Large protests today (7/30/23) in the capital of Niger (Niamey) in support of the recent military takeover. AP reports that demonstrators were also “forcefully denouncing former colonial power France.” The protest gathered in front of the French embassy as well. There are reports that parts of the embassy were set on fire.

Hesitant to say too much about the Niger coup yet other than it shows similarities to events in Mali and Burkina Faso, where anger over insurgencies, poverty & neocolonialism resulted in governmental overthrows. aljazeera.com/news/liveblog/… some people have taken to the streets in the capital Niamey to protest in favor of the coup, denouncing France with some praise of Russia whose profile as a development/security partner has grown in the region.

Quickly developing situation in Sudan currently. Two-wings of the coup government that seized power in late 2021 are clashing in what appears to be a power struggle. As the Pope begins his visit to DRC today, the Congolese military has launched counterattacks in its conflict with the Rwandan-backed M23 rebels. Reports are that Congolese forces have used airstrikes and artillery extensively to regain positions. Millions of Venezuelans are involved in collective, participatory structures & processes as a part of the 🇻🇪 transition to socialism. The national mobilization in DRC against the rebel group M23 continues as fighting is ongoing both north and south of the key Eastern city of Goma. These recruits are on their way to Kinshasa for more training. In addition to mobilizing to fight, residents of the Goma area are also gathering supplies in support of the troops fighting M23.
