It's really difficult to pause, and reflect when we are consumed with fear and anxiety. Contemplating our "shadow" in the Carl Jungian sense is a higher level of consciousness....it requires us to engage our prefrontal cortex.
Fear and anxiety keep the amygdala engaged in overdrive.....which hijacks the prefrontal cortex.
The more scared and anxious we are, the more self-preservational we become.

Exposure to chronic stress and fear literally rewires our brains to become rewired, and to become disproportionately reactive to stress/anxiety/fear…

At the most extreme levels, self-preservation presents in ways that are similar to Cluster B Personality Disorders:
We become consumed with the self (narcissism) to the point of recklessly disregarding others (sociopathy)....it becomes a Darwinian, dog-eat-dog, law of the jungle mentality.

This is why Cluster B disordered leaders are so toxic, and so dangerously divisive:
1) They create an environment where they draw out pathological behavior in people who otherwise weren't pathological.....(this includes their supporters......as well as those who oppose them, and who now feel compelled to self preserve...and oppose the disordered leader by any means necessary)....

The key is that the authoritarian demagogues keep people in a state of perpetual fear, and anger.....because if they can do so....
1) Their followers will do their bidding for them.
.....and.....
2) The opposition (resisters/Never Trump) will often engage/retaliate in a way that creates the perception of confirmation of the demagogues fear, or anger, inducing rhetoric.....which creates a self-reinforcing cycle of hatred/conflict between the divided groups/nation.
This is how they stay in power.

The reciprocal, self-perpetuating event/action doesn't have to be proportionate, or even a reality.....it just has to occur.
As we have seen over the years, there is an asymmetry when it comes to Trump, and political rhetoric. Trump can say 1,000 inciting comments, but it only takes one comment from the Left to fuel the narratives....and the division.
Biden's recent comment about "garbage" is the most recent example. There were six hours of egregious, divisive, racist rhetoric at Trump's rally.......and the focus has been on Biden's response to the rally.
