DEAR STARTUP FOUNDERS

The election is over. The future has been secured.

But the people who wanted to put Elon in jail, restrict for your AI model, keep funneling government contracts to the usual suspects, and more have one last trick:

They’re going to ask you for a job.

1/
This happens EVERY CYCLE. But this time, I propose, it is different.

No administration has been SO HOSTILE to growth as the one now leaving power.

And so, in the coming weeks, you must keep your guard up.

HERE’S THE GAME PLAN:

2/
Normally I wouldn’t be so aggressive, but the Biden-Harris Administration just spent four years ...

- threatening to nationalize SpaceX
- using social media co’s as a cutout for restricting the first amendment
- threatening to tax unrealized gains

3/
Now you might say “oh Josh why are you such a spoil sport, that’s not very nice, they were just mid level staffers doing their jobs!”

To be blunt: those who did not resign is therefore responsible for this anti-technology crusade.

And I need you to act accordingly.

4/
Allow me to ALSO say that THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH A POLITICAL PARTY.

It’s about the actions of a discrete group of people.

And asking yourself “might there be a skill mismatch” between people who have a demonstrated track record of undermining the tech industry.

5/
So. Here’s what’s about to happen:

Over the next few weeks, you’re going to start getting emails.

Maybe from appointees in offices you’ve dealt with. Maybe through intermediaries.

THEY WILL NOT ASK YOU FOR A JOB TO BEGIN WITH.

Instead, it’ll be innocuous.

6/
You might be star-struck, grateful, or interested. But you need to also be wary..

I don’t begrudge people for wanting to put food on the table for their families.

But I resent a thief returning to his victim in the morning and offer “protection.”

And that’s what this is.

7/
They will name-drop, talk too fast about “how things work,” speak in acronyms, and more.

“Let’s continue the conversation!”

My recommendation?

Take notes on what they say. And later, boot up your favorite AI model and have a conversation. You’ll learn more.

8/
There are plenty of competent people on both sides of the aisle who can help you navigate Washington. But at a certain point we have to come together and make a choice about whether we are going to reward extortion.

I say no.

9/
Whether it is someone who wants to “stand up your policy team,” or join as a government sales person, or “do some project based consulting,” I recommend just taking a step back and breathe.

Because the latest AI models are excellent at this sort of thing.

10/
Ultimately this is about holding people accountable for bad behavior — which is something I encourage in all scenarios — and making sure that you are bringing on new team members who SHARE the vision of an abundant American century.

The choice is yours.

/end
YOU. Yeah, you.

You read to the end. So help me spread the word. We can’t let these folks win. There need to be professional consequences.

Retweet the top tweet in the thread, below.

You’ll thank me later.
Ok you stayed for the post-credits scene. Excellent.

I’m gonna give you some operational tools to help you through these awkward moments.

So: a Marxist (Harris/Biden staffer) has just asked you to “continue the conversation,” about paying them.

HERES HOW YOU HANDLE:
“Hey, thanks. We’re still thinking through this internally, and need to figure that out before deciding on a way forward.”

“Appreciate the offer. We’re focused elsewhere at the moment but will ping you once we pull our head up.”

“Thank you! Probably not a fit right now but I expect we will revisit in Q3.”
To be clear. The people who are going to try to latch on to your company, inject it with DEI, steer it towards Marxism, etc will have resumes with “White House,” “Department of Defense/Energy/Homeland Security,” etc.

They’ll have titles like “Special Assistant to” and “Senior Advisor to,” as well as “deputy assistant secretary” or the like.

On first press, they may say something like “I was a schedule C,” when asked if they were political appointees.

SCHEDULED C MEANS POLITICAL.

They may also say things like “HQE” or “SGE” or “IPA.”

THESE ALSO MEAN POLITICAL.

In short: IF THERE LOOKING FOR A JOB IT MEANS THEY ARE POLITICAL.

99% of people have NO IDEA what a "recess appointment" is, or why it is CRITICAL to a President being able to govern.

