The issue of overtourism came up while we were in Como.
The guy running the boat trips talked about Como becoming a ‘destination’ in recent years, mainly because of social media. You might think this is good: boat man earns €€ from tourists like me taking his boat trip! But…
…it’s now harder for him to find somewhere to rent, because lots of properties have been bought up by AirBnB hosts, or second-home owners. He also now struggles to afford parking in the town. The bars&restaurants are now more expensive.
The infrastructure isn’t ready for so many more people. The funicular railway had hour-long queues when we went, and this was the tail end of the season! Boat trips also had endless queues. It gets busier each year. He said the council doesn’t really know how to deal with it.
I felt bad for adding to this, but I do think not flying is part of the solution. It takes longer and costs more, therefore you do it less. I can still go to ‘tourist’ places, but not at the rate that becomes problematic. Cheap flights have pushed things in the wrong direction.
