That Day When the Lord Redeems His Bride
Earlier last week in our discussion of Hosea, we looked at the end of chapter 2 where all of creation was waiting for “that day.” This was when God’s people would come to their senses and return to Him from their ways of prostitution. Today we will look at all of chapter 3, which
is very short (only 5 verses).
In this brief chapter, the Lord once again uses the lives of Hosea and Gomer to prophetically illustrate what He is going to do when (not if) that day actually arrives. Take note of how He tells Hosea to redeem Gomer… He tells him to go and shower
her with love even though she is still committing adultery on him. So Hosea does this by purchasing her back from her other clients. Once he has purchased her (and gotten her attention), he tells her that for her services she simply must stay in his house and stop what she has
been doing for a long time. As her service (or works) to earn her pay, he requires her to do nothing but to stay in his house as his wife. She is not to have sex with anyone during this time, not even with him.
Think for a moment about how this is a picture of how the Lord
redeems us. He first gets our attention so that we understand how He has purchased us. Then as our works to earn what He has paid for us, He requires that we simply come and be with Him and do nothing except to dwell with Him. In the case of Hosea, imagine the impact this had in
the mind of Gomer. This would be an incredible type of love that she had never before known. Also, just imagine what was probably going on in the minds of the other people (especially the men) as they watched from the community what was going on with this family.
They didn’t
understand it, but they were watching a precursor of how the Lord was going to offer redemption to the whole world (including to them) through the power of an amazing love that never fails.
Now let’s see this tender story as described in Hosea chapter 3:
Hosea’s Wife Is Redeemed
1 Then the Lord said to me, “Go and love your wife again, even though she commits adultery with another lover. This will illustrate that the Lord still loves Israel, even though the people have turned to other gods and love to worship them.”
2 So I bought her back for fifteen pieces of silver and five bushels of barley and a measure of wine. 3 Then I said to her, “You must live in my house for many days and stop your prostitution. During this time, you will not have sexual relations with anyone, not even with me.”
4 This shows that Israel will go a long time without a king or prince, and without sacrifices, sacred pillars, priests, or even idols! 5 But afterward the people will return and devote themselves to the Lord their God and to David’s descendant, their king. In the last days,
they will tremble in awe of the Lord and of his goodness. - Hosea 3:1-5

The True Source of Our Power Today
It is not by our own ability (our pride), strength or understanding, but by the Spirit of the Lord (humble surrender) that we do all powerful things to the glory of God!
4 Then I asked the angel, “What are these, my lord? What do they mean?” 5 “Don’t you know?” the angel asked.
“No, my lord,” I replied. 6 Then he said to me, “This is what the Lord says to Zerubbabel: It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 7 Nothing, not even a mighty mountain, will stand in Zerubbabel’s way; it will become a level plain

It is God Who Sets up Kings and Removes Kings
On this last day of early voting before Election Day, I have a special word that the Lord initially placed on my heart this past weekend. It’s a word about how in the end it is the Lord who selects and equips kings and leaders. It is also Him who removes them. This is also a word
that is very personal for you and for me, the regular Christ follower or disciple.
The basic theme of this message comes from Daniel 2:20-23 when Daniel had just been told the mystery of the king’s dream (without even knowing what the actual dream was). After being told this by

The Real Way to Fix Climate Change
This is actually a continuation of our recent study of the book of Hosea. Now you may be asking “What does Hosea’s message have to do with climate change?” This is actually the theme that the Lord placed on my heart as I awoke this morning and read the next section of the second
chapter. You see in previous devotionals we saw how God’s love for Israel was much stronger than her unfaithfulness towards Him. He is patient and faithful even when she is not. God said that eventually she will come to her senses, come back to Him and know Him as Lord.
In yesterday’s devotional message, we went through a high-level overview of the book of Hosea. In the first chapter, the LORD uses the life of Hosea and his family to illustrate a graphic picture of Israel and her unfaithfulness to God. But as I mentioned, it is a picture of the
entire history of the nation, including the way the Lord eventually redeems and restores His unfaithful wife.
Today we will see a glance of that restoration in our scriptures from the second half of Hosea chapter 2. Here, the LORD speaks through His prophet describing how He

The Worst Type of Prostitution and Infidelity
This has been a long night as I struggled to sleep while also pondering the events that are developing all around us today in our country. You see, it is becoming more and more evident every day that there are incredible levels of corruption and shear evil that have permeated the
highest levels of our society (we have only begun to see just how wide and deep it really is). Yet, instead of outrage and shock, the response by a huge portion of our population is one of ambivalence, acceptance, or even worse a response of further embracing what is being

Understanding Grace and Mercy from Two Perspectives
A true and deep understanding of these two well-used terms (grace and mercy) can give great power to the spiritual lives of all Christians.
From the perspective of God, they are both founded on how great His love (agape) is for us. Grace is when He showers on us precious gifts
that we don’t and could never deserve or earn. Picture a new-born baby with its earthly parents. The parents shower unending and unconditional love on that baby when at that time in its life, there is nothing the baby can do to truly earn that love except just “being their baby”.
