In my most compassionate listening, I hear the folks who oppose genocide but are voting Harris as seeking to unite the center & the left in an effort to defeat fascism. There are problems with this: 🧵
This imagines that fascism is emerging only from a Trump camp. It does not recognize how the mobilization of state violence, identity politics, the disregard of law/accountability, rejection of “truth”, media censorship,& normalization of genocide stems from the Dems now.
It also forgets that in 2020, this was the same impulse that united the left with the Dems to defeat Trump. The compromise then was dropping abolition as a serious social and political priority.
With it, dropped a critique of how securitizing borders, neighborhoods, and ppl served to protect an economic & political elite that continued to accumulate and hoard resources through dispossession. The party has since platformed police and delivered genocide.
Aside from a shared commitment to settler militarism & racism, genocide has fueled an American war economy & its role as global superpower by incapacitating multilateral mechanisms. The U.S. has undermined democracy domestically and internationally.
Genocide has also obscured climate catastrophe and ecocide that - like fascists who reject science - also rejects the science demonstrating the irreparable harm of warmaking by toxic weapons on our environment.
And like fascists who reject experts and truth, the core of the Democratic Party, rejects expertise on the Middle East insisting instead that genocide in Gaza, indiscriminate bombing in Lebanon, and the threat of a nuclear war with Iran, is a “rationale” policy option.
Yes we must unite to defeat fascism. But the question is, with whom? Certainly with one another, which is why fissures among the anti-genocide camp at the seams of an upcoming election is so harmful.
Anti-fascists have to work together. We don’t have to like one another but we need to be able to work with one another. And we need to be developing a frontline regardless of 11/5 outcome, bc the threat is already here.
Note that courts are already inaccessible to many communities in the South and that SCOTUS is already stacked. Note that the Roe is already eviscerated, it has now returned to a state prerogative. Protecting reproductive rights rn means creating means of access…those have not
Been provided or promised. EPA regulations have been eviscerated and not reinstated…catastrophe is here but bc it has not been generalized or sensationalized, folks are confronting it. We should already be organizing in crisis-mode. Stop pointing fingers at folks who won’t vote
… for their own genocide as the source of harm. We’re in it. And to all of us who have agitated against genocide, we cannot act like fault lines in this election are the ones that divide or unite us.

I appreciate Mehdi & disagree at least on latter 2 of 3 points.
Re: accountability. First I think the more accurate example is 2004 & the reelection of Bush after invading Iraq. We shouldve voted him out & failed again when Obama pardoned the entire leadership for unity #Thread
Together this has created an imperial amnesia where no one learns anything- my students dont know about the war on Iraq let alone how it constitutes the crime of aggression for which no one has been held to account. It also makes plain both parties are the problem.
Which is connected to point 3: things will be worse. I keep wondering how it is we can expect things to be even semi-normal as we perpetuate a genocide? Is this some form of privilege we feel we’re entitled to within the metropole? Ofc, things are not normal, ofc we are in crisis
The WH response to Nasrallah's assassination is dismal. It reflects 2 decades of altering laws of war in the "GWOT." The outcome is to apply laws of war only among Western powers & apply what reads like just war theory to the unruly Global South #Thread
To regard Nasrallah’s assassination as “a measure of justice” evacuates Lebanese from the category of the civilian & deprives Lebanon any measure of sovereignty. Neighborhoods have been levelled, humans turned into landmines in the middle of civilian centers…
The equivalent would be to raze Tel Aviv bc it is home to an urban military base. Or attack Israeli reservists & idle combatants in their homes w their families. It would be the flattening of the north to prevent civilian life in the name of deterrence.
We are so tired. After 11 months of a live-streamed genocide w advanced weapons shipped from global superpower w 0 impunity, Israel began an assault on Lebanon through a terrorist attack blowing up humans, non-combatants, that blinded & mutilated 1000s. #Thread
I witnessed social media streams celebrating this as a victory – fantasizing that the attack cleanly targeted “terrorists” – completely oblivious &/or unconcerned that the targets were medics & other noncombatants...
that the “precision strikes” turned humans into land mines in the middle of civilian centers- that nothing has been left sacred.
I wish @AchilleMbembe1 also did more reading 2 understand Hamas-not as fascist, messianic boogeyman- but as part of a Palestinian national fabric. The refusal to study Palestinian knowledge production while feigning expertise about them is also quite colonial. Short list follows:
In respect to the Green Party’s request to refrain from sharing more before their announcement this eve, I did not share more. Now I can. The Party is solid on Palestine but we disagreed on how to intervene politically in this moment. #Thread
I offered to join ticket if they would be willing to concede the election if Dems deliver on permanent ceasefire and arms embargo. The idea being using Stein’s margin in 3 swing states to compel those concessions.
If we truly believe the Dems would never concede, then there is nothing to lose. It also makes clear to those eager to throw Palestinians, Arab Americans, and American Muslims under the bus that if they lose to Trump, they are the source of their own loss.
Jill Stein’s team approached me to run as her vice-presidential candidate, & I am seriously considering it. The Harris team is demanding our votes to “save our democracy” but has been oblivious to the fact that supporting a #genocide poses the most significant threat to it 🧵
The United States is sending weapons to Israel in violation of US law, including the Leahy Amendment & Section 620I of the Foreign Assistance Act on the delivery of humanitarian aid to say nothing of intl law including recent ICJ decisions & the ICC request for arrest warrants.
More, polls have consistently shown disapproval of Biden’s handling of the war & most recently, a Gallup poll showed that 55 percent of all Americans disapprove of Israel’s military action.
