1/ Four men who are accused of murdering 'Donbass Cowboy' Russell Bentley, by torturing him to death and then blowing up his body with a block of TNT, reportedly want to evade being tried for murder by volunteering to go back to fighting in Ukraine. ⬇️
3/ Three soldiers – Vitaly Vansyatsky, Vladislav Agaltsev, and Andrey Iordanov – are accused of the murder and of blowing the body up with a block of TNT inside a VAZ 2115 car, while a fourth, Vladimir Bazhin, is accused of having disposed of the remains on Vansyatsky's orders.

4/ They have been charged with three offences under Russian law, namely abuse of power resulting in death, the use of physical violence and torture with desecration of the body, and concealment of a crime. If convicted, they would receive a substantial prison sentence.
5/ However, on 2 October 2024, Vladimir Putin signed a new law that allows defendants in cases that have already been investigated and referred to court to sign a contract to participate in the war in Ukraine.
6/ Russia has burned through a huge number of convicts in its war but doesn't want to carry out a full mobilisation due to the political risks involved. It's pursuing what's been called a 'crypto-mobilisation' instead, by trying to find new sources of manpower for the war effort.
7/ One method is by mobilising accused defendants (who, it should be noted, have not been convicted of anything). This is a more attractive prospect that it might seem because of the atrocious conditions in Russian prisons and the near-certainty of convictions.
8/ However, victims and their relatives have expressed opposition to the new law. Russian Human Rights Council member Eva Merkacheva says that if cases are aborted because defendants have been sent to the war, "the truth in the case will not be established."
9/ She says that victims will consider their rights not restored and expresses concern that an investigation "may become negligent in its work, because then why carefully collect evidence?"
10/ Bentley's widow Lyudmilla has expressed similar concerns and opposes the four men being allowed to go back to the war. "So what happens?", she asks. "Killed, caught (good if caught), convicted and sent back to the front?"
11/ "This will give them a feeling of permissiveness and will lead to them shedding more innocent blood! This will set a bad example and a feeling of permissiveness for others who are quietly watching the outcome of this case! It should not be like this.
12/ "And what? Will they be given weapons again? Will they again dislike someone, and will they again kill someone innocent with this feeling of permissiveness? This cannot be allowed!
13/ "Now I am thinking not only about myself, but about their new possible victims in the future, if the court decides to give them the opportunity to return. Therefore, I urge the court not to allow this!"
14/ She has urged the Donetsk Garrison Military Court to impose "the harshest punishment" and says: "The whole world is waiting for punishment! Tens of thousands of people from different countries are waiting for justice." /end
1/ A Russian soldier who is being hunted for killing 11 of his comrades is reportedly a habitual drunkard, thief, and wife-beater who was recruited from a prison colony. It's likely that the massacre was the outcome of a drunken quarrel between the men. ⬇️
2/ Maksim Fedorchenko is reported to have called his wife Svetlana Golovtsova after carrying out the massacre during the night of 26 October and confessed to the killings. He is said to have thrown a grenade and opened fire on the men, who all died on the spot.
3/ He had also called the previous day and told his wife that "he had given money to his fellow soldier and fellow countryman with the call sign "Stary" so that he could go to the store for some booze."
1/ Ukrainians conscripted into the Russian army are used "all for meat," denied leave, forced to rely on the black market for supplies and to buy vehicles with their own money, and are sent into "meat storms" where large numbers are killed, according to a Russian commentary. ⬇️
2/ The Russian 'Philologist in Ambush' Telegram channel, which is pro-war but often critical of the way it's being fought, has published a description from a source in the forces of the 'Luhansk People's Militia' – now part of the Russian Army – on the situation there:
3/ "Thank you for highlighting the issue of the wounded and the untreated. For the butchers, the 7th Luhansk brigade is generally giving the locals [i.e. men from the Luhansk region] a hard time, both commanders and soldiers.
1/ Despite saying earlier that there were no casualties in yesterday's attack on the Vladimir Putin Special Forces University in Chechnya, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov now says that Ukrainian POWs were killed there and are being held as human shields at every strategic site. ⬇️
2/ On his own Telegram channel, Kadyrov says:
"As I said earlier, there were no casualties on our side as a result of the attack. BUT! There are casualties among Ukrainian prisoners.
3/ "Up to 10 Ukrainian prisoners are being held at every strategic facility in the republic, including on the territory of the [Special Forces University]. Kyiv, trying to harm us, today killed its own soldiers.
1/ Camouflage nets made by volunteers for use on the front lines are reported to have appeared on construction sites across Russia, likely as a result of corrupt military personnel selling them to construction firms. There is said to be a shortage of nets on the front lines. ⬇️
2/ The 'Reporter Shturmovik' Telegram channel (Grigory Kubatyan) highlights a building in Magadan in Siberia: "It is currently being renovated, so the house is covered with a camouflage net. If you look closely, you can see that this net was made for military purposes."
3/ "Women all over the country weave these for free. They gather in schools, libraries, churches. And they weave, sparing no hands, sometimes young, but often old, with sore joints.
1/ This morning's Ukrainian drone attack on the Vladimir Putin Russian Special Forces University in Chechnya is reported to have set the facility's main building on fire, potentially causing serious damage. ⬇️
2/ The Russian outlet Agency. News reports that despite Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov's claim that an "empty building" had been struck, in reality the target was the main building. As Agency reports:
3/ "Kadyrov said that a drone had attacked an "empty building" on the university grounds at 6:30 a.m. As a result, the roof caught fire. According to him, there were no casualties and the fire was extinguished.
