One of my students was just assaulted on his way to yeshiva. A black man in his 40s smacked him across the face for no reason other than hate.
Thankfully, he got away before anything else happened.
What makes most angry about this?
I told him we needed to file a police report; he mentioned that a couple of blocks later he saw an NYPD car but never even thought of stopping to tell them.
Why?
“What are they gonna do? Even if they catch him, it’s not like anything’s gonna happen to him, he won’t go to jail”
That’s what is driving me mad.
You have kids who are 13 or 14 and have grown up with the attitude of “if you get assaulted in the street, just take it because nothing is gonna be done.”
Those are the symptoms not of a sick but of a dead and decaying society.
If there is no drastic change where all those who have contributed to this climate are shown the door, and law and justice are re-established, there is simply no future here or anywhere with that kind of environment.
Moving out will be the only option.

I don’t scoff at people’s experiences in general, but I have to say that if you sleep with four dogs in your bed and wake up one night with claw marks all over your side, your initial assumption should probably be that one of the dogs did it versus, you know, a demon.
Then the next route would probably be to investigate if you have REM sleep disorder, or if the wife sleeping your bed does.
Either way, if you want to say something like that and be considered credible by people, having documented the marks to show the word would go a long way.
And, finally, before jumping to the demon conclusion, I’d probably suggest consulting a professional and see whether you are not in the throes of a mental health crisis.
If after all that it comes out you woke up with unexplained claws marks, sure.
1) I have no interest getting into any political discussion, nor into modern issues related to gender, LGBTQ+ issues or anything of the sort. This is only about correcting the egregious lies posted by antisemites about the Torah, Talmud, and Judaism as a whole.
2) I have already written long threads about this, and they cover far more than what I'll be covering here. I will link them at the very end for those who are interested. However, it's been over 2 years and this topic needs a refresher.
Scolding the youth, telling them “we tried to instill in you [things detached from Judaism], but we did not intend for you to [be detached from Judaism]” isn’t gonna be successful.
If you tell a kid kosher just means ethical eating, don’t be surprised when he becomes a vegan.
You told them that what mattered most was social justice, humanism, activism, and the brotherhood of man. And social justice told them Jews are white privileged colonizers who oppress the indigenous Palestinians in a land that doesn’t belong to them.
And now you’re appalled?
None of them were taught Judaism, and you expect them to be Jews? To uphold authentic Jewish values? To live authentic Jewish lives?
When you divorce all of Judaism from G-d, this is what you are left with. A confused generation who thinks Tikkun Olam means the destroy of Israel
On Shabbat I read a small piece of Torah that absolutely set me on fire. It is mind-blowing in its simplicity and elegance, and completely reframes your view of a Biblical narrative in a way you can’t comprehend how it’s not how you’ve always seen it.
A short thread:
One of the most puzzling questions in all of Bereshit is simply:
What is Yitshak’s deal when it comes to Esav?
By all accounts, he seems to have a pretty rotten behavior, attempts to trick his father by pretending to be pious, etc.
Yet, Yitshak never relents. Why?
There’s a few classical explanations, such as Esav genuinely fooling him, but this one rejected by almost everyone. Others that it’s pure favoritism. Also easy to reject.
The consensus seems to gel more or less around “Well, he’s aware of his behavior but sees potential in him”