TIME FOR ANOTHER LESSON IN HOW WASHINGTON WORKS:

1/
Article II, Section 2, Clause 3:

"The President shall have Power to fill up all Vacancies that may happen during the Recess of the Senate, by granting Commissions which shall expire at the End of their next Session."

This is (1) useful, and (2) a FORCING FUNCTION

2/
In recent times, however, Senate leadership has PREVENTED the use of recess appointments by using "pro forma sessions."

While everybody is out of town, one Senator stays behind, and gavels a brief "session," thus blocking this presidential power.

CRAZY.

THE K STREET PROJECT

Or: What a 1994 effort by Tom DeLay to level the playing field might tell us about the second Trump Administration in Washington, DC.

1/
The year is 1994.

Republicans re-took the House of Representatives for the first time in FORTY YEARS.

A Congressman from Texas by the name of Tom DeLay – who would go on to earn the nickname "THE HAMMER" – becomes Majority Whip.

And decides to send a message to DC.

2/
It had been FORTY YEARS since Republicans had meaningful power in Washington; the private sector had adapted.

Without leverage, few GOP Staffers got lobbying gigs – those went almost exclusively to Democrats. Same with in-house "policy advisor" jobs at major corporations.

Conservatives are sleeping on the fact that @elonmusk is out building a competitor to Data Trust.

My guess is that, come November 5th, @America PAC will have one of the best "voter files" in all of politics.

And it's going to cause political tectonic plates to shift.

1/
I'm no political consultant, so this might be completely wrong, but from everything I have read "voter files" are the lifeblood of elections.

Campaigns spend MILLIONS to figure out who is in their districts, where they live, what they care about, etc.

2/
And on the right, there were only two groups that had them: the GOP, and the Koch network.

Until – again, guessing here – now.

Have you looked at the @America PAC signup?

- Email
- Phone number

GEE WHAT COULD THIS BE USED FOR...

(PS I think it's great)

As @EzraACohen pointed out (tweet below), the “goodbye tours” are underway.

But what does that mean?

Usually when a presidential administration is “over” (defacto or dejure), the senior folks will run blow-out trips around the world.

The purpose is three-fold:

1/6
Ezra pointed this out, but why do “goodbye tours?”

1) say goodbye to counterparts
2) set themselves up for cushy post-admin jobs (dinners with executives, at which the ‘well, what will you do next’ question is met with winks and nods)
3) boondoggle tourism

2/6
These tours are part of the Washington “revolving door”.

I’ve talked about those, below:

But cabinet-secretary revolving doors are SLIGHTLY different.

Those often involve board seats, book deals, TV gigs, consulting agreements ($100k/mo!)

you may not like it but this is what peak psychological operations look like.

ANATOMY OF A "BUFFALO RUN"

Or: How to convince your political opposition of a believable-yet-false narrative, so you can eventually discredit them and kill their momentum.

1/
First things first. I have no idea if Ian Carroll is involved in it, or just doing what he does: making incredibly viral videos.

That said, let's talk about the op that is unfolding right now. It starts here:

first: Something about this @ feels "off" to me.

2/ Image
Next: the claims are (1) odd while (2) believable.

BELIEVABLE. Tim is a weird guy.

But that's not the point. What we're seeing here is a BUFFALO RUN. The point is to get a bunch of folks to believe it, regardless of truth.

At his rally in Las Vegas tonight, @realDonaldTrump is going to reveal details around one of his most exciting policy ideas:

FREEDOM CITIES

1/ Image
Why do we need new cities?

The average Americans spends between 20 and 50% of their post-tax income on rent or a mortgage.

And that percentage has been increasing.

It’s most people’s biggest expenditure!

ECON 101 REMINDER: we model the price of goods and services with curves representing the amount of stuff for sale (supply), and the desire folks have to buy that stuff (demand).

The intersection between the curves is the price.

Increase the supply, and price goes down.
