surrounding agriculture in 🇿🇼
The trip is set to build on the $350 million in deals (some ongoing, some stalled) signed between the two nations three years ago. In addition to agriculture, mining, manufacturing, infrastructure and energy deals are set to be discussed. herald.co.zw/zimbabwe-belar…
Probably the biggest area of cooperation so far is tractors. Thousands of which are being imported by 🇿🇼 to meet the demand from the agricultural sector that has expanded due to land reform. thezimbabwemail.com/farming-enviro…
